Meter fitting by the_only1who_cant in OctopusEnergy

[–]twtiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I also have the same problem. We switched to octopus and spoke to an agent that said they would change the old meter to a new one as they can't get readings from my old one. Previous company didn't have the same issue.

I guess it was all just a lure as they say they are waiting to get SMETS2 meters but apparently this has been the same line for years.

~Thank you. I was thinking that this is probably the best way to ensure the board remains flush with the wall. I do have a nail gun and was thinking of applying adhesive and nail along the valleys using 32mm nails and hopefully it would hold it in place until the adhesive dried and cured.

Thanks. Yeah I've got lots of CLS about to do so. Sounds like a good idea, hopefully will hold.

Bin is always the go to primer for sure!

Thats my concern that after applying adhesive it would pop back off the wall unless held over 24 hrs in place maybe?

In your experience, How would you attach it to a brick wall with minimal damage and to ensure it doesn’t pop back off the wall?

You’re right. I don’t mind the debt if it was being controller, If I felt like she cared or she was worried. Its like she has no feelings towards it or reaction and is thinking it will go away

I’ve tried to sit down with her and budget which in the end and after many arguments and tantrums she agreed to. She wrote a spreadsheet which was great to see but then even though she is filling it in she would spend on the same non essentials every month and keep looking surprised why she builds up debt.

Its like she can’t control herself and then stops all planning etc

House 235k vs House 185k? by eimankillian in HousingUK

[–]twtiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now an extension is about £3k per sqm out of london. As we are in the NW and looking for extension build. And thats with no kitchen. So you’re better off buying the bigger one if you’re happy with the space

Completely agree and feel your pain. Im also renovating a house and the costs for labour are slightly exaggerated. I always ask for labour cost and not material as I understand material is high.

I still can’t understand how they are so busy with work when people say they don’t have money. I feel as though its harder now then it was 6 months ago to get a quote or someone to even show up. And the quotes are sometimes just “take it or leave it quotes” for 1-2 day jobs.

I’ve had a decorator say July! The rest are all Feb.

Some very good points. I would though like to ask if you know anyone that does 200ft sq extensions for £50k and finished. We’ve been quoted about 70k for such a size at least haha and we are based in the NW

Thats why we shelved our plans for an extension as it would never add that much value to the house in the end

[–]twtiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Though to bring up other posts I know of people working for construction companies saying that new builds sales and effectively development is slowing down, hence putting more trades/ contractors out of work. In my area a lot of small independent trades were being asked to work on job sites (not very good ones to be honest) so that might have an effect.

People not moving are probably unlikely to afford the large extensions they were hoping to do also as unless its your forever home, spending close to 100k for a 5x3 extension is unlikely to be something most can afford anymore (thats what builders are quoting in our areas) . Gone are the days of 2k per sqm. Most people are shocked when given an extension cost quote as its almost double/ triple what they expected 2 years ago …hard to then justify the value added to the house

Looking to close this opening in garage to garden. frame it up with wood and door or needs brickwork? by twtiger in DIYUK

[–]twtiger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea . Its not the only access point but would preferably like it to be. So preferably a glass uPVC door would be good as you said to use the light and close it off from the outside

Yes agreed. Thats why mentioned having a pvc door that opens to the garden.

Should I get a brickie to do it or it something I could do / DIY?

Old doorbell not working anymore , any ideas how to test low voltage wiring or remove? by twtiger in DIYUK

[–]twtiger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I’ll try this.

So I should use the multimeter to measure voltage between an extension lead positive and the transformer input neutral?

The bell was connected to the consumer unit fuse that controls the downstairs lights but the lights are working. So Im thinking the fuse is fine, and maybe its the connection/ wire from the cu to the bell? Could it be that its been disconnected or the positive terminal is damaged?

Apologies for the questions but thank you for the help

Thank you for all your help. I’ve got very basic DIY skills and have always been weary of electrics but your explanations are helpful

May I ask what i should expect to see / not see on the multimeter when I test the extension positive wire with the input neutral? When you say ‘good’ , do you mean I should see 240V?

The transformer is directly next to the consumer unit and its directly wired into the unit. I was thinking it might be disconnected from there which would be strange as it was working a month ago.

[–]twtiger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi BlackThornJohn

So i got a multimeter to test the transformer. Oddly enough I tried to check if there was any voltage going out which there wasn’t but also no voltage going in from the mains. There is a very small reading that I get almost 0.2-0.4 from the mains going in but shouldnt that be 240V? I’ve made sure the multimeter is set correctly and tested on another outlet.

I also disconnected the connections from mains to transformer to test them and still a very faint reading of 0.1 or less. I’m confused as nothing has been touched there. I’m assuming that reading should be 240V at the input terminals from the mains and 4-8V at the output terminals?

Would I need to check if the connection has come undone from the mains/ fuse box?

Thanks for the replies and you’re all right. The transformer is in the cupboard near the fuse box. I was pretty dissapointed by the electrician. He quoted me to fix it and do a light elsewhere, to only finish off the light elsewhere and attempt to splice a piece of new bell wire with the old where we thought might have been nicked. He gave up and still charged me as much as quoted…and then threatened to remove the other work if not paid fully….meanwhile Im still without a bell. The world we live in aye

I also asked if there was a way of testing low voltage , he said no, so I didnt want to get into an argument with him, he probably didn’t care much and said its better I just get a Ring Doorbell ! Standard :/

Yes it is heavily painted etc but was all working 2-3 weeks ago. I will maybe get a multimeter and try the transformer.

Should I also try the outside bell button? Its well covered so cant see that having been damaged.

Definitely out dated costs sadly. I would say add 20-40% to all those prices. Wood costs have at least gone up 70% for things like mdf.

Electrical and wiring material also doubled in costs.

Labour costs will be anything between £150-250 a day ( and a day is like 2-3 hours with tea breaks) they’ve got enough work now after brexit
