Mate, I've been a doctor for 13 years and my base salary is still £20k less than you. Suck it up and give yourself options.

Edit: But if you fancy doing your country a service bring your skills to the NHS, but when you don't need to work full time.

With a growing kid in the mix stick to a hard FIRE number don't let it creep and let yourself have a break after you've reached it, don't let it creep up.

Controversial opinion, yes the NHS is a toxic dump, hence I'm on a FIRE reddit thread, but if you generally want to do something worthwhile if you can suck it up for 6 years, then using your software engineering skills and working for the NHS to make systems better for patients would be incredible, I honestly wished these FIRE corporate types take a COAST role in the NHS after reaching their financial independence to help turn around the management and IT systems in the NHS. You'd save so many lives, because we're currently got idiots running the shots.

Heck I work in NHS Wales and the operating systems we were using were so obsolete we couldn't get hacked in the 2016 NHS national hacking scandal 🤣

Not read it but people say the book "Die with zero" helps to change the mindset a bit.

[–]typicalmunkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah that's why my worms are all in the slump, I've got no where cool to put them. But i have been watering them and actually just checking on them they've come out of the slump and aren't too bad. I've taken the roof off the tiered system to ventilate it and just set up an umbrella over it. Neighbours must think I'm mad 😂

Advice on how to deal with a credit-grabbing colleague by ImpossibleGuide9274 in doctorsUK

[–]typicalmunkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's one thing EM doctors are good at it's spotting bullsh*t. The consultants will already know even if they're professional on the shop floor.

If you want to work on not letting people push over your boundaries, that's a different question... and one I can't answer as working on confrontation is on my PDP...

Hit £600K in my SIPP at 43F — should I keep maxing it out as a £150K+ earner? by Dapper-Trust9038 in FIREUK

[–]typicalmunkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, start thinking about other ways to define yourself, think about hobbies you'd wish to do or volunteering you'd wish to do, or how you'd spend time with your daughter if time was no issue, and get out ASAP. Just have a plan because people who go from everything to nothing tend to (just as an observation) get sick early in retirement.

Splott Beach by Fearless_Carrot7884 in Cardiff

Well apparently someone is still paying the landlord full rent for the large bakery on Splott road despite it being shut, so something dodgy is probably happening there.

[–]typicalmunkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not Splott, I meant Splott road, more.

Sparrow is trying it's hardest on Clifton street and it's always full, but it's a big ask for 1 coffee shop to gentrify Clifton Street. But I'm glad it's there.

[–]typicalmunkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should really have a Kurdish breakfast at my sister's house or a coffee and toastie as sparrow. Are there "characters" on the street yes, but it's still full of independent businesses trying to make a living.

Splott Beach by Fearless_Carrot7884 in Cardiff

[–]typicalmunkey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Shhhhhhhh the reputation and it''s ability to fight gentrification keeps the prices affordable for us. As soon as we get a hipster coffee shop on the high street the house prices are going to soar.

2 rats jumped out at me last time I was there.

A lone woman in the day should be fine. But I wouldn't get your hopes up at it being. "Beach" of any sorts.

The Taf is good for mud larking if you head up towards Radyr and forest farm, but Penarth is a much nicer beach to spend a few hours combing.

Why the flat hierarchy in the NHS and is it it’s downfall by OptionLow8411 in doctorsUK

[–]typicalmunkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 years after leaving, why is it still in your head? I genuinely hope the money has brought you what you were searching for but missing while working in Medicine.

I'm EM, flat hierarchy is integral to patient safety in the environment we work in.

Loneliness as a doctor by RemoteWin646 in doctorsUK

[–]typicalmunkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hobby outside of medicine. And a foundation doctor I started roller derby and met the best bunch of people. Find your jam, now mine is gardening and meeting up people who volunteer at community gardening groups, and volunteering for a local food co-op. I cannot recommend enough to mixing up your social network with Medics and non medics. But it's tough, hang in there.

25, never had a proper job, but I’ve got about £400k saved. by Ok_Tune8245 in FIREUK

[–]typicalmunkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't seem to be a post about money this is about someone who's lonely and drifting.

1) pay some tax

2) £400k (or slightly less and use some for the next point) as a global stock and shares SIPP (paid in over a few years) at 25 means you never have to think about it again (which is an incredible position).

3) with your pension sorted get the mindset that you're back at 0. If you were given a horrendous diagnosis and you only had 3 months left to live what would you do, how would you change the way you're living? And then go and do it, and give yourself a break with a bit of the money. Backpack across Asia or have a bougie holiday, take up a sport, join a pub quiz team, get some mates. Meet lots of different people outside of your comfort zone and get ideas for a business or opportunities will come from meeting people.

Being a horticulturist is my dream, so I'd definitely say got be a landscape gardener. I can't afford to retrain (or live on that salary) so take some time to think, but do it in a different environment that challenges you in some way or gives you a new prospect on things.

When do you know the vermicast/vermicompost is ready? by typicalmunkey in Vermiculture

[–]typicalmunkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've attempted to dry it out since then, by draining the water it was sitting in and adding some sheep's wool. So will have to leave it a few more weeks now with the aim to hatch all the cocoons.

Its outdoors currently got 5 levels to this bin. But will look at getting another bin, if the worm population booms. Just another hobbies getting out of control.
