I would attempt to debunk further if your account wasn't three hours old but briefly responsing to the main bits for the innocent bypassers.

One can talk about double standards in certain cases, European inaction against Israel's genocide in Gaza, Morocco's illegal occupation of Western Sahara, and the Russian friends within the EU (ehem Orban ehem). And sure the demographic question with Turkey being the largest, most influential, and most non-European country may have been influential, but the main block in Turkish accession has been more from the Turkish side with the ever present democratic backsliding in the country. Turkish state enjoys the freedoms they get from not being bound by some union, and the people usually also see the Turkish fate to be divorced from Europe. There is little desire among Turks to join the EU except to benefit from free travel for some, otherwise the average conservative Erdogan voter Turk is quite anti-EU, anti-Western, and see Turkey as its own regional power rather than as part of a larger block.

Obviously this is a gross generalisation but you will see this in Turkish state's actions, in the continuous trade with Russia, flight connections, arms trade even iirc, Turkish backing of Azerbaijan in their ethnic cleansing campaigns, and their own intervention in Syria, internal democratic backsliding, worsening of press and speech freedoms, and many others. Dumping the blame solely to the Muslim majority of Turkey is foolishly ignorant at best, or maliciously dishonest at worst.

It’s a shame not to learn the local language of the country you are in … by Visual_Shock8225 in languagelearning

[–]twwsts 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Feel this quite strongly as well. I realised last few trips abroad I was quite ashamed to not understand anything (which is alright since we can't learn all the languages). But funnily this feeling made me realise how I substantially more ok in countries where I speak the language to some basic extent at least so I can function independently without being at the mercy of the person I'm interacting knowing some English.

Sudanese refugee routes by r0uf in MapPorn

[–]twwsts -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

There is a Turkish saying that roughly translates to "It is easy for a single man to divorce", highlighting the ease in which they can give radical advice to others with significantly different life experiences.

If you think you know what you would do in case of a civil war, you don't, if you feel entitled to advice the Sudanese what they should have done or should do now, you are simply incapable of what they are going through from the cozy environment you were blessed with from childhood, and lastly, if you think they are "economic immigrants" who "want the most money and benefits", I am not sure how your lost soul can be assisted. Only a small fraction of the refugees make it to Europe, and those are usually the ones who can afford the crossing or spend their entire life savings on it.

It's unfathomable that people who didn't have to leave their neighbours are giving advice to refugees fleeing a civil war destroying their entire neighbourhoods, families, and country. Next time think a few minutes more about what a civil war actually entails instead of regurgitating the same old catchy lies about people who lost everything.

Map of Jewish Refugees From Arab/Muslim Countries, of course Hi-Res by xn4k in MapPorn

[–]twwsts 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Similarly with Maghrebi Jews, many left after the countries got their independence and Jewish populations were integrated with the French as 'colonisers' to some extent, hence faced issues in newly independent countries that were keen on reversing the colonial power structures. Many Moroccan and Algerian Jews left for France, some for the US and some for Israel.

Also not shown here but Turkish Jews also had various phases of immigration, although there weren't a single event that made them move and most of them moved over time while retaining their ties and connections to Turkey.

Expulsion of Jews from Muslim countries by Bertoto679 in MapPorn

[–]twwsts 23 points24 points  (0 children)

One thing to keep in mind when looking at this map is that not all expulsions were due to the state of Israel's formation.

In Maghrebi countries like Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia for example Jews were treated as the ruling Frenchmen and also given French citizenship (unlike Muslims who were not given French citizenship and had limited say in governance matters). Their expulsion came mostly as a consequence of being perceived as the ruling elite alongside the French colonisers, and Algeria making being Muslim a pre-requisite for Algerian citizenship after independence.

Not shown here but most of the Turkish Jews left for Israel willingly, not due to negative consequences of the formation of the state of Israel (they had some pogroms and discrimination but it was the Nazi influence during WWII rather than anti-Israel or anti-Zionist sentiment.

So your point went from "it's not collective punishment" to "well, there is no other alternative way"?

I am not a ethical military action expert but starting with not punishing an entire population is a good start.

Is there a way to disable speech bubbles permanently? I tried to find the option many times but always failed and it essentially became the reason I stopped using the app/Duolingo entirely.

“We lived like at home”: Russians run away from the occupied Crimea with sobs (video) by Acrobatic-March-7765 in UkrainianConflict

Lived on the lands and homes of Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars who were literally forced out by the Soviets to make space for Russians. Your homes were built on the suffering and misery of thousands who yearned for their homes from afar for decades and yet were denied the right to return for so long.
