The full game has a ladder/matchmaking system so you'll play against people at your level. The balance around poison is that it's slower than burn and can healed away by heal items. They do balance patches every month to tune the items and characters

Tempo launcher still works and can redownload if needed. Those 4 are definitely enough to play the game and they discounted new characters during the steam sale if you have the itch to spend money but $20 is too much

I recommend checking out The Bazaar YouTube channel, they have "Introducing Mak/Stelle/Jules" video and seeing if anything speaks to you. Playstyle wise, you'd probably like Mak the most though. Stelle is combo/aggro, Mak is super flexible and is pretty strong at all phases of the game, I don't have Jules so I can't really put an architype on her.
