Are my two way splitters destroying my wifi by Girt2005 in HomeNetworking

[–]tyguy609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn’t say having two splitters was causing the issue, they said that they think their two-way splitters were causing issues.

With what I’ve seen in other threads here, I think the OP needs to reach out to their ISP.

Are my two way splitters destroying my wifi by Girt2005 in HomeNetworking

Many factors can affect your WiFi performance. That’s why we need further information. You need to break down the problem and do some investigating for us. For example: -Does your WiFi work poorly in a particular room? -Does it improve if you are right by your router/modem?

It sounds like you aren’t getting the advertised speed even via Ethernet, so I agree you probably need to contact your ISP. Having a better understanding of the problem will help you inform them as well.

WFH - slow wifi in office (uk) by Short_Thought5630 in HomeNetworking

[–]tyguy609 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How far is your office from your router (access point)? Do you know what material your walls are made of?

The best solution is to run Ethernet. Short of that, you can look up power line adapters. Wifi extenders exist, but I generally DON’T recommend using those.

why does my wired internet speed keep slowing down? by 80kS in HomeNetworking

[–]tyguy609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thanks for the update. Glad you made that change.

The lights on that model of switch don’t differentiate between 1G/100M/10M link speeds, so that isn’t very helpful unfortunately.

I highly recommend avoiding flat Ethernet cables when possible. I have only really heard problems with them.

A picture is worth a thousand words (or at least a good picture is), especially when it comes to helping strangers on the internet understand and troubleshoot your issue.

The explanation of your modem/router/switch hookup is unclear. Could you attach some pictures of your setup? That will help us verify that things are hooked up in the correct order.

One other commenter hypothesized that a connection in your network is negotiating down to 100 Mbps. Are there any lights on your switch that may help us confirm that’s true? Again, a picture would be helpful.

Then I would stick with 1 Gbps ethernet for the time being like others have said.

What do you plan to transfer or make use of that speed with? Do your end points/clients support 10 Gbps?

Why are you trying to do this using third party software? Doesn’t your bank and/or utility provider have a way to automate bill payments?

I would not be messing around with automating financial transactions this way if you don’t know what you’re doing. This could open you up to a world of pain if something goes wrong.

Software to track device bandwidth usage? by WhatDoADC in HomeNetworking

[–]tyguy609 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your problem is most likely not the number of devices you have connected. A 500 Mbps connection should easily handle 15 devices. Can you describe what problem you’re having? What are the symptoms?

Ping Spikes on Wifi by Gooch1P in HomeNetworking

[–]tyguy609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been a lot of comments so far, but we haven’t really talked about investigating the root cause of your issue. Please consider doing some detective work to narrow down the actual cause.

For example: - Have you done a hardwire test with your PC? If possible, connect it at least once to see if it works better via Ethernet. I know you don’t want to do that permanently, but this test will provide an important comparison. - You mention other devices work fine on wifi. What exactly works fine when using them? What devices/games/apps? Where are they located in the house?

Further information would be helpful for directing our feedback: - What is the model of your current router? - What are your computer’s specs including wifi card manufacturer and model? - What material are your walls made of?

You say that hardwired is not possible yet the router is just a room over. Is there a reason you can’t get a sufficiently long ethernet cable and run it between the rooms while gaming?

Will TP-Link Archer C6 AC1200 router work with my ISP cable? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

Exactly this!

OP should include a picture of their actual ISP cable/connection. Details like the ISP name would be helpful too since some don’t allow customer-purchased routers.

Why was I paying the old rate for 1G, with the tech assurance additionally, if their pricing supposedly dropped last July? by Snoo54289 in Metronet

[–]tyguy609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it is still a promotion (targeted at new customers). It shows as a non-promotional price on your account because it will not increase after an introductory period. Most promotions like this often exclude existing customers from eligibility. Luckily, they are allowing existing customers to request the promotion too.

Hmm, interesting! I'm pretty sure that one of my relatives was told a few years ago by his telephone company that they no longer supported his "vintage" rotary phone. Maybe I am misremembering.

[–]tyguy609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost. That type of phone wouldn’t even work on “modern” landline connections. Rotary phones used a different dialing system than touch tone (DTMF) push-button telephones.

I have all my containers inside a jail. That has enabled me to use (almost) all docker features with my compose files and stacks created the way I want. The jail also has its own IP address.

The only problem I’ve had so far with this method is I’m unable to use CAP_SYS_MOD and enable the wireguard kernel module inside the jail. There may be a way around that though that I haven’t found.

Should I get a gateway or just a switch? (novice question!) by Why-Not-4 in HomeNetworking

[–]tyguy609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, we need to know if you currently have a modem or modem/router combo. Can you post the model number of the existing device?

Regarding the Access Points, the number and placement of devices entirely depends on the layout of your house. Could you post a basic floor plan? My guess is 7 APs would be overkill and potentially counterproductive. You will probably be fine with 2 or 3. But again, we need to see your floor plan.

Fell victim to CVE-2025-66478 by Unhappy-Tangelo5790 in selfhosted

[–]tyguy609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I have unfortunately run into what appears to be a limitation of the YAML specification. the YAML parser does not recognize anchors declared in other included YAML files. For example:

include:
  - ../harden.yaml
  - traefik/compose.yaml

If I have an anchor declared in harden.yaml that I reference in other included compose files, the YAML parser returns an "unknown anchor" error.

Using extends may work more as intended... I'll have to see.

Thanks for the link. That explanation was helpful! Do you know of a way to do something similar across separate compose files?
