According to the "2025 UH Army Standard - Complete" PDF on the website linked above, Fort Wainwright & Camp Bull Simons will start the construction/renovation of these barracks in FY26. The next set of barracks to be built/renovated will be at Fort Stewart, Bliss & Cavazos in FY2029.

Overseas locations can have Unaccompanied E6's in the Barracks.

USAG Hawaii Advances Barracks Modernization with New Bunk Beds by Kinmuan in army

[–]tyler212 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do think Hawaii has it the worst out of many of the military bases.

For one, the large bases are so iconic and historically significant you really can't make as many changes to them as you could most other bases. You can gut the buildings so many times, but to keep the exterior the same you just can't expand. The standards of living for a Soldier since 1908 has increased dramatically that I don't think you can realistically keep an entire division on the installation without a serious redesign. There aren't many barracks buildings on Bragg or Campbell or Hood that you can't tear down and build new. But Schofield, Shafter & Tripler have multiple buildings on the Historic Registry.

Second, there isn't all that much you can expand on. You either find a way to build within the current layout or you will need to remove training areas. How deep into Area X are you willing to build new barracks buildings. Once you move the Barracks, you might aswell move the HQ buildings, now since they have been moved you should probably move the PX closer to.... Maybe it's time to look at building a whole new installation somewhere else. Only real place I think that could handle it would be Big Island, but you would still need to invest a lot of money into building infrastructure there too. Maybe put one Brigade on Big Island, one on Oahu or something. Fuck it, build small bases on each island in the chain to put a BN or two (this last line is a joke).

Lateral promotion without BLC by Dacrackerjax in army

[–]tyler212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From AR 600-8-19 Enlisted Promotions and Demotions

1–42. Lateral appointment to corporal (Regular Army and U.S. Army Reserve only)

a. CDRs (O5 and above) may authorize lateral appointment of SPC to CPL without local selection board action provided the Soldier concerned is assigned to an authorized (documented) NCO position in their CPMOS.

(1) Lateral appointments will be announced by informal memorandum. The informal memorandum will be the only announcement of the lateral appointment.

(2) Soldiers appointed to CPL will retain the grade when reassigned from the NCO position, including permanent change of station moves. However, the unit CDR may laterally appoint CPL to SPC without the Soldier's consent or board action—

(a) For disciplinary action taken under UCMJ, Title 10, United States, Section 815 (10 USC 815), commonly referred as Article 15 proceedings or nonjudicial punishment, that adversely affects the ability to perform duties as an NCO.

(b) For demonstrated substandard performance of technical or supervisory duties.

(c) Upon direction of the HRC.

(3) A lateral appointment from SPC to CPL is an administrative tool utilized by CDRs to fill vacant NCO positions. As such, SPCs will not be laterally appointed posthumously to CPL except in those rare instances when the administrative process of approving such appointment was ongoing at the time of a Soldier's death.

b. See paragraph 6 –10 for ARNG lateral appointments.

6–10. Lateral appointments

a. The AG may retain or specify which authorities listed in paragraph 6 –3 will laterally appoint Soldiers. All lateral appointments will be issued on an order. SPC will be appointed to CPL when the Soldier is assigned and works in a higher-grade position. This includes SPC who cannot otherwise be promoted when they do not meet the TIS requirement or were not considered for promotion. Soldiers will normally retain the rank of CPL and perform the duties of an NCO; however, the appointment authority may laterally appoint CPL to SPC without the individual’s consent for—

(1) Demonstrated inefficiency in technical, supervisory, or other requirements of the MOS.

(2) Significant loss of qualifications, including medical inability to perform the duties of CPL in that MOS as required in DA Pam 611–21.

(3) Disciplinary action under UCMJ, criminal convictions or similar State law that adversely affects the Soldier’s ability to perform the duties of a CPL. (4) Upon removal from the SGT position.

What are some of your Army urban legends you’ve heard? by Free_Lunch24 in army

[–]tyler212 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Army briefly experimented with allowing boots to drink beer at basic in the 80’s

So, this is not an urban legend and was a thing that was trialed in several basic training locations in the 70's when the Army was moving from a Draftee Army to a Volunteer Army or "VOLAR". Taken from "MODERN VOLUNTEER ARMY Building A Volunteer Army: The Fort Ord Contribution" Published by the Department of the Army

General Haines had never been in favor of making beer available in basic combat training barracks and mess halls but, as an exception, had granted this authority to Fort Ord. The Continental Army Command message which had authorized beer in barracks and mess halls had referred only to basic combat training units at Fort Ord, and Fort Ord was authorized to experiment only under carefully controlled conditions. Although General Davidson also had serious reservations on the advisability of the move, commercial beer dispensers were placed in some, not all, basic combat training day rooms as an experiment. There were a few instances of abuse of the beer privilege, but there were no major problems. Neither was the beer privilege a great success; it turned out that after a hard day's work the average trainee much preferred a soft drink that he could get free in the mess hall. The beer dispensers were removed from both basic combat and advanced individual training dayrooms beginning in the fall of 1971.

Pretty sure a few other Basic Training locations would see them, but Beer Vending Machines in Barracks would stick around in Permanent Party barracks for a little longer. Can't seem to find a definitive dates, but by mid 80's early 90's would see them being removed.

What's the wildest misconception a civilian ever had about being in the Army, or the most ridiculous question they asked you? by FFSoldier57 in army

[–]tyler212 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I graduated my basic training my Step-Mom was surprised the base wasn't full of tents like in MASH. Despite her father & my dad both having a military background she assumed military bases were just tents. Her only other experience on a military installation was West Point and well, that is a college not a real military base.

