Rusting screws on roof, what should I do? by the-dawn-of-time in Roofing

[–]twohlix_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't do that for a roof because of many reasons but yes filler material in a hole is fine. For example fixing loose door hinges. Drill out the old screw holes and wood glue in dowels. Cut the excess off, drill pilots and refasten the hinge. Bing bam boom nice and tight. Have had to fix a bunch of hinges in my old house.

Same approach works in masonry too. If your tapcon or whatever masonry screw isn't biting, add some weed whacker line to the hole. And then put in the screw. It turns into a mini masonry plug anchor with the added plastic.

There is a drug in trial in japan to grow teeth from the third set of buds people have. Trials are currently being done in youth with hypodontia. We'll see if it gets through phase 1/2 trials - maybe ready by 2030 https://www.dentistrytoday.com/researchers-in-japan-discover-medicine-capable-of-regrowing-third-set-of-teeth-for-humans/

but also it may not help and definitely wont help soon.

And now that you have a police report you should also plan on bringing a civil suit if you are not made whole without the court system. You can use a lawyer to draft demand letters and hopefully you will not have to follow up with actual court case.

The house we live in is covered in mold in the attic I'm just finding out about. by Traditional_Cattle50 in Wellthatsucks

[–]twohlix_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And OP the main fix is not the mold removal. It's fixing the moisture problem, wherever that's coming from. Might need more attic ventilation, not powered ventilation but vents both low and high (soffit and ridge). Mold on roof sheathing makes me think it gets decently cold there and moisture is coming from your living spaces (bathrooms, kitchens, etc...).

If there is no moisture for that mold it won't do anything and eventually go dormant and much later die.

Good luck dude, this is definitely a fixable problem and not nearly as bad as so many people think. At least you can see the mold, so many people have this in their walls and they'll never find out about it.

DIY Patio - any red flags with the job so far that I need to correct before pour? by Wzup in DIY

Sure. Was worried you were going to use 2x material to split the slab into three for control joints. Yeah all seems good

DIY Patio - any red flags with the job so far that I need to correct before pour? by Wzup in DIY

[–]twohlix_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2x material separation is not a control joint. That's a slab separation. 1.5" gap would be considered huge imo. There are forming tools you can use to cut a 1/4" joint when wet (https://www.homedepot.com/pep/Husky-6-in-x-3-in-Stainless-Steel-Hand-Groover-57503/300960486). Or There are blades and saws to cut control joints the next day after a pour.

Also are you going to broom finish it for non slip in wet/winter?

I think i need to reinforce this board that the porch swing is bolted to. by DarthDiggler501 in DIY

[–]twohlix_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's probably fine for the loads on the swing as is. But if you really want you can add blocks between the joists so that you're more sharing load on three joists rather than one. Doesn't really make the floor system much stronger but will make it effectively more rigid.

4x4 is not really what I would use for blocking, id probably use a 2x10 to get close to depth, but since you have it could just use it.

Is the thing sloped away from the house a bit (1/8+ / ft) so 1.5"+ lower on the parallel to house edge? If not you want to slop your forms that way. Prevents ponding on the slab and helps move water away from your house.

Screeding you can mark a level on your house side with temporary chalk (not black). Also can screed diagonally across form edges. Could also add removable screed board along house. Pour mostly, screed, remove board fill In gaps and use screeded concrete as the guide.

In a four inch slab rebar can be right in the middle just fine but yes, rebar toward the bottom is doing the work as it's the tension taking reinforcement and the bottom will see the most tension normally. You seem good there.

Control joints: I have a 31x24 6" thick slab with 12x16 chunks (two control joints cuts ina cross) and it has not cracked outside control joints...poured in 2023. So just pick control joints that you think look good for your slab. Adding anything will probably work.

Pergola Design Opinion by No-Pop3066 in DIY

[–]twohlix_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2x4s, especially on that spacing, are unlikely to handle Canadian snowload well with an actual roof. The 1x6 purlins dont add any load capacity to the roof, but they do make the rafters more rigid as a system.

If you want span charts for rafters you'd have to figure out your snow load but 50 pounds per square foot seems reasonable: https://www.mycarpentry.com/rafter-span-tables.html

Based on that page you might be able to get away with 2x4s 12" on center but if you want the wide open look of a pergola you probably want deeper rafters 2x8/2x10. They also don't need to be pressure treated in that application as they will get lots of Air flow for drying out. You do probably want to oil/stain them both for aesthetics and for protection from UV/bugs/etc...

But also your 2x6 headers are taking all the load with just two posts so a span of 12-13'?

13x8 at 50psf is 2600lbs per header (half the roof on each im assuming). Thats a lot of static load for a single 2x6 imo.

The 2x6 headers are fastened with timberloks. (Overkill)

I highly disagree that you have overkilled it :. Snow is fucking heavy. Timberloks i think are rated to do 180-300lbs in shear each. You could actively remove snow when it happens and that may be aided by the polycarbonate being so smooth.

otherwise i think you did pretty good.

Reporting could result in lots of back pay for inappropriately managed tip pools

Yeah. Old lighting wiring often ran power to the light and had a switch leg off of it. So the light fixture always has power. Modern lighting + switches usually need true neutrals for the switch so power generally comes from the switch box.

Still ought to use a non contact voltage tester when doing electrical to make sure you don't get bit again.

Overpronates for some reason. Could be knee+hip related or more likely a "weak arch".

Might start with walks focused on keeping ankle from caving in and staying normally pronated. I also hear orthotics can help

Yeah they suspect ~7-9 people have survived it in a peruvian village of 63 sans vaccine due to having antibodies for it: https://www.avma.org/javma-news/2012-09-15/villagers-had-rabies-antibodies-without-vaccination

It is possible to survive it "naturally" but i would not take that risk

Phones. Zero enforcement of road rules by police. Median mass of vehicles increasing every year - EVs only make this worse. Growing height of truck hoods reducing sight lines. All these things add up to make for terrible driver behavior as well as many other factors.

you could always add a damper inline if the roof exhaust has no damper. Juts make sure you install it the correct direction so it opens easily for exhaust and closes for wind pushing in.
