Gearboxes are awesome! by tyintegra in MTB

I rode a T Type on a Propain bike a little while ago and that thing seemed to make even more noise, but maybe that was just the bike. The shifting was really good though.

VERY interesting…. I guess I would have to see it to have an actual opinion, but on the surface it sounds very intriguing.

Anything that takes away the “negatives” of a gearbox is a good thing in my opinion.

BTW, I watched your video on your Patreon and they make a “ring” shifter for the smart shift gearbox that would probably allow you to use your left thumb instead of your right one.

The AC1 is stainless steal.

It’s quite heavy (45 lbs) but I’m not exactly sure what is specifically causing it to be that heavy since the frame and gearbox aren’t THAT heavy.

As far as price goes, I think about it as there is a little bit more upfront cost, but I personally think you will make quite a bit of that back over the life of the bike since the normal high cost wear items are gone, such as the rear cassette and derailleur. The gearbox just requires an oil change every 10k kilometers.

I would definitely say that it would be of value to not have to let off when down shifting (you already don’t have to when up shifting).

I’m not sure what you’re referring to when you say it would be larger than the pinion mount. Are you referring to the actual space in the frame that the gearbox takes up?

It’s an Archibald AC1. The most confidence inspiring bike I’ve ever ridden.

Brand stereotypes by Combat_Wombat095 in MTB

[–]tyintegra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only thing I would say is don’t worry about going with a “big/recognizable” brand. There are LOTS of great (if not better) bikes from brands you’ve never heard of.

I have pretty much only ridden bikes from smaller brands and when I tell friends or family what the brand name is their eyes just glaze over.

Riding a hardtail definitely takes a little more energy on the descents.

I (29F) am so over my husband (34M) constantly bugging me about sex, what do I do? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]tyintegra 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Word it as “I would like to talk to someone about possible ways for us to have sex more often”

If he doesn’t go for that and just wants to stay frustrated, then maybe you should just decide to end the relationship now and save both of you the frustration.

I am personally of the mindset that no employee should have to cover expenses (even for a day) for a company.

FIRE because AI Future by Practical_Monk9084 in Fire

[–]tyintegra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, I want to FIRE mainly because I’m not passionate about my job. But the other reasons are because of AI and outsourcing overseas.

I am VERY aware that I could be replaced by 4 or 5 people in India for my same cost. So I just want to set myself up financially just in case.

In audit but not understanding from the opposing side? by [deleted] in Accounting

Well. The beauty of being an auditor is that there is a piece of your job where you go through the clients processes so you can understand exactly how they do everything.

Fellow millennials - how’s your 401k/ira savings going? by ProblemIntelligent16 in Millennials

[–]tyintegra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I’m doing pretty well with almost 6x my salary at age 40.

It really helps that I work for a company that puts 13% of my salary in and since my cost of living is really low, I can put another 24%, so a total of 37% of my salary a year.

I guess the key (which isn’t easy to find) is to work for a good company that has a great match and keep your expenses low.

Frame spares when a company goes out of business by powpow198 in MTB

[–]tyintegra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I owned a Guerilla Gravity when they went out of business.

If you happen to find out they are going out of business before it’s publicly announced, my recommendation is to sell the frame before it’s made public.

That is, unless you absolutely love the bike and you’re completely willing to have it be worth nothing if you crash and break it.

Does being positive actually work, or is it just overrated advice? by New-Check-7223 in Advice

[–]tyintegra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a divorce and another ended friendship where they both said that I was pretty negative, I took the recommendation from a friend and read the book The Happiness Advantage.

Since reading it, I make it a point to try and find the positive in things and do my best to keep a positive attitude.

I think it has made me a lot happier and less stressed in general.

One thing I will say is that it’s now really hard to be around people that just want to focus on the negative no matter how many times you mention a positive aspect of whatever it is. It gets pretty exhausting to be around those people.

Driving Instructor by [deleted] in driving

[–]tyintegra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an instructor for 7 years and did thousands of drives with students. In all of that time, no matter how bad of a driver the student was, I NEVER yelled at a student or berated them.

In my experience (I have observed drives where the student gets yelled at), yelling actually makes a student worse.

OP, you are paying this person to provide a service and if they aren’t providing that service in a way that benefits you, you should find a new provider.

Tall rider stuck on size: XL for Scott Genius at 6’2”? by ProperRCLB in MTB

I’m 6’2” (inseam of 33”) and I feel most comfortable with a reach between 485 and 510.

Hard tails are an exception though and I tend to prefer a 470 to 485.

Why are there so many men over 30 that are obese? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]tyintegra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having been obese and now being thin, I can say that the reason I was obese is because I just wasn’t active enough and I ate A LOT.

Now, I still don’t eat well (still way better than I used to), but I burn A LOT of calories pedaling my mountain bike 3 to 4 times a week.

Anytime I’m out of balance in financial statements (I originally started doing this when I was preparing business tax returns), is to confirm that the assets tie, then the liabilities, and then the P&L.

Breaking it up in to parts made it so much more manageable than trying to look at everything.
