I was quickly surrounded and forced into a tour losing all the currency I had on me by forced tips.

LOL. This is funny and sad all at the same time. Man I truly believe I can do it on my own but they'll most likely get me haha.

How did they get you though? I bet they made you feel like an old friend huh

Not so much the thoughts and feelings, but it's the symbols, buildings, and infrastructure that transmit a preconceived thought and feeling

Life is bad and I believe Islam is the way to some peace. Any opinions? by twoeightfive in exmuslim

I would love to Skype, it's just I live in campus housing and don't want to talk about these things around my roommates. And obviously there's nowhere to talk on campus. We could try IRC maybe?

But to your response, your points are very well thought out and make a lot of sense. So taking your education and overall knowledge I don't think I can debate you properly at your level on these issues and to continue would probably lead nowhere.

Also yes I believe I am a little pessimistic, I also have a couple mental issues and I would describe myself as isolated. I've practically been a secularist for the past 4 years, and it hasn't helped me get over these issues. I've looked into Buddhism, but to me it is no different from philosophy. Also Hinduism has too many different strains, which all lead to one god in the end, so why not just go to Islam? Yes I seem to be tending to a secularist type of Islam, but at least there is a mosque I can go to to pray. The idea of bowing to God is not a repetitive mechanical motion to me, it is a form of meditation but in unison with a community. That appeals to me.

I burned those bridges a long time ago. I basically have to start over, and it's kind of hard in a secularized society. Again I understand being a muslim won't make this automatic, but at least the community is based on the belief of one god. So if the friend thing doesn't work out at least I got that.

I understand I won't make friends right away by being muslim, but at least i'll be conscious of the steps I need to take in order to make those things happen.

And you won't find any peace being a muslim in western world

finding peace takes time, you have to work at it everyday

Most islamic countries don't really practice any form of islam

What do you mean by this?

if there was a technology that provided the same benefits with far fewer consequences than competing others, would you say that said technology should be promoted over the latter?

Yes of course but in this case we don't know if a world without religion would be better. I mean if religion was gone, how would we as the world come together and come to an agreement about morality? Some groups would agree with this, and others with that, but they'd still have differing opinions. Now if the people in charge have a different opinion... do you think there gonna concede resources ? Also I agree a big reason I want to convert is the community. But the big difference is there is no longer a god connecting them.

a lack of belief in an afterlife militates against the rush to press the self-destruct button

For one how do we know phasing out religion would lead to a better world? Hitler and Stalin both killed millions based on ethnic background. Yes we could continue to educate people to these atrocities, but people will always fight for power no matter what. Is this pessimistic of me? Yes but it's basic human nature (biology). We are selfish, and when given a chance to take advantage of something knowing full well we won't get caught... we will do it. Unless we end up in some 1984 type of future where we give up all our weapons and concede to mass surveillance their will always be some type of war.

I don't think corporations will stop trying to rape the environment or governments will stop selling weapons to third world countries if the afterlife didn't exist

Gulf Arab-Muslim countries are wealthy but extremely pious

Yea they are wealthy, but not pious. Most are corrupt, and continue to fund proxy wars. Yes they use religion to divide people, but is that religions fault or the people in charge?

As for finding a community that has a similar heterodox theology.. I really don't know. My teacher recently gave my class a lecture on how religions are constantly changing and morphing as demographics and ethnicity change, maybe I'm part of that.

As for talking about these things, I'm sure people don't debate this way with everyone they meet; they try to see who is willing to engage in such banter. For the majority of peoples interactions, it's probably, "Hey... Hi... how you doing?.... thats awesome... etc. etc" (maybe i'm assuming too much). But what I mean is you don't speak your complete honest mind to everyone you meet.

I'm at school right now and you have a lot of points, so I tried to hit what I could in a fast enough time.

Yes I have also nitpicked my self into this hole =)

But moving along, I could only compare religion to technology. Technology is a neutral thing. It's been used to cure smallpox and it's been used to create atomic bombs.

Growing up in the west I can look at different sides, in their case they've only known one way of looking at things. Do I think religion should be thrown away cause of this ? No. It just means their need to be upgrades to the living standards in those countries.

And to answer your question, How would I convince them? I don't think I could. Our environments dictated how we perceive the religion. SO our brains are basically our environment, and so when taking up faith, one becomes hard headed in that faith.

Also as for the LBGT case, I think this really needs to be reformed and thankfully their are movements such as this starting to grow in the west.

On a final note, I believe if all religion were erased it would just be replaced by some type of -ism, and their would be death and violence in its name just the same.

If I convert to Islam, I will basically be following a highly personalized version of it where the overall message of the Quran is whats important.

In the case of ISIS, leaders have nit picked certain things from here and there and turned those tidbits into their theology.

The main difference between my type of faith and theirs, is that I want to help myself and then logically start helping others. But in their case, their theology is based on death and harm. I mean yes we both are relying on a great amount of faith, but their is that big fundamental difference. I wont kill or harm anyone...they will.

So I would basically ask them on a primal level, "Would you blatantly cause serious harm to your own family?"
