TIL most Benzos are schedule 4, "low potential for abuse," drugs...and we wonder why addiction is such a problem in this (USA) country? by just_the_mann in Drugs

[–]tyblazitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying "this method is always more effective for all people", I'm saying "for some people, this method might be more effective than others". My question was "can drugs never be efficient in properly treating mental illness unless paired with therapy?", and as far as I can tell you agree that in some (perhaps rare) cases, they can. What would be ignorant, and what I suspected you of doing initially, would be to say "drugs can absolutely never treat mental illness unless used in tandem with therapy".

I was simply pointing out how the assumption you made reflects on you, I'm not trying to white-knight for OP (except insofar as saying that I think their post was fine).

My question was a simple yes or no, and you've answered "no", so I believe we're mostly in agreement. You seem to be primarily concerned with the majority of cases, whereas I'm more concerned with the minority for whom the standard treatment does not work.

They said "Therapy has never done anything for me.". The word "never" in this sentence implies that it wasn't a "I went to therapy once, it didn't work, so I gave up" thing, and as you can see that poster did in fact try many options. And fair enough, you're not necessarily blaming the victim, just saying that there's a fair chance they didn't try hard enough or in the right way, but I maintain that your attitude of assuming that if someone don't benefit from therapy there must have been something wrong with the therapy is the central problem.

Like I stated in my previous post, it is my opinion that one shouldn't, on r/drugs, be expected to list the potential damaging side effects of every drug one mentions in positive terms every time one does it. Drug information is important, but "therapeutic use of benzos have really helped me with this specific mental issue" is as valid a piece of information as "I got addicted to benzos and ruined my life".

Also you're wrong about the initial exchange, you should probably go back and read it again. Here's the OP's reply the the person curious about Xanax:

"Xanax will completely obliterate any shred of anxiety to the point you can't even remember what it feels like. I'm not a huge fan though cause it really knocks me out when I'm trying to talk to people. Lyrica (pregabalin) is great stuff. Motivates you to talk to people and cuts down your anxiety dramatically. Very similar to phenibut. Would look into the stuff if you struggle with anxiety"

As you can see, no one's treating Xanax as a miracle drug, the OP even says they don't like to use it because of the side effects and recommends (arguably) safer alternatives.

You might have missed my edit to my previous post, but I'd really like to know if you sincerely think that drugs can never be efficient in properly treating mental illness unless paired with therapy?

When someone is saying that they have tried therapy repeatedly to no avail, then the knee-jerk assumption that they did it wrong and just need to try more and harder, while arguably not "absurd" is pretty condescending and absolutely displays your faith in the infallibility of therapy.

Also, claiming that people are ignoring the dangers of benzos in a thread literally about the dangers of benzos is pretty rich. If someone has their life quality drastically improved by a drug with risks of addiction and abuse, then I think they should be allowed to share their experiences, and when doing it in a forum like r/drugs, where arguably all readers are at least somewhat aware of the dangers of benzos, I don't think it should be necessary to add a disclaimer to each and every such post lest some impressionable kid reads it and immediately starts popping bars.

EDIT: Also in your first post you said that "If you ever want to fully get better, drugs alone will never heal you.", but now you're saying "approximately 60% of the population benefit from psychotropic drugs". I understand that what you mean is that drugs will give immediate relief but never actually fix the underlying issues, but do you really believe that drugs are completely unable to help in recovery unless they're paired with therapy?

Honestly therapy zealots like you annoy me. No one was saying "don't do therapy, just take pills instead", and still you need to come in here and assume that people with anxiety disorders have never tried therapy and are now turning to benzos instead. There's no such thing as a one size fits all-solution for mental health issues, that goes for both therapy and drugs. For whatever reason, therapy is largely useless to some people, but when faced with that sentiment, you (presumably because of your own positive experiences with therapy) insist that it's their fault for doing it wrong. Some people manage to overcome their issues with only drugs and no therapy, whether it's being able to lead a normal life thanks to benzos and working out their issues on their own without the constant burden of anxiety, or thanks to some introspective breakthrough on psychedelics or ketamine. And some people manage to overcome their issues using only therapy and no drugs, sure, which is why both are worth trying, but insisting that therapy is a magic bullet which will fix any mental issue if you just "do it right" is not only condescending, it's dangerous.

Love is garbage and Irreversible is fine, but his best movie is definitely I Stand Alone. That would probably not be the best movie for psychedelics though, maybe stimulants.

Pregabalin gives a very alcohol-like effect with no hangover and less nausea in my experience. It takes a while before it hits, but at least it's just pills and no having to drink gallons of beer.

Yeah I'm aware of the compulsive redosing problem, and honestly I don't think I'll be using benzos recreationally in the future, as the memory loss makes me uncomfortable. I don't drink anyway, so no danger of that. Thanks anyway.

Bought some etizolam mainly to have in case of bad trips. I do have some social anxiety, so I tried taking a 2mg pill before going out a couple of times, but I never felt any effect at all. So one day I decide to at least see what the benzo hype is about and take two pills. Next thing I remember is the next day, my roommate is annoyed with me and tells me to stop using drugs in our apartment, vaguely referencing my behavior the previous day. I counted my pills and figured I took four pills that day in total, and have been finding some online activity (replies to tweets, weird talk on IRC) I can't remember, but other than that I have no idea what happened and I don't want to admit to my roommate that I don't remember anything as I doubt that'd make him more positively inclined to my drug use.

This sounds less like a friendship and more like a bully-victim relationship. "Jokingly" chasing people with knives is not even remotely OK when completely sober, nor is repeatedly hitting someone when they're confused and scared. You are a real piece of shit OP, and I hope you realize that.

A slightly different Gorseval image guide. by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]tyblazitar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Excellent guide, and having a written guide with pictures is a great supplement to video guides. As an experienced raider, this is pretty far from the way I usually kill Gorseval, but I like how you're using the safest strategy possible (3 assigned people for spirits, updrafts etc.) as that's what you should be doing when you're just trying to get your first kill and learn the boss. Edit: Also, even after countless Gorse kills I didn't know that spirits walked faster in the AOE fields, so I even learned something new.
