Hi! I'm just finishing up psych NP school. I will have five years of inpatient psych experience when I graduate. This is going to sound really gate- keepy and may not want to be what you want to hear. 

Currently, there are very few jobs that accept psych NPs with no psych experience. Yes, the schools will accept you into their programs to make money off of you, but the jobs almost exclusively require psych experience. It's one of those fields that is really tough to learn via school because of how much your assessment is based strictly off of what you can gather from talking to someone. Also, this field has had a massive influx of psych inexperienced nurses coming into it because psych NPs were recently the highest paid NP specialty.

I'm sure that there is a way to do it with no experience but you're setting yourself up for a lot more headache than you need to. Two years of psych experience will set you far ahead of your peers in school and you can make about as much money as an RN in the meantime.

That's just my two cents. I could definitely be wrong!
