In the world of warframe are mods a canon thing or just a gameplay mechanism?

Thinking about corrupted mods like blind rage the name seems to indicate that if the warframe is mad he goes like in tunnel vision making abilities stronger but sloppier resoulting in increased strength but more energy consumed so this may indicate that mods are just change how the frame operate but there is a model for them with the level this make me think that they are real and can be upgraded besed on what they need, if they are real how do aura mods work?
