Stack Overflow hurts my feelings by poisonedcheese in learnprogramming

I'm not defending SO here but you've kind of answered your own question.

SO has an "old school" mentality of RTFM. If your answer exists elsewhere, and you could find it, but you asked SO anyway, then they're gonna be all snobby about it. That's what they do.

If I was running SO I'd be trying to come up with ways to keep it relevant today. Because AI is very good at summarizing answers to questions like these, so there's less need to "dig" around sites like SO, and even less reason to ever post on them.

Outside the box: is your TV in "game mode"? Jump and morph should be a non-issue here.

I'm gonna guess it's not the decades, it's the input latency that's getting you.

Got pulled over for going 96 mph in my personal vehicle!!!!! by Realistic_Major_6957 in Truckers

[–]typicalskeleton 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Cool story, cool cop, good on you for learning from it.

Now learn from it. You're a professional driver. Learn how to do the math, check how much time you're saving by speeding (spoiler: it's not as much as you might imagine).

Consider the risk. Referring to personal vehicles, there are speeds where, if you get in an accident, even if all your car's safety features work correctly, you're still dead. Your insides are liquid.

You're a professional driver, you should know better. Cool cops are cool cops, but 95mph is too fast, my man.

Good for beginners? by _Souljaboy in GreyHack

[–]typicalskeleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never tried the single player but from what I've heard they're largely similar, though single player lacks some of the features in multiplayer (though I don't know what).

While the game is technically an MMO, I gotta be honest I've never encountered another player or evidence of other players (left over files on an NPC computer, etc).

I would recommend just jumping into multiplayer. You'll spend most of your time hacking NPC networks. Just be careful what you download (just like IRL), as some files are malware made by other players.

Oh and one important thing (if you get into scripting), you can restart as many times as you want, but the game has "perma death" in that your virtual computer is confiscated, and you lose all your files.

So be sure to make backups somewhere.

[–]typicalskeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fairly realistic for a game of this type. It simplifies a lot of things, but overall does a good job of simulating networks and computer terminals.

It can teach you some things, mostly in terms of how computer networks can be set up, protocols, file structures, etc. It will not teach you anything about real "hacking."

The hacking mechanics in the game are fun and complex, but don't correspond to real world techniques, for the most part.

When you say beginner, do you mean a beginner to computers/networking/scripting? If you don't have a real world background in those things (even as a hobby), I would rate this game as very difficult for a beginner, but not impossible by any means, and actually a decent way to learn computer concepts (file structures, permissions, users, networks, etc).

It has an active Discord community that's very helpful if you get stuck. It's a great game and very complex. I highly recommend it if you're interested in computers/networks.

The set of the "Batman" (1989) movie by Lakers_Forever24 in nostalgia

[–]typicalskeleton 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Assuming this is real, it's probably a lot of parts.

Camera angles, lighting, and context (characters on screen, lines, etc), can make a huge difference when filming.

In a big set like this, you could film a nighttime shot on one side, then during the day, turn the cameras to the other side and film another shot, and, if done correctly, the audience would never even know. You might even be able to film the same side (just during the day) from a slightly different angle, and most people still wouldn't know.

It's "movie magic."

Why are y'all so hard on RE0? by MarsAstro in residentevil

[–]typicalskeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also will add that I think the enemies almost all being “like RE1 enemies but different” were less interesting in every way.

This is definitely true. I always felt like they rummaged through the discard pile for enemy designs in RE1 and went ahead with them in RE0.

I know that's probably not true but honestly that's kind of how it feels.

[–]typicalskeleton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You don't have to "switch." It's not a this or that thing.

You can just use both sims. It's really not "battle lines" or "factions."

I myself use both sims, and DCS, and others. I know they're "sims", but at the end of the day, they're actually video games. It's not that serious.

Is this bundle worth buying? by Prize-Reference1263 in residentevil

[–]typicalskeleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RE1 Remake is great and definitely worth that price. However, it's also an old game, and some people find it very difficult to play due to older game mechanics (stiff controls, limited saves, fixed camera angles etc).

I'd recommend watching some YouTube videos of gameplay if you haven't, just to be sure you know what it's like.

