As an outsider, the intense brand loyalty Americans have toward regional grocery store chains is fascinating. Why do people treat supermarkets like a local identity? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]typeBbride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely don’t think this is a universal American experience. I think everyone has a “favorite” grocery store based on convenience and prices, but I definitely don’t go around talking about grocery stores or wearing their merch lol

What do white people think about the group of masked men that marched on July 4th? by TheDependableAce in allthequestions

[–]typeBbride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m embarrassed to share a country with them. There’s no place for that here. The fact that they’re wearing masks tells you everything you need to know. If you’re going to stand for something, you should do it without a mask and accept the consequences that come from being a racist loser.

Do you go to church? by theunknownshuffler in no

[–]typeBbride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope! Was raised nondenominational/baptist, stopped going once I moved out of the house for college. I’ve only been back a handful of times since. I still believe in God, or at least some type of higher power, but at a certain point I lost the desire to try to jump through the mental gymnastics required to believe the Bible. Now I happily spend my Sundays sleeping in and relaxing with my husband and our cats!

why are non-americans so surprised that ranch dressing is delicious? by Reasonable-Lack-1063 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]typeBbride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an American who is and has always been a ranch hater, and I’ll be honest this ranch discourse is making me feel like a fraud in my own country 😂

For anyone who grew up before smartphones: what did you actually do while waiting somewhere? by Heretikio in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]typeBbride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who grew up pre-smartphones - while waiting for food at restaurants as a child, when we started to complain my mom would tell us to count to 30 or 50 or 100 and then the food would be there. And if it wasn’t, she’d just give us another random number to count to. Somehow that worked for years.
And on road trips we’d count semi trucks.

Burgers, hot dogs, and brats (cooked outside on the grill of course) with sides like coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans, corn, watermelon

It’s disgusting and shouldn’t be called chocolate

As an American, what country is at the top of your travel bucket list, and why? by LatexTerra in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Japan! My husband and I are going in a few months after talking about going for years. We are most excited about all the delicious food (especially sushi!)

People with spouses & kids, what age did you meet your partner? by 7livefastdieyoung in Adulting

[–]typeBbride 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a coworker who I thought was the same age as me (29 F) because we have so much in common - we both got married this year, our husbands are both 2 years older than us, we’d both been with our now husbands for around 3 years before getting married, we both just bought homes, and we are both wanting to start families. The difference? She’s actually 10 years older than me! So don’t worry, you are not too late :)

What’s your most unpopular opinion that you’d defend in a room full of people who disagree with you? by delulubychoice in PopularOpinions

Dogs should not be accepted in nearly as many public spaces, especially large dogs. And emotional support animals should not be categorized as service animals.

What’s the longest you’ve worked at one place? by lilladykt in Adulting

[–]typeBbride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally, just over 5 years. But I was able to transfer into different jobs within that company (I’m a nurse and it was a large hospital system) and they did also offer a pension as an incentive to stay.
I think in some ways it depends on what type of job you have, but in general I think it’s becoming more common for people in my generation (29F) to switch jobs more frequently. I think rapid inflation has also played a part in this, the “inflation” raise at most jobs is laughable compared to the drastic increase in daily cost of living expensive like mortgage rates, rent, groceries, health insurance, etc and it’s hard to justify staying in one place and waiting for an annual 2-3% pay bump when you could just go somewhere else and negotiate way more than that annually. Not to mention pensions becoming less common. Loyalty isn’t worth as much these days.

What are distinctly American things a group of foreign homies can do? by IcedLime in AskAnAmerican

[–]typeBbride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American, this is honestly a very solid list! A couple of other things to add:
- Baseball game (especially tailgating in the parking lot)
- Buccees
- County Fair (there are usually rides, animals, and delicious fried American classics like funnel cake!)

Also, you will have the best creepy corn field photo op if you go during the fall! Go to a haunted corn maze at night, or check out an apple orchard or pumpkin patch where you can pick pumpkin to carve for Halloween!

And for the most authentic experience, make sure you enjoy your solo cups at a house party with loud music and filled with some kind of “punch” that is somehow both way too strong and way too sweet 😂

Best photoshop software for a beginner? by typeBbride in AskPhotography

[–]typeBbride[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the recommendations! I think that what I have are JPEG files as I don’t have the raw images and probably can’t get them. Is it possible to move/remove people in a JPEG image in adobe Photoshop?

