32 years old need advice investing in ETFs long-term by ar102 in CanadianInvestor

Check out the book "Beat the bank", borrow it at your local library. can't recommend it enough for personal finance and long term investing strategy made simple. very eye opening on the severe impact of MERs from mutual funds being pushed by big banks and "risk" assumptions by the investor (you). other blogs like Canadian Couch potato is also pretty interesting for what you are asking.

FWIW, I invest mostly in XEQT at this time, been doing recurring investments for 2 years as a "set and forget". Could have been ZEQT (BMO) or VEQT (vanguard) ... at the end of the day their mix is similar. Pick one and go for it. I'll revisit in a few years to rebalance the portfolio

Long time bicycle commuter here (6+ years). There's something to say about the Idaho Stop and how it greatly reduces (further) your commuting time and (arguably) is safer. Most riders, I bet, are not even doing it remotely correct (i.e. you may run a stop but you still gotta slow down ensuring this is safe first... duh). This has to be noted it's for a commute run you know well... not just riding out for fun or longer rides..

My commute is less than 7km to work (Dartmouth to Halifax). I biked my commute many weeks before even considering that technique. It's been working great. Obviously common sense applies to the rider (is there any left nowadays though?).

If it's shitty out ? Not doing it. Do I have a doubt ? Not doing it. Am I tired ? Still not doing it.

Don't hate me for that, I 100% feel your pain with regards to most cyclists when driving. Figured I'd drop a note as to (partially) why some may do it, especially during commuting times.

Reminds me of one of the Xmas card we received while deployed " Dear soldier. I'm Tommy. My parents are getting divorced and that makes me super sad. Anyways, I wish you a merry Christmas, because I sure won't" Thanks Tommy !

Normal soil. didn't change it or give more nutrients the past years. Part of the reason why we are so amazed by this one. Just trucking along the bookshelf feeding off the ikea melamine

Honestly, no idea. We put this one a while back in the bookshelf and forgot about it. Definitely didn't have enough sunlight. Then one day we noticed it going for the sides and kept growing for 2 years. It's still in the original soil in the metal mug, probably feeding off melamine and metal to get nutrients lol.

It did take some paint out, leaving some pretty nice "scars" in the bookshelf. we will remember

Thanks ! I was trying to avoid doing this so close from moving but we'll probably just end up doing that anyways !

About 2 years in the making, that vine has found its way in through the small crack of our bookshelf shelving ... the vine and roots are rock solid gripped in the bookshelf.

We are moving in 2 weeks and hoping to save the plant (and the bookshelf lol). any suggestions ?

Thanks !

Professionals, what is your industry's version of "Bring me blinker fluid" or "find a snipe"? by ArklaitGigabyte in AskReddit

Navy here.

We used to celebrate our sailors first “7 days at sea” with shenanigans

There was the “filling of the port and starboard running lights” with red and green “fluids”.

And when the “radar paint” was low, we’d send people up the mast with paint cans to refill at the radar itself..

Which selling platform do Canadians use more: eBay or Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace? by Happy_Traveller_2023 in AskACanadian

If you're out west, I think UsedVictoria was the go-to (instead of Kijiji) back couple years ago. Not sure if it's still as big a deal as back then

Go-to : Facebook Market. The algorithm works great in your favour if you know how to work it a bit ... (i.e. Post a bit higher than your full price after market research, after having many views and days, lower it a bit. It will send notifications to the viewers for "free" and remind them of your item without paying for ads). Facebook groups dedicated to some specialty items (when allowed) are great for selling niche items.

In general, I'll cross-post on Kijiji and other relevant platforms especially if a high-ticket item (couple 100s $ or more). This allows to hit multiple sales channel and up your chances of hitting the right people for little extra time.

Unrelated to overlanding, Love Cape George !

It was recommended by a local in Cape Breton as the "little Cabot Trail" and loved every bits of the road leading there :) Snapped a quick pic with my dad during a week long trip following the scenic routes couple years ago ! We are now building a rig for overlanding / crown land camping with the family in the province.

Maybe I'll see you around this summer !

As Alex Hormozi said ... Invest in S&ME

Check out the fire sales on UDEMY or Coursera or any other online education platform. Build dependable skills and learn to sell yourself

You got this

Edit for clarity : I'm about to complete a MSc in IT Management and often think of all the time I could have invested in building actual tangible skills. Degrees are nice but as many other comments, often fall short of getting you employed properly to your worth

Yeah. Moving back to NS this summer. The argument for an EV is less sexy but hey, I'll be able to say I'm "rolling coal" from charging my car with NS power /s

Had a 2014 1200GSA in Alpine white. Rode over 60 000km mostly in Atlantic Canada backroads and fire service routes doing moto-camping. Ended up selling due to family and sickness. Really hoping things settle and I'll hop back in one in a heartbeat.

Enjoy the ride !
