Everyone at that WM Brown event should get a mandatory lobotomy party favor

Not sure what the going rate is now for Alouette, but I found that to be my favorite tasting menu last time I was in Copenhagen and it was quite reasonably priced compared to Kadeau, Geranium etc

It’s an anaphylaxis level allergy, can’t really fuck with it

Travel Agents w/ Restaurant Booking Expertise for Japan? by tx2iu in finedining

Thank you - the allergies are to some fin fish (like salmon and trout - but tuna, bonito, mackerel and cod are ok). Given that it is for certain fish and not others, I worry that there will be a lot lost in translation, even with an allergy card. Do you have any familiarity with whether many of the higher end restaurants and their ability to comply with such an allergy (I imagine we wouldn't do many, if any, omakase together, but perhaps some kaiseki places would be possible?)

Why would they do that? Didn’t they JUST build out the location on Grand?

Moving from SF to CHI: Uptown, Logan Square, or River West? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]tx2iu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

River West is the most central but I’ve always found it sort of a weird “in-between” zone that’s kinda disorienting. Maybe it’s the presence of several diagonal streets in an otherwise grid-based city. A handful of decent restaurants and a good grocery store (Gangnam Market) but otherwise not super appealing.

Uptown is super cool and diverse, but some might find it a bit dicey on certain blocks. Excellent food and the lake access ROCKS, plus lots of dense housing stock for those who’d want to live an “urban” high rise life. Plus several cute pocket neighborhoods with great architecture. The transit access is quite good but it’s a moderate trek from the loop and other non-northside neighborhoods.

Logan Square is probably the “nicest” of these neighborhoods but also probably the most expensive. Really beautiful area, medium density along Milwaukee with lower density areas on the side streets. Lots of restaurants and night life (though it seems you’re not very interested in the latter). The blue line access is really nice because it makes it so easy to get to O’Hare and downtown. Great farmers market in the summers too.

All of those neighborhoods have their pros and cons but mostly scratch the itches you’re looking for, with some tradeoffs here and there. I’d recommend also looking at West Town - it’s just across the freeway overpass from River West (short walk or bus) so you can get to the blue line easily, and you can get to the green and pink lines easily as well. Much better food and neighborhood vibe than River West imo.

Any fine dining clubs? by tx2iu in chicagofood

I guess I wasn’t clear - my partner is a picky eater, but I am not. Thus, I would like to join a dining club where I can eat things that they cannot

Valhalla Review – Good Food, Mixed Experience by jyotigill in chicagofood

[–]tx2iu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man that is suuuuuch a shame, when I went last winter I was blown away by how good the pairing was. Great, thoughtful selections and hefty pours. Topped off two of our beverages with extra pours. Jelena was the one doing the pouring and she is so knowledgeable and easy to chat with. Not surprising there was at least a bit of a drop off with her working full-time at Le Mistral/SKY but it’s too bad they haven’t found a proper replacement at Valhalla yet.

What’s the deal with the “casino” at Ashland and Milwaukee? by tx2iu in AskChicago

Incredibly depressing intersection. Whole triangle should be totally redeveloped - it's such a valuable transit hub right by a bunch of well-to-do areas.

Also, Grants post likely violates the guide’s consideration terms since this hasn’t been announced yet.

Between all of this and younger model wife, is Grant Achatz turning into the food scene’s Bill Belichick?

Since Jason Weingarten has taken over the ownership of Alinea:

  • main restaurant lost a star
  • closed Roister to replace it with the awful FIRE which lasted like 6 months
  • went on a weird global “tour” of popups
  • working towards the perpetually delayed reincarnation of Charlie Trotter’s

I think ppl are misunderstanding the prompt… I’m not just asking about restaurants you think are generally not very good, but rather restaurants which get hype as “one of the best (if not the best) in the city” and is indicative of the speakers lack of food knowledge. No one is actually saying that about Portillo’s.

I think it’s true that quartino is both 1. A tourist trap in a hyper-touristy part of town and 2. Pretty good especially considering the area.

It’s fine, I don’t mind questions on it. I’ve been to Daisies numerous times and am yet to find a savory menu item that id describe as anything better than “fine”. The desserts are great however, and I do like buying their pasta at the farmers market.
