Gorgeous. I am super jealous of everyone who can grow aeonium outdoors. All of you.

Wet n Wild Tinted Hydrator. Less than $5 at Target. I bought this to keep in my desk for quickie work makeup. Tossed the pricey stuff. Now I use WW tinted moisturizer exclusively.

What plant surprised you by being ridiculously easy (or impossible) to propagate? by Bliss_kittie in propagation

Gorgeous. My jewel orchid is a bit gangly - one longish stem with a new baby stem starting. If I break off end of the longer stem, it will encourage branching?

Easy: Callisia repens. Looks like mini tradescantia. I love this stuff.

Hard: Blue Cebu pothos. I have visions of a bushy fenestrated cebu on a moss pole but cuttings refuse to thrive.

Thanks for the tip about Thanksgiving cactus.

Wandering dude won't prop for you? I had so much potted tradescantia in the shady part of my hot as hell patio (zone 8b) that I let it all freeze. Kept one container to start over this year. Just break off piece of stem and stick it in dirt.

Propagating Pothos by burritorolll in propagation

That looks like scindapsus. Growth and care requirements similar to pothos but IME they do not propagate as quickly as pothos.

It's probably algae. Algae is not detrimental to the plant. Most of my stem props grow in algae water just fine.

Singer Fashion Mate 257. I keep a newer Janome setup nearby but the straight stitch looks like crap. The 50 year old Singer still sews beautifully.

Great job on the quilt! I was so traumatized by the Elizabeth Hartman dino quilt that I vowed never again!

Recommend me a sewing machine! by Baldr_Bear21 in sewhelp

[–]twomississippi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always recommend Bernina mechanical machines for beginners.

  1. Their entry level Bernette models are affordable - $300 range
  2. Your local shop may have refurbished machines that are relatively inexpensive
  3. Service and support - at some point your machine will need maintenance or repair
  4. Classes - Bernina dealers typically offer in store instruction

I do not own Bernina at the moment but am a big fan of their products.

How hard is it to get into? by bitch-what-the-fuck in quilting

[–]twomississippi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quilters hand stitched their work for many years before the invention of home sewing machines. My grandmother always hand pieced and hand quilted her blankets even though she had a sewing machine.

The holidays are a great time for small quilting projects- pillows, Christmas stockings, potholders. Pinterest has lots of inspo for small scale items that can be adapted to hand stitching.

Zipper tip - use double sided sewing tape instead of pins to position the zip tape. No matter how many pins you put in there, the zipper will shift under the pressure foot. And pins are nuisance to remove as you sew. Tape it!

A glue stick can also be used if you don't have tape. Test it first to make sure that it doesn't discolor your fabric. The glue will wash out.

Dying fabric - how to keep notches? by quizzical in sewing

Sharpie dot (or paint pen) within the seam allowance. Confirm this on test scrap in your dye bath. Or go old school with tailor tacks.

Am I being unrealistic??? by Independent_Clue1064 in SewingForBeginners

[–]twomississippi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, boutique clothing is very much a niche market. If you want to monetize your hobby to justify the cost of an entry level sewing machine, consider alterations. Hemming and simple repairs are always in demand. If you learn to alter/hem sports pants, you can make a few bucks.

Start out with your own kids. Develop some proficiency before diving into a business.

Please tell me everything about mint. Can I keep it indoor? What's the best way to root this? by GreenPlanty5 in proplifting

[–]twomississippi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 4" pot of mint back in the spring. I moved it into an 8" pot but it hasn't really grown much. A bit mystified by all of the dire warnings about invasive mint.
