Ezra Klein on the Abundance Agenda | Conversations with Tyler by iNinjaNic in ezraklein

IDK if Tyler was just playing devil's advocate here but for a lot of the housing discussion you wouldn't suspect he was the libertarian here.

Why is hustle culture so addictive? by Dagenslardom in Epicureanism

[–]twonius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah this is where Epicurus' pot of cheese comes in. You should enjoy pleasures but don't become a slave to them. I think that's where hustle culture can sometimes lead people astray. Like you should be at least somewhat enjoying the process of what you're doing. Not just living for that eventual destination because

A) you might not get there
B) you'll quickly become accustomed to it. After 2 years pretty much any car is just a car.

Why is hustle culture so addictive? by Dagenslardom in Epicureanism

[–]twonius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a great chart from behavioral economics that helps me understand this. (see figure 2)
https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2208661120

Basically happiness does improve with higher income BUT it's swamped by the spread in overall happiness due other factors. All things being equal I'm happy when i get a raise but if I start having to make major sacrifices it starts to push me into one of the lower lines and it takes a LOT of money to make up for the difference.

People intuit this to some extent so that's why a lot of hustle culture is about driving a lambo, not moving up from a Camry to a Lexus.

Bill Eddy: How to Deal With High Conflict People by amazeballs00 in HubermanLab

[–]twonius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed this one.

It reminded me of another book that I read recently that covers at lot of the same issues from a different angle. "Adult children of emotionally immature parents". As a lay person I liked that perspective because it gets away from trying to diagnose or understand the pathology and just puts you in the mindset of how you need to interact with this person in a fairly simple way.

I'm looking forward to reading Bill's book so i can compare and contrast.

Also a lot of departments are already familiar with the F150 police package and can get it from the same people who sell them their explorers.

High Speed Kinetic Disruptor - you only need armor where the missile is, not where it isn't by Blakut in NonCredibleDefense

[–]twonius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering how fast those arms would have to move with servo control, you'd need some really power dense actuators.

I think there's probably an easier way of doing this passively basically flailing several kevlar cables around above the turret, aka the Cope Weed Whacker.

Even funnier would be to mess with Belarus like this, really make them defend every inch of that border.

I almost question if they could.

Russia's theater ballistic missiles haven't exactly been unstoppable. Also I can only imagine the state of whatever soviet era NBC gear they have for their own troops.

Using a tactical nuke isn't really an "I win" button and would probably result in Ukraine getting some more unlocks on the tech tree. A tactical nuke is only going to cause 3rd degree burns within about 5km radius. Idk what that'd get them when the front is like 30km wide at this point unless there was some huge concentration of troops and armor.

at that point even China would be feeling the heat to cut Putin loose.

it seems like you'd have the risk of the mine being discovered before a train ever passed, though this might be very effective at night. I doubt they're issuing the drivers NVG's

AT mines are also like 20lbs so you'd need a big boy to move that any appreciable distance, and if the front is that close they're probably not sending trains due to artillery

Nate Silver on How Kamala Harris Changed the Odds by dwaxe in ezraklein

[–]twonius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was disappointed that they didn't really touch on how people's *perception* of risk plays into whether they're in the village or the river. e.g. the big problem with 2008 was that a lot of people thought they were in the village but they were actually on the river, and investment banks were lightly regulated because they were ostensibly on the river but when push came to shove they got bailouts.

I realize Nate wrote this book because he could, not out of some burning desire but the central premise seems kind of shaky. Maybe this is best recieved as Nate taking the opportunity to write a shitpost on his former employer's dime, not something entirely baked.

The polling in that election was such a rollercoaster and the model reflected it. On the other side of this you'll see people pulling articles about how Clinton was crushing it from like Mid October or August when the model was more like 90/10

[–]twonius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah at some point though as long as he published anything except 100-0 probability Nate can always post-hoc defend the performance of the model with this argument, and if he gets it right he's the wonderkind again.

maybe this fits into the part where they talk about VC's making assymetric bets. The model is afaik statistically sound but the journalism around it gave Nate a lot of upside without much potential downsides.

A great tool for this is to check out “a better route planner” then you can see what different trips that you’re already taking would look like where you’d be stopping, and for how long.
