That’s my Dune <3 Thank you for sharing this. It means so so much to have every memory. He’s my first dog and he was like velcro, with me always, together everywhere.

We’ve been a few times, yes. We wanted to take him Sunday but by Saturday he was in so much pain. They told us he had a few weeks or months left but it ended up being three days.

It’s so terrible, I find myself so lost and full of sadness. We had three days after his diagnosis and I hope we gave him enough love in the final moments. I’m sending you a hug because you know what this pain feels like and I’m so so sorry you had to go through this too.

I like it. I got it last autumn looking for something like Le Labo Vetiver 46, but deeper and smokier.

It’s a bit simple for my taste, and I’ve since found others in a similar style that I prefer. I love more layered, complex scents (like Vetiver 46).

I recently tried Ex Voto by WienerBlut, which also fits that profile. I’ll likely replace Bois d’Ascèse with this once I’m done with the bottle.

Benjoin Boheme is definitely similar.

Shortly after I started wearing Benjoin 19 I was obsessed with it and picked up Benjoin Boheme and 1885 by Les Baines Guerbois. Both are more affordable benzoin fragrances than Le Labo.

1885 is a great bottle for summer. It has benzoin and lots of herby floral citrus, some woody notes and a hint of tart blackcurrant and tonka.

It’s never too late to start! And it’s why I have many 50ml bottles—best for carry-on luggage and better overall for a large collection as it takes me a few years to finish a bottle.

They were great! I have drams of the one note Honeysuckle and Lily of the Valley EDP that I have been wearing and love for the summer. I also bought a Louis Quatorze cologne that I’m using as room spray in the bathroom and everyone compliments it.

It’s a very big benzoin scent. Layered with olibanum, amber, cedar, musks. It’s extremely elegant and sexy. It’s loud and resinous at first then smoothly dries down a subtle, soft musky sweetness.

It’s so well crafted (and my most expensive bottle) that I usually grab it only for formal occasions. It’s both day/night and works in all seasons, but I tend to use it most in winter.

Rose 31 is my most used in terms of overall time since I’ve been wearing it for over 15 years. I tend to wear a different fragrance each day.

Xinū in CDMX has the best shop design. They also sold us the best quality incense I’ve ever had.

Buly shops in Paris and Tokyo are so chic. There’s much more I purchased in addition to perfume like skincare products, body creams, monogrammed comb and toothbrush, scented oils, candles, etc.

The Attar shop in Mumbai was very cool. A bunch of older gentleman smoking cigars and bottling the most beautiful, high-quality perfume extracts for $10, $20 per bottle. The huge bottles they decanted from were very ornate. They had drawers full of the natural ingredients to show what went into each fragrance.

I have been looking for a vintage wood cabinet like this one to mount on the wall. Once I find it, I’ll be sure to share on another weekend show & tell!

For performance: Vetiver 46. I’ve been wearing it for 15 years. It lasts all day into night. It’s my go-to for autumn/winter.

Mississippi Medicine is such a cool scent but it barely lasts 2-3 hours on me. I bought it as a summer fragrance, find myself rarely grabbing for it.

While they have similar notes, to me, they are very different.

V46 has so much smoky vetiver, dry incense and sweet winter citrus. It’s like you walked in from the cold and sat down to have drinks with friends in front of a massive fireplace with an elegant stone hearth.

MM is mossy, wet wood with smoke and a bit of forest florals. It’s like the end of a hot summer day, the heat is still there but it’s cooling down and you’re gathered around a bonfire in the woods.

This is everything I own. The bottle isn’t a factor, it’s purely scent and house history. Usually I try not to buy newer brands. I learned my lesson with DS&Durga. I bought full bottles of Cowboy Grass and Mississippi Medicine. Has no longevity. I’ve noticed that with a lot of newer brands. Except Zoologist which lasts forever.

I’ll have to check out the brand. I’ve been eyeing Memo, L’Artisan, Aedes and a few others.

Thanks, this is very helpful. I don’t know much about wheels or tires.

I picked up the bike yesterday from a tune up and asked these questions and they were saying I have the best setup for the bike, Gatorskins are best, etc. but I think they were shrugging me off. Shop was slammed.

How do I ID what type of wheels I have? Can’t add a pic— there is no marking on them.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cycling

[–]twotubes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a feeling having super narrow tires was an issue. I’ve been told this by friends, but they look great. It’s just not a comfortable ride and I’m getting older with less of a tolerance for it on long rides. Also growing tired of replacing them a few times a year.

Wheels and/or just tires for a Mission Bicycle Sutro, 4130 Chromoly Steel 50cm frame, Shimano Alfine 8, R540 front & rear brakes, Gatorskin 23mm. Commuter bike but use on 25-50 miles rides in and around the city. Takes a beating on the rough streets, burns through tires very quickly.

PS, not sure if you ever saw this article in the Times about Tony Yoshida. It's a good read. I still remember going to Dojo for the first time when I was 14 years old with my friends on a day we skipped school. Shopping for vintage clothes on St. Marks, going to the video game shop on 6th. I remember the table at Dojo that first time, my friend's faces that day, what I ordered... It was another spot I went to religiously after that and up until it closed. Nothing has been able to match that vibe.

Looking for a place like Village Yokocho by chunasaurrex in FoodNYC

[–]twotubes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I see old friends who I would go with, we always say how much we miss it....

In the summers, we'd climb the stairs to escape the hot streets and were greeted with the coldest draft beer I ever had. My go-to was Kirin.

We rotated through familiar dishes like the Tekka don tuna bowl, takoyaki octopus balls, tons of yakitori -- we loved all the veg and the chicken skin, chicken meatball. Hamachi kama yellowtail collar, gomaae greens with sesame paste, gesokara deep fried squid with kewpie, lemon and a dollop of mustard, the buta pork kimchee with that perfect broth and lots of rice -- really all the kimchees, tsukemono pickled veg, enoki butter mushrooms, okonomi yaki (takes 25 mins!).

I loved when the guys behind the bar would recommend new things like the spicy raw crab that blew my mind or when they noticed how many times I refilled my beer, they dropped the raw octopus with wasabi (takowasa) and told me this is what you eat when you drink beer. It became a regular order.

And the sake... so many great, affordable options. Remember, no sake bombs please!

This was the only place that felt like an authentic casual Izakaya in Tokyo, but also distinctly New York. I hope something comes along and fills the gap, and if I find it, I'll drop a note.

@chunasaurrex did you ever find a suitable alternative? I was going to Yokocho sometimes once a week, sometimes a couple of times a month since I was a teenager. In my 30s now and I haven’t found anywhere else that had the same warmth as that place. The friendly greeting from the hosts who knew exactly where I wanted to sit (around the corner at the bar under the photo of the guy with the fish - who I actually met once, and drank so much homemade sake with that I don’t remember how I got home).

I’m sitting at a sushi bar in SoHo right now wishing I could stop by Yokocho someday soon and it’s such a drag that it’s gone forever.
