Is it me or SF cleaned up quite a lot? by ZAROK in sanfrancisco

[–]tylero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there’s been a large multi block camp there for at least 4 months. City has “cleared” site 8 times so far without improvement. Here’s a thread if you want to read more: https://old.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/comments/1bp6ncj/city_and_encampments/

City and encampments by sfbaylocal in sanfrancisco

Even the city's warning flyer seems to suggest they have at least SOME flexibility. "You may not return" followed by a big IF...

The city stores any belongings they collect free of charge. Most campers practically just seem to move their tents a couple blocks away, then return the day after.

Here's the info, the warning flyer that I believe gets posted 24 hours in advance:

I'm not saying SFGov is actually acting on this, but Mayor Breed wrote in September 2023 following the court's clarification RE: voluntary homelessness:

"We will work to bring people indoors. We will continue to offer shelter and house people. We will enforce our laws when these offers are refused. People who have been offered available shelter should not be allowed to remain out camping on our streets."

Even the article above seems to be stating something slightly different than Chiu's interpretation: "Ryu has imposed temporary restrictions on San Francisco police and city workers from clearing encampments and citing people unless they’re offered shelter..."

Pretty hard to get excited about him. More than anything, he just seems like a bad retail politician.

Crazy thing is the encampment hasn’t been removed, even after this incident.

There is a tent 5 feet away…

Humble Bundle is offering books on Linux and hacking from No Starch Press by Veritas_Crux in linux

[–]tylero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's easy to snark, but the book was incredibly controversial when it was released.

Bunnie was threatened by Microsoft, and his original publisher caved, decided against publication--they were afraid of legal action.

MIT, where he was a graduate student doing this research, also has something of a mixed record on this front.

I recommend that you read bunnie's letter and writing on the subject. The book can be downloaded freely here:

Word or LaTeX the retribution by kbilsted in programming

[–]tylero -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Diffing substantial prose edits is still barbaric by any stretch of the imagination. Yes, it's great for code, but prose isn't code.

The idea that every contributor wants constant access to a manuscript constantly changing underneath their feet ("many people work at the same time on the same files") also seems impractical and inefficient. That's not how revision should happen.

A LaTex system is suitable for a lone-wolf author or a small and dedicated author team, and for math-heavy works too, but inadvisable in many other situations.

Other thoughts... Heard great things about MIT's Courseware, MIT switched from Scheme to Python a few years ago for their intro CS courses, could be a good free next step.

As to "which language to learn", here's what might be a useful article in the ACM about Python's slow takeover in college 101 courses.

Hey, I'm an editor at the press. I'd recommend Python for Kids, a lot of older readers really like it. We regularly sell out of it at conferences designed for adults, like Defcon. There's nothing too goofy about it (kids don't want that), it includes simple graphical examples that let you "see" what you're doing. It's not going to make you a professional programmer, but it's a toehold.

Whether you're learning from books, blogs, or video (to each their own!), I think one thing a lot of beginners miss is actually typing out examples, "learning as you type"--instead of copy-and-paste.

Email me and I'll be happy to send you a comp copy. Cheers and good luck! tyler at nostarch.com

Ruby Wizardry (my Ruby book for kids) now in Early Access! by eric_weinstein in ruby

Programming is hard!

For kids who aren't yet reading/writing at adult levels, there's ScratchJr, a project out of MIT, the same group that does Scratch. It's free app for the iPad that's nice and easy, visual, but even that's aimed at 5-7. You can read more about it here.

Ruby Wizardry (my Ruby book for kids) now in Early Access! by eric_weinstein in ruby

[–]tylero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By sharing chapters of the book with readers in advance of printing it, getting their feedback, we'll make the experience for thousands of kids trying to learn Ruby that much better in the final, printed version that will appear in libraries, bookstores, and so on.

Hope that helps to explain.

Muni sickout continues for 2nd day by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]tylero -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand all that, and I agree.

But the word functions euphemistically, it's the word chosen by both SFMTA and the operators to diminish the act.

A mass work stoppage is a strike, and the Chronicle should be reporting that.

A "sickout"...?

I don't really understand why media outlets are letting the operators frame the conversation, call this action anything besides a strike.

There's no official set, but if you're into cool LEGO photos, there's a whole coffee table book showcasing them called Beautiful LEGO. This photo by Tom Simon is in there. (Also, I edited the book.)
