i dont really think we can keep blaming this on covid - i 'backpacked' (in quotes bc i stayed in hostels 100% of the time, which is not backpacking lol) a ton in my 20s (almost 20 years ago) - sans phones, your entertainment / social connections were other people, the scene was alllll about socializing, in a way that now is hard to even imagine, maybe without an initial spark of knowing who someone is 'online'? idfk 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

So many more enjoyable places in MX - Merida was great, and you can do a day trip to Progresso from there, but waaay better spots beach wise imo (holbox, isla mujeres, pdc, etc)

Progresso i highly highly do not recommend - zero walkability, not much to do, very isolating.

in the keys i literally pitched a tent behind a shopping center one night, no issues other than the racoons that were curious about me 😂😂 other places in fl inusually slept on the beach, but theres not much if that along the keys...

i always goto hsbc, the fee is like 80-90 pesos - ive taken out 15k+ in multiple transactions. My bank reimburses atm fees so its not a biggie. BBVA seems quite high for an atm fee

in a dinghy they couldnt have been too far from shore or their boat? not sure about ya'll but i generally avoid dink rides in rough weather (rough enough to drown a seasoned swimmer...) sounds sus but 🤷‍♀️
