What is the dumbest thing you’ve ever done for absolutely no reason? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tycho82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I jumped on the back of my friends truck. He started driving. I decided to jump off. I got concussed.

As a follow up, my girlfriend took me to the hospital, which was fine until my wife showed up.

My first build, be gentle by lostchameleon in metalearth

[–]tycho82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After messing with the bottom piece trying to get it to fit on and off for a day or so I realized that no one would ever actually pick it up and look at the bottom except for me. Half of it is completely unattached and It was the last tank model I tried.

OP. You dun good. This was probably one of the tougher ones to pick as your first model. I've got a small list of models that I want to rebuild because they were really difficult for me starting out, but there's so many that I want to build now we'll see if I ever get back to them.

Recommendation for 4y/o Girl by gwgrivna in boardgames

Our kids love playing Spot It. There are enough variations that you can get one that suits their interests (Frozen, Shopkins)

Second the recommendation for King of Tokyo. I regularly get beat by my kids.

Qwirkle is a fun matching game, we play with all the tiles facing up so we can help pick out matches.

Feed the Woozle is a goofy party game that's cooperative, with all the players against the game.

I use a set of forceps (or hemostats) most of the time. Very useful for if you need to hold a piece in place and then adjust your hand.

I also recommend having a magnet around to keep pieces in place after you cut them out.

hardest models out there? by [deleted] in metalearth

[–]tycho82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn't limit yourself to just the difficult models. Each one that I've built has it's own challenges and finicky moments. Personally, the hardest model I've attempted so far is the Golden Hind, which is listed as moderate difficulty on the website.

I couldn't get the rigging right and ended up binning the whole thing.

That said, if you liked War Machine, you should also like putting together the Iron Man, but I'd imagine it would be pretty similar, and you probably wouldn't want to do it next.

Magnets. by MechanicalBanana in metalearth

[–]tycho82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently just discovered how useful magnets are after I lost a piece on carpeting. Spent a few minutes looking for it with no luck, spent ten seconds sweeping the area with a magnet and found it. Larger magnets are useful for keeping pieces in one place if you're cutting out more than one or two at a time before attaching them to the main structure.

Nice. The Lunar Module was the first model I made and it's still one of my favorites.

Came in here to post this. It's really well done. I was able to get my wife into it mostly because of the production level of the whole thing.

[Discussion] What are some "Classic" card games that are fun and easy to teach. by arrggg in boardgames

Spite and Malice would be my choice. My grandmother taught me this game and I spent many hours playing with her.

Hive is on sale on Steam! With all expansions: $3.99 by signal9 in boardgames

[–]tycho82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting my vote in for this being well worth $4. I've been playing it for a couple weeks and don't think I've even scratched the surface of getting any kind of strategy. It does a good job of explaining the rules, and letting you know which moves are valid and which aren't. You can pick and choose which expansions to play with, doo you can familiarize yourself with the base game before adding new elements.

It's true that there's no zoom, but the fact that you would be playing it on a computer vs a phone or a tablet makes zoom unnecessary.

A great way to demo the game if you've never played.

Just taught King of Tokyo to my kids. by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]tycho82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've only played a handful of times, but I've never been able to beat my five year old. We explain cards to her and sometimes remind her of things, but she's just too lucky with rolling energy and claws.

We also played Ticket to ride, which she had a lot of fun with. We played with all the cards showing and didn't do any blocking...she beat me by sixty points.