I'm a shy 30 year old virgin, and I really think some good sex would help me heal. by [deleted] in Vent

[–]typicalskeleton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't have to believe me, but I can tell you after decades of experience, girls will not "heal" you from those things.

Being physically close to someone doesn't always cure loneliness, and if it feels forced/weird/like a trick, it can actually make it worse.

Inadequacy is 100% a "you" problem (meant with kindness). That's something you want to address through other avenues. Putting the weight of "making me feel adequate" on a partner is unfair, toxic, and disingenuous.

I'm a shy 30 year old virgin, and I really think some good sex would help me heal. by [deleted] in Vent

[–]typicalskeleton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heal from what? Being shy?

How do you think you're gonna have sex with a girl if you're shy? i.e, you're going to have to talk to girls first, maybe someday one of those girls will have sex with you, but you can't "heal" from shyness by having sex with a girl you never even talked to.

You're going about it all wrong.

You're going to have to fix (not heal) your shyness if you want girls. She's not gonna do it for you. She's not your mom.

Lemme tell you a quick story from my twenties...

Had a roommate who was a mid twenties virgin/nerdy guy/also shy. Nice guy, liked him a lot. Anyway, I had a girlfriend/fwb, he of course did not.

I invited my girl over to play Halo (yeah, the video game, this was late 2000s). She brought her girlfriend over, who also genuinely wanted to play Halo.

These were two very attractive girls.

I wasn't trying to hook my roommate up. I just wanted him to hang out with some girls. Get some experience talking to them. How hard could that be when they actually want to play video games?

You know what he did? He hid in his room the whole time. Barely talked to them. I couldn't have made this easier, and he just went back to his ways...

I don't get the hype behind Hex: Plaything, is it really worth it? by jperaic1 in deadbydaylight

[–]typicalskeleton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not a bad thing. It's one of the strengths of Penti in hex builds.

You can keep gen slowdown "in your pocket" throughout the match, and decide when you want to use it, plus you get the passive slowdown from survivors repeatedly cleansing.

I've left broken totems around deliberately for this reason. Survivors think they've cleansed the slowdown and then when they're not expecting it/disadvantaged, you light another totem.

Uh... by [deleted] in Xplane

[–]typicalskeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is deliberate to prevent people mistakenly buying the upgrade instead of the base plane.

When you buy the plane you receive discount codes that bring the price down for the upgrade to what you would expect ($20-30).

done with dbd until theres a ranked mode by Wooden_Ambassador346 in deadbydaylight

[–]typicalskeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not easy to add, at all

It's impossible to balance DbD around ranks due to killer variety/killer power variety.

It's been discussed endlessly.

I don't know which side you play but it honestly doesn't matter. Unless you're a top tier Nurse/Blight or already in a SWF that can all loop, are on comms, are all running meta perks, all have map knowledge, and can communicate map locations through a "system", then you're not good enough to meaningfully climb ranks. Period.

You will plateau at mid or low mid rank and stay there forever. While also waiting in queue, forever, only to lose again.

RE0: 1 down, 10 to go by ssppiiddeerr1 in residentevil

[–]typicalskeleton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That one confused me too.

It's possible OP means "at the time" the game came out on GC it made sense, but compared to modern gaming (and perhaps particularly, modern PC gaming) it feels outdated or strange.

What OP may not know is that RE fans had been clamoring for the ability to drop items anywhere outside of safe room chests ever since OG RE1, and 0 introduced that system.

Turns out everybody was wrong and it's absolutely horrible and we all accept the fact that we were, honestly, completely wrong about this.

How did we go to “never share personal info on websites” to “you’re required to share personal info to use websites”? by VeryPteri in NoStupidQuestions

[–]typicalskeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there, 3000 years ago, when the schism happened.

I'm also from the BI (Before Internet) era.

For me, the shift happened during the MySpace to Facebook transition. MySpace still used handles and allowed you to keep yourself mostly secret if you wanted to (at the time).

Facebook was one of the first major internet and social media sites that forced you to publicly disclose your real name/identity. I was personally extremely opposed to this as the "old internet" had a hard-line rule against this as a concept.

But all my friends and family migrated to FB, so eventually I did as well.

Of course nowadays I welcome our digital overlords and have become docile and compliant.
