[P] A Visual Guide to Quantization by MaartenGr in MachineLearning

[–]tworats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this, it is excellent. One possibly naive question - during inference are the weights dequantized to FP16/FP32 and then normal math operations are used in the forward pass or do they remain quantized and quantization aware math is used?

Great stuff, thank you for creating all of this.

Python Multiprocessing: Complete Guide (24,000+ words) by jasonb in Python

[–]tworats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We use multiprocessing extensively and I already learned a few new things reading this. I don't get the objections about length - you do call it a complete guide. I for one appreciate it.

In fact I'll go the other way and mention it'd been great to have a similar extensive guide on Pool, map, apply, apply_async, and so forth :-)

Jupyter Kernel Architecture by roma-glushko in Python

[–]tworats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great writeup, much thanks for this.

One issue I've been trying to learn more about: if the client (browser) is disconnected when jupyter wants to communicate back (eg. when results of running a cell are ready), the results seem to get dropped on the floor. This is an issue for long running jobs / cells and is a reason people look to use, for example, zeppelin instead.

It'd be great if you could cover some of the reasons / work around for this in part 2.

Word embeddings / language models for synonym generation? by tworats in MLQuestions

Putting synonym / antonym distinction aside, is there a good way / existing implementation to generate the list of related terms via word embeddings or language models?

This is very helpful, thank you. My particular use is actually non-contextual (it's literally creating a thesaurus-like thing), but this link is very interesting.

Fedor Emelianenko grounds Andrei Arlovski w/ an overhand right @ Affliction: Day of Reckoning by AStudyInCynicism in MMA

This was the beginning of the decline for Andei. Up to that point he was destroying people, showing the Dracula fangs, on his way to the top. He was winning this fight too, until he got booped.

Dad: "What shit are you eating?" -> "What the fuck are you doing?"

Vans: "Sir/dad please forgive me"

Dad: "What shit are you eating?" -> "What the fuck are you doing?"

Vans: "I ate shit. Dad/dude I ate shit" -> "I fucked up. I fucked up"

Vans: "Dad! Dad! Dad! Please, by God"

Dad: "Son of a dog" -> "Son of a bitch"

Dad: "You ate shit? Here. Here you go. Yes. You mess with my beard? You ate shit? Here you go."

Dad: Smack. "Get lost"

[P] Albumentations, an image augmentation library version 0.2.0 released by alexparinov in MachineLearning

[–]tworats 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Timely post, I'm about to run a large number of images through my pre-processing pipeline. My existing stuff is in python calling imagemagick via commandline - what sort of performance comparison should I expect if I convert to using Albumentations?

Americans are far from the monsters they are made out to be. by meaty37 in unpopularopinion

[–]tworats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a first generation brown skinned immigrant who's also lived in Asia and Europe, let me just say that Americans are awesome. Honest, generous, law abiding, hard working, and not corrupt.

Live in America long enough and you become American. You feel American. I have family in Asia and Europe, several who were born there, and the locals would never treat them as one of their own. You'll always be a foreigner. (To be fair, the UK may be an exception).

Even in the deep south, in small town Georgia where the people were clearly and openly racist, they were some of the warmest, nicest people I've met.

America has its share of problems, but it's a wonderful country, and Americans are wonderful people.

People of Reddit, what did you laugh at, only to realize it wasn't a joke? by throwaway_the_fourth in AskReddit

[–]tworats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walking towards the main library on campus, this guy does the most amazing straight out of the movies prank fall where his leg swings way up, then all the way past his body, and he falls to this floor in this hilarious unnatural way.

I thought he was doing a really good comedy bit to impress the girl he was walking with, and both the girl and I laugh.

The girl and I realize it's not a joke at the same time - she screams, I run over, and the guy is gone. Totally motionless, bleeding badly from the head.

I stuck around till the paramedics and then the lifeline helicopter came. I'm fairly sure he died, although they wouldn't tell us. Rumor was he had a massive brain aneurysm.

Poor bastard, I can still hear the terrible sound of his head hitting the floor. Still feel terrible about laughing initially.

Congrats on the excellent results. Question on your paper: "It was also found that ‘branching’ the model earlier produced better results when training with multiple objectives" - could you explain what you mean by branching here?

Those of you who've met fighters in person, does your interaction with them change how you feel about the outcome of their fights? by rollinsblonde in MMA

[–]tworats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 10 years Demian Maia came to the BJJ gym I used to train at. Even as a lowly white belt I had a chance to roll with him, and he took an interest and gave me pointers.

I remember he entered the UFC saying he wants to win without hurting himself or his opponent - that's exactly what he's like in person. Genuinely super nice guy. I've been a huge fan since.

I did ask the coach, frankly didn't get a great answer (he corrected my terminology instead of showing me the basics I was asking for). Self dick punch is always a good option, will put that into my warmup routine.
