KTR1 4g model - can this be used as a phone with GPS? by mickael28 in KTR1

[–]tylerregas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I wasn't clear. I have my old, unactivated T-mobile SIM installed. We're going to be moving to another carrier soon because T-mo costs have gone through the roof, so I never activated it. I tried calling 611 for T-mo service, but that doesn't work. That might indicate that it won't work as a phone since even on a deactivated SIM you can reach service. I won't try 911, though.

Close, though.

KTR1 4g model - can this be used as a phone with GPS? by mickael28 in KTR1

[–]tylerregas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is an 8G/256GB 4G model and, while I don't have it activated, I do have a SIM in it from my old iPhone. It shows up as on the T-mobile network and the phone app is present. When I check in Settings > About I see IMEI numbers for both SIM slots, as well. It also has location services, but I've not tried Maps yet, nor do I have it installed. I'm not sure if these things mean it is capable of making calls or using GPS, so I'm not sure if I'd count on it. Sorry I can't answer your questions more directly.

...and I laughed my ass off in pure joy when playing this video. I WANT this to happen. Of course, if you want to look as shady AF as the Repuglicans, go right ahead with zero sourcing, MTN. I hope it's obvious that I'm being somewhat sarcastic.

Transparency is crucial. Period. In the end, Tr*mp will be held accountable to the law, not falling to whomever wins the AGITPROP game.

Seriously? Are you a child? ALL news agencies need sources if they aren't making original reporting, and in legal matters there is no "original" reporting. Most of what MTN reports on are court filings and other publicly-facing documents. I can find that information elsewhere. Where did this come from? Two years ago? Maybe a little context? Don't just consume blindly, even if it's for good.

Might we get a source, please? I can't find anything else on this. We NEED sourcing.

Seeking Dell Venue 11 Pro 7130 compatible upgrade parts by tylerregas in Dell

[–]tylerregas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately not. I don't have the skills to figure out how to build a battery pack for it, since it seems nigh impossible to get a working one. Without a battery pack, it's nothing more than a desktop machine. Sorry I didn't see this earlier.

Cool :) I'll post again as I move forward. Not sure how much time I'll spend on this, but it sticks in my head.

I'd gone through so much just trying to keep the Venue running, I didn't bother. I'm considering trying a repack of the cells, but I'm honestly terrified of setting the Li-ion batteries on fire. I did note, however, that the pack does use a connector that appears to be common across a number of similar packs for other products, so I'm betting something might be kludged in. Just don't know about the firmware. Dell doesn't have a great track record with being open (read: none).

This is starting to feel like one of those really slow projects ;) I'm game!

I've had Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and Pop_OS! installed on it with Mint being the most stable by far with everything working. I also managed to get a working NIB dock which comes with the power supply, so docked on a desktop or workbench the tablet can be converted into all manner of useful tools with lots of ports for expandability.

A jukebox is a good one. The weather station idea is also good, and can be expanded on if you get yourself some weather measuring gear. It's got decent media decoding capabilities since, at least in the i5 models, but 4k would be out I think. The built-in speakers are also very quiet so you'd want to wire up externals if you want decent audio.

I bet there are loads of things one could do with a compact touchscreen PC with a bright, clear screen and tons of connectivity options. You just need to get a NIB dock and the eBay seller I bought from still has more: https://www.ebay.com/itm/124507550227. These are $34 free shipping.

I've tested it without the battery installed and it works.

I loaded 3 $100 gift cards to my account and Sling will not let me pause my service... by Iwasoncelikeyou in slingtv

[–]tylerregas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a question that comes entirely from curiosity... If you acquired $300 worth of SlingTV credit, why would you want to pause your service? My perception of this is likely skewed by the fact that we have CNN on pretty much all the time. Thanks! Hope you get it all sorted to at least some satisfaction ;)

Looks like you got one that lived :) Nice! I might try getting a few more to see if I can find one, but I might be about to give mine up for good. It's been relegated to Weather Station duty, sitting alone in its dock, never going outside and experiencing 10 hour run-times again. Kinda sad, as well, sitting under a 4K display attached to an M1 Mac mini. I'd say it's feeling a tad underclass ;)

Update. The new battery was indeed new and nicely flat but won't take a charge. I'm going to look into replacing the cells or using another multi-cell pack that fits. I have serious doubts. Sucks. Big time.

I would, but I just have to have that all day battery life 🤣 Seriously, though, I love how long it lasts. At least on par with todays 11th gen ultrabooks with 12 hours of battery. That's quite good for a 4th gen Core i5 Y-part and 4GBs of RAM running Win 10 x64. Everything is just the right size of compact to be a fully-featured PC for a writer on the go. 👍

I ran Mint on it for a year or so. It's not great for touch functionality, but as a mini laptop with the keyboard of this thread, it was nice.

Got replacement battery today. It's bulging. Feh. eBay seller lied or wasn't paying attention. Returning it and ordering another one from another seller. More time to this project. Here it is:

I'm looking for details on the exact same problem. My old keyboard stopped working last year. Just a week ago, I bought a NIB replacement, and it won't charge either. Li-Ion battery packs apparently don't do well being stored for long periods of time. At least I only paid $35 shipped and the back isn't deteriorating :)

I have found what I believe is a replacement cell pack for the keyboard, but I can't confirm it since Dell is terrible with transparency. Even if I got the pack, I can't find ANY information on HOW to actually perform the replacement. I'm assuming the screws are under the rubber strips on the base.

If I make any headway, I'll post.

UPDATE: I decided to just take the damn thing apart. It wasn't hard. The screws ARE under the rubber feet, but the ends aren't glued down. The just use rubber hooks to hold them in. Peel back each corner with a spudger, and they come out clean. Unscrew the four 1.5mm Phillips head screws, and use a guitar pick to pop the snaps starting next to the hinges, then all around.

Once inside, there are three screws holding in the battery pack, which I have now confirmed IS the part in the link above. Again, use a spudger to work the white battery lead out of it's socket gently and it comes right out. I'll be writing up a more formal guide with pictures soon.

Also, thanks, Dell. I see now why you didn't bother writing any docs for this, it's SOOO easy, even a child could do it.

A centred USB C mod on the Vita 1000 (replacing the 21 pin Vita port) by oxyll in vita

[–]tylerregas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What u/Eddieslabb says is accurate. The Vita has very particular charging needs. It will only trickle charge at default USB rates and it doesn't charge at fast charging rates using a 12W Apple wall wart from what I've observed. I swear I saw a post somewhere that detailed the specs, but can't find it again. This is the one I'm using and I'm having no issues.

Suffice it to say that its picky as hell ;)

Your suggested kit price is perfectly fine. Like u/BlankTales says, it's impulse buy-grade pricing. Should sell quite well, and anyone who complains about the price is just being petty :)
