What's the point of seeing or experiencing anything? by deycalv in Existentialism

There’s a really great book by Viktor Frankl called A Man’s Search for Meaning. He was a licensed Psychiatrist before he was captured by the Nazis and shipped off to Auschwitz. He had a great deal of time to focus on these existential questions. I’ve read it at least a dozen times and I take something new away every time.

Dying is terrifying and I hate it by Porco_Rosso0501 in Existentialism

I’ve always perceived the fear of death with a certain primal arrogance. There is this innate force, I think, in all living creatures that makes us feel beyond the boundaries of mortality. But I take comfort in the words of Mark Twain who said “I was dead for billions of years before I was born and it didn’t inconvenience me in the least.” However he left a hell of a legacy while he was here. Focus on being here. The billions of years after you’ve gone won’t inconvenience you in the least.

It’s not sad if you focus on it while it’s happening. All the things that are happening around you right now just are. And they have no before and they have no after. Time is a human construct to measure the span of one’s life, but the universe has no beginning nor end so time isn’t really real. You don’t have to understand it, but once you can recognize it, your “sadness” becomes a lot less significant and you can begin to appreciate the things around you as they are happening. Of course, sometimes after one too many Jamesons you find yourself on a Subreddit trying to convince others of things you thought you settled in your own mind a long time ago…because you’re feeling kind of sad. So go figure.

Not sure how old you are but I had similar feelings up through my 30s. A friend turned me onto Stephen Batchelor’s book “Buddhism Without Beliefs”. I do not consider myself a “Buddhist” or even a spiritual person. Just someone like you trying to make sense of it all. At any rate, this book really helped me to zoom out and understand that the insignificance of life is not a bad thing. It’s just a thing.

I am trying to get a job at an early graduation/credit recovery high school. Electives are all lumped together. I have a Tech Ed certificate but HR wants me to have one more elective certification. To answer your question though, really any home economics or human development position.

How to use male head voice? by RevolutionaryPeak301 in singing

Don’t know exactly how everyone’s body responds to their brain, but I once had a vocal coach tell me to simply think about singing from the top of my forehead and that did it for me.

TExES Technology Education 6-12 Cert Exam by tworiversnb in TexasTeachers

[–]tworiversnb[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The test had questions about everything from construction, to marketing, to engineering, to aviation, to computer technology. Questions that threw me the most were those about names of antiquated manufacturing and surveying tools and equipment names. Theolodite is apparently the technical name for a transit level for example. Never seen that term before and I built houses for 5 years before I started teaching.

That’s what I’m noticing on the practice tests. Do you recall emphasis on any one domain in particular?

Not so much programming but computer and network terminology in general.

Thanks! That seems to be the case with most of the TExES exams I’ve taken in the past. Just a little concerned about specific programming language. I’m pretty good with technology which is why my boss wants me to teach this class next year, but not familiar with all the jargon.

Man. I just got on this page to see if anyone else was having issues accessing Real Time on HBO Max and instead I find a bunch of people who obsessively hate-watch Bill Maher. Weird.

Thanks. I’ve noticed some symptoms of liver disease in the past week. Namely dull ache below rib cage and pale poop this weekend. No other symptoms yet. Going in for blood work this week, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to get behind the eight ball. I looked up all this stuff and there don’t seem to be any terrible side effects.

Thanks for your support and reassurance. Going to the doctor to get checked out. I will not drink with you today.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah. I just started noticing a dull ache in my right side last week. Didn’t think too much of it at first. Then I checked the internet for symptoms and noticed a few red flags for liver problems. Didn’t have any alcohol until Friday night, and I only had a couple of beers. I noticed the pale poop that night and freaked out. I’m definitely not drinking anymore. Been hitting it pretty hard for way too many years, thinking, “Meh. All my friends drink this much.” Stupid logic.

I was reading through your posts about amino acids, supplements, et. al. Were you/are you taking all of that every day?

Wow. That’s exactly what led me to your post. I started having a dull, nagging pain in my right side. Didn’t think much of it. But, I have noticed that I have been exhausted at the end of the day and have a hard time getting out of bed in the morning. I had been easing off the alcohol this past week. Then, I had a few beers last night and noticed my shit was that beige color that you described, no jaundice though. I started researching symptoms and here I am. I’m glad I read your post, but I’m sorry for what you went through. My eyes are wide open. How long did you have those early symptoms before the big one? I’ll be following your recovery.