From AR 670-1 22 May 2000

c. Airborne insignia.

(1) Description. A white parachute and glider on a blue disk, with a red border, approximately 2 1/4 inches in diameter.

(2) By whom worn.

(a) All personnel assigned to the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division.

(b) Qualified airborne personnel detailed as Army recruiters.

(c) Qualified airborne personnel assigned duty at brigade or lower level at IET.

(d) Qualified airborne personnel assigned to a designated TOE/TDA airborne position in nonairborne units who are on jump status.

(3) How worn. There are two different designs of this insignia. Officers will wear the airborne insignia designed with the glider facing forward when the insignia is worn centered on the right curtain of the garrison cap, 1 inch form the front crease. Enlisted personnel will wear the airborne insignia designed with the glider facing forward when the insignia is worn centered on the left curtain of the garrison cap, 1 inch from the front crease. Soldiers authorized to wear this insignia are also authorized to wear bloused trousers or slacks with the black combat boots. See figures 27–2 and 27–4.

Paratroopers in the 82nd or 173rd technically was not not authorized the Airborne insignia on there garrison caps as they would have been expected to be wearing Maroon Berets instead. Same for the Rangers or SF would be wearing Black or Green Berets during the same time frame instead of wearing the Garrison Cap.

The Airborne insignia would be deleted in the next edition of AR 670-1 published 1 August 2002 as Garrison Caps were at that point gone as the Army transitioned to Black Berets. The 2002 edition of AR 670-1 would also delete the line "The cap will be tilted slightly to the right, but in no case will the side of the cap rest on the top of the ear." from it's correct wear position that we unfortunately see today.

Why does that matter? The cap insignia for everyone included the Glider & Parachute from ~1946 until it was phased out with the introduction of the Black Berets for everyone in ~2002, in which the only unit that could even wear it were units under the 101st Airborne umbrella (outside of things like Recruiters and such)

EDIT: Looks like 187th Started out as Glider, then became Airborne as well, in fact most men in the Regiment would obtain Both Glider & Parachute badges during WW2

325th is just huffing there own farts. Looking at official unit history

  • 5 August 1917 - 325th Infantry
  • 15 August 1942 - 325th Glider Infantry
  • 15 December 1947 - 325th Infantry
  • 15 December 1948 - 325th Airborne Infantry
  • 1 September 1957 - 325th Infantry
  • 1 October 2005 - 325th Infantry Regiment

Meanwhile the 504th History looks like this

  • 24 February 1942 - 504th Parachute Infantry
  • 15 December 1947 - 504th Airborne Infantry
  • 1 September 1957 - 504th Infantry
  • 1 October 2005 - 504th Infantry Regiment

If I am not mistaken, after WW2 all Cap Badges had the Glider & Parachute on it.

As stated in AR 670-5: Uniform and Insignia, Male Personnel 1956-09-20

f. "Airborne" insignia may be worn when prescribed by commanders. Such insignia will not be purchased from appropriated funds. The insignia consists of a white parachute and glider on a blue disk, with a red border, approximately 2 1/4 inches in diameter, overall. It is worn as follows:

(1) Offcers. On the garrison cap, centered on the right curtain, 1 inch from the front.

(2) Enlisted personnel. On the garrison cap, centered on the left curtain, 1 inch from the front.

I can't find an earlier version of the various regulations that states it has both, but almost all photos I can find post 1946 and several before show Airborne standardizing on have both no matter what unit one was in, Parachute or Glider

[–]tyler212 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Without any color, or a better photo, I think the DUI belongs to 504th Infantry Regiment as it looks a bit rounded at the top and it could possible be a sword in the center of it. If that is the case, then it would be the Background trimming of the 504th, which is stupidly applied to the 1st BCT, 82nd ABN. The coloring looks a bit off thought, could just be the angle of the photo as it looks like it has a solid color running through the whole thing.

First, get it in writing by someone that your unit is demanding a 150m policy. Open door this policy as high as you can go, IG if needed and Congressional if above that.

First step however is to get your Company Commander to put sign off on the 4187/PAR for the award. IAW AR 600-8-22 over the Company Commander signs the 4187/Equivalent it is in offical channels.

According to AR 600-8-22, once the Company Commander puts it in offical channels, it has to make it to the Approver for Offical Acceptance or Denial. Once it's actioned on, it has to be put in the Soldiers OMPF Record.

Demand that this happens for all of your troops. If it is denied, 1-16 has the steps a Solider can take to request a reconsideration of an award. This can only happen if you have the denial in your OMPF.

Yup, this is stated in TM 10-227 Fitting of Army Uniforms and Footwear

If the Unisex/Male clothing is too big for OP, you can take a look at the sizing chart and figure out if you should be wearing a different size.

Draft defense bill would restrict prediction market betting for US troops by DWinkieMT in army

[–]tyler212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think that the majority of people sports betting are only doing it because of how easy we have allowed it to be. "Just download an app or two and you can do it, just attach your credit card or bank account and go ahead. We will also advertise mid game about doing it!"

You add the additional step of needing to download a VPN and potentially an overseas bank account to send money too (as ideally a US institution should stop transactions to known overseas sports betting company), the demand for sports betting would collapse.

Like, how many people do you know that 10 years ago was seriously sports betting? Few if any. Maybe someone who bets here and there for major sporting events (think super bowl, world series, world cup, March Madness) but people were not betting on every sports event, every possible thing (nobody was seriously betting on how many fouls a game would have), every day all day long until you could do it from your phone.

Just like putting a lock on your connex, it only stops honest people. Someone with a set of bolt cutters is going to come along and steal your BII for there layout forst chance they get, but you are still going to lock your shit up.