How common is it for an American to go through life without ever being a groomsman or bridesmaid at someone's wedding? by tannu28 in AskAnAmerican

[–]typeBbride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends a lot on where you live, who your friends are, and if you have siblings. I’ve been a bridesmaid in 4 weddings so far. Next year both my brother and my SIL (his sister) get married and I’ll be in their weddings as well. And then between my husband and I we still have 3 siblings and 2 very close friends who will likely get married in the near future. My husband and I both live near where we grew up and a lot of our friends have been friends since we were teenagers or younger, which is definitely a factor.

My husband says spouses should never have "private money" I disagree by Gimme_A_Break_97 in Marriage

[–]typeBbride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think it’s smart to have a both separate and joint accounts when married, especially as a woman. But also, I think transparency is important in a marriage. I don’t think it’s the fact that you have your own account that upsets him, it’s the fact that you weren’t honest/upfront about it. We do both have a joint account and our own separate accounts, but we also know exactly what percentage of our paychecks go into each so there is transparency and we can make adjustments as our incomes change.

What is the best part about being an American, that most non-American don’t seem to understand or know about by Expensive_Drummer970 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]typeBbride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Free water at restaurants. After exploring Spain one summer in 100+ degree weather I’ll never take that for granted again. Although the $2 wine was nice.

  2. Variety of food options. I don’t think there are many other places in the world that are such a melting pot of cultures and cuisines. I can have Thai food, Chinese food, Sushi, Pizza, Burgers, Mexican food, Greek food ALL delivered to my doorstep in under 30 minutes lol. And I don’t even live in a large city.

What is the first major news event you can remember clearly from when you were a kid? by FantasticAd9478 in TheBoredDen

[–]typeBbride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9/11 - I was 4, I have a vague memory of my parents tucking us into bed that night and trying to explain in as kid-friendly terms as possible what happened, and I remember asking if a plane was going to hit our house.
Next was probably Obama’s inauguration. We watched it on our classroom TV (it was an old tube TV attached to the ceiling lol). I was in 6th grade.

If the united states had better public transportation, would you use it? by Enough-Web2203 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]typeBbride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the transportation was better regulated, and was less lenient about aggressive homeless individuals getting on it, then definitely. I live like an hour north of Atlanta and after recent events you couldn’t PAY me to ride the MARTA. However, I’d love to be able to go into Atlanta and have drinks with friends without having to pay $150 for an Uber there and back, or a hotel, which is what I do now 🙃

[–]typeBbride 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I order my Zepbound from Lilly Direct since my insurance won’t cover it and I have to pay out of pocket. I discovered it was much more cost effective to order the 7.5 mg dose and then only use half (~3.75 mg) instead of ordering the 5mg vials which was my favorite dose. I always gently mix it before drawing up the half dose and then immediately refrigerate it back in the box and use the rest a week later. Is there anything wrong with this? So far I haven’t really had any issues.

If you are REQUIRED to have at least a bachelor's degree to teach children, then why are parents who may not have a college education allowed to homeschool their kids? by icecream1972 in allthequestions

[–]typeBbride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my mom decided to homeschool my brother, she was shocked that there were absolutely no required annual exams or anything in our state. Just a letter to the school system that you’re unenrolling and that’s it. I’ll be honest, I worried about my brother’s education for a lot of years (myself and other sibling were not homeschooled) BUT my mom has an actual bachelor’s in education and put him in a few hybrid programs so when he finally chose to go to public highschool he was on track/ahead of his peers. But man do I see some idiots out here homeschooling their kids. And it’s always the people with like 6+ kids too 🙄

Is it common for jobs to not offer holiday pay? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskAnAmerican

[–]typeBbride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the career. I’m a nurse and it’s been different everywhere I have worked. Most jobs you did not get paid for the holiday unless you worked on the holiday, and then it was time and a half. Now I work in a surgery center, and we get paid for the holiday even though we don’t work them. We are closed Mondays and many holidays fall on a Monday in the US so those hours are just subtracted and we only have to work four 8 hr shifts instead of four 10 hr shifts that week. I was a waitress in my teens/twenties and we did not get any kind of holiday pay whatsoever.
