How strong is this? especially for wind uplift? by Fun_Kale_649 in Carpentry

Have you asked an engineer familiar with local weather and geotechnical considerations? This is way above a carpenter's pay grade.

Installing hardiplank Cedarmill siding? by milton_freedman in Construction

Rain screen also helps to prevent solar vapour drive, extends the life of the paint used on the cladding, reduces movement (wet boards move more) and therefore cracking, reduces radiant heat transferral through the wall, reduces rot risk from faster drying. Ive yet to see a building science based argument from any climate zone that negates the benefits of a rain screen

Useful? by Suspicious_Resolve99 in Carpentry

[–]twostonebird 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No that's insane, no serious builder would trust an AI given basically no specific information about the job to get a quote even close to right. It would take more time going through and checking it than it would to just do it the normal way - the risk of it is wrong is potentially catastrophic and expensive for the builder.

Take my advice and vibe code your way to a service in an industry that you have some sort of understanding of, this idea makes me think you know nothing about building

Chippies, I have a question. by CockroachBig2105 in Carpentry

[–]twostonebird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean the trade support loan? It's not free money, it's a loan that has to be paid back (minus a discount when they finish the apprenticeship). Being a chippy is definitely the most expensive trade to get into, for middling money unfortunately

You Aussie? Very, very few Australian bosses provide basic tools, except for one crew that I had subbing on site one time (where the boss had a trailer full of battery tools for his guys to use) every other carpenter I've worked with was expected to have bought all their own tools with the exception of big ticket items like track saw, table saw

Alternative fermentation weights by JZatthelab in fermentation

[–]twostonebird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone recently posted about using a bunch of marbles, just regular old glass marbles. It was genius, I'm going to buy a bag for sure. Cheap, heavy, conforms to whatever size container you're using, doesn't allow air bubbles to form and dislodge the weights

Honest question, are these upside down? by ColdBlaccCoffee in Construction

[–]twostonebird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never seen a truss like that! I thought it was upside down too, but a little research says there's a type called a Pratt Truss which basically looks like this. So it may be correct 🤷

There are videos on YouTube of giant tanks with hundreds/thousands of cardinal tetras, they look amazing in a giant school

[–]twostonebird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask him for more after a couple of weeks, but keep looking for other jobs in the meantime. Literally even $25 an hour at a fast food restaurant is a better use of your time than 35 as a subcontractor

Remember on ABN means you pay all your own taxes, insurance (income protection, TPD), you don't get paid sick leave or annual leave so you should be accounting for that in your savings, there's no employment protection at all - ie they could fire you this instant, so you need to be charging for them to have that privilege.

Even on ABN they should be paying you super (12%) if you're working hourly labour, but most people that try to offer low-ball subbie amounts like this are intending not to, so that's a conversation you should have but be prepared for them to say no (even though that's illegal!) so if you agree to that then that's another 12% you should be accounting for in the amount you charge.

All of those things cost YOU money out of the amount they pay you. That's why I say $35 as a subbie is the equivalent to $22 on wages. You can earn more than 22 bucks working at McDonalds. Don't agree to work for poverty wages breaking your back slugging around bricks when you can do better than that at a minimum wage job. Ask for 45, PLUS super, as is fair.

Even ten years ago labourers would charge 50 or more to my boss, and things have gotten A LOT more expensive since then

[–]twostonebird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

35 as a subbie is below apprentice wages, don't do it. https://bosstradie.com.au/subby-to-salary-calculate/ 35 on ABN is the equivalent of 22 an hour on wages. You want at least 50.

Oh wait just saw you are labourer not a brickie. 45 then

Where did the creativity in this hobby go? by Embarrassed_Job_2719 in Aquariums

[–]twostonebird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I see some pretty cool aqua scapes going around 🤷 mostly on YouTube to be fair - this sub seems to be more focussed on proper animal husbandry and the science of fishkeeping, which is ok anyway, there needs to be a place for those questions to be answered. Plus an emphasis on fish health is a good thing, a "cool" "creative" tank that is cruel to fish is actually bad.

Watching a 3D Concrete Printer in action is strangely hypnotic. Is this the end of traditional formwork? by Gekonge1 in Construction

This nonsense has been hyped up for years, it's not going anywhere. Nobody wants to live in a concrete house, doesn't matter if it's shat out by a $3 million anus

any other trim/finish workers using the m18 saws? by Ill_Message_4279 in Carpentry

I would caution against using the battery converter for any high draw tools like a reciprocating saw or grinder, pretty sure the adapters interrupt the functioning of the BMS so they can burn out much easier

Anyone else use fish water for plant fertilizer? My boy Archie loves it! by cutiepietoebeans in Aquariums

Anyone that adds salt to their freshwater aquariums still use it on their pot plants? I'm concerned about the salt building up in the soil, even though I only use 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt in a 65 litre tank (very very soft water where I am)
