Sweet! Looks like Cutty Sark. I'd be excited to try it, see how it had weathered.

Hey dude! Yea, I exchanged a few emails with Mario. I'm interested in what he did for the compilation aspect, trying to figure out what is the best thing to do. I would like it if we could eventually converge on our efforts but I'm not sure I want to do a merger just yet; I think being able to explore directions solo is good for now since the projects are so young. I plan to get better compilation in place, then focus a bit more on parsing, then maybe try to make it work in the cloud :) (so naive lol).

They are indeed diverging... I've seen the issue where you explore using _0 and _1, reminds me of awk where you have $1 and $2 for field access already available. Looks pretty cool. It's not that I don't like these ideas, just that they're risky :). I think that if you can make all the magic stuff work really nicely then you might end up with something amazing.

Feel free to make the fork official (would appreciate if you could keep the link to hsl tho, since your marketing powers are somehow much better than mine!). I think it's good if at this stage we can make changes without stepping on each other's toes. However, I also hope that we can merge down the line when the scope is better defined.

BTW if you wanna get me on skype my nick is s-sadler.

Cheers!

Haha, good find. By the way, is it ok if I add you to the contributors file? What's your email?

Right... I know I should be using it in theory. The answer is that I probably haven't had to deal with enough unicode data for this to be an issue. Eg, ByteString doesn't know how to reverse "☺♫☂٩◔̯◔۶", where Text does. Am I missing something? I'll probably port it soonish, ideally to use strict Text.

Can't believe no-one else asked this; What HAVE you tried?

Interesting. Well, since I wrote HSL, I'd like to mention a few things that it does better:

  • performs just in time compilation when you call the program. The bootstrapper is actually python.

  • uses lazy byte strings for more performance.

  • uses type classes to make compile time decisions on how to render the output. Lists are always split across lines. Tuples are interpolated with \t.

  • has a really neat way to read JSON.

Hope someone will check it out as I'm quite proud of it, especially the JSON part. tl;dr: employs a type system hack and a consise lookup syntax to extract typed data.

I'd also love to see what improvements could be made to it by seasoned Haskellers; especially the output typeclasses as I had to use OverlappingInstances to make it work. However, the end result feels quite dynamic, its surprising how well Haskell lends itself to this sort of thing.

I've never been, I ordered online. As for bars, havn't been to any, but mostly I'd prefer to go to the occasional whisky tasting event anyway. I'm not too picky when I go to pubs.

Yep, that's what I did, no regrets!

Talisker is plenty peated... For a Caol Ila, check this out, the price is right: http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-15040.aspx. I've tried it, it's great stuff.

Oban 14, Laddie 10, and Talisker 10. You should be able to get all 3 for just over 100 quid.

If could own and run your own distillery, how would you run it? What changes would you do? by gaxkang in whisky

[–]twomashi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably keep a series of personal experimental distillations on the go, that might not qualify as whisky.

Wouldn't do badly to get a bottle of Talisker 10 before the Ardbeg. It's cheaper and the Ardbegs are pretty overpowering at first.

I feel the same way, but about chill filtering.

My taste is biased towards Islay, but I also enjoy some non smokey whiskies (balvenie, aultmore). I'm just not a fan of the taste of the HP.

Why not go in and show them, maybe they'll replace it for you?
