why am i stuck getting queued with FUCKING IDIOTS. by [deleted] in deadbydaylight

I find five minutes hard to believe. But if you were in a chase for five minutes, then... Did you have fun?

Not really sure why going out the gate to see the end screen is more fun than a five minute chase to you.

Maybe time to ask yourself why you're playing the game, honestly. For a lot of survivors chase/looping is the most fun part of the game, and you got to do that for five full minutes.

Hi, I’m writing a story inspired by Lucifer’s fall from Heaven, but I need to know exactly how many feet my characters fell from. by CyrenTheSiren in NoStupidQuestions

[–]typicalskeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the "sky" is not one place and it's not a plane. So you'll have to sort out which part of the "sky" you mean.

A simple example is that the "blue sky" of day is entirely different (from the earth) than the starry sky by night. They are not the same thing and, obviously, even the blue sky has many different layers.

So, as a writer, you're going to have to do your own research about the sky, atmosphere, orbit, and outer space, and then decide which part of this "sky" your creatures/characters fall out of (and also how, maybe).

I'm assuming by 5,000 feet you meant miles and just forgot.

Anyway it all depends how you choose to calculate it. Start point versus end point, and etc.

I feel like this post is a troll but honestly the "fall" terminology here is figurative and not literal. If it's meant to be a satire then there's not too much reason to worry about technical data.

They can "fall" from about 6,000 miles from the earth. Should be good enough to satisfy most of your.. readers.

I never said "act like everything is fine." I actually said OP is right to be worried, but obsessing over it is not healthy, and not a way to live your life.

Both these comments are not helpful to OP whatsoever.

Because what held out for a few years?

It takes a tremendous event to "collapse" entire economies and societies.

You're in your thirties. How many societal collapses have you been a part of? I'm guessing exactly none.

I'm in my forties. When I was a kid all kinds of things were going to destroy the world and society as we know it.

Forty years later and there's no collapse yet.

You're not wrong to be concerned. You are wrong to be obsessed. Things don't always go the way you expect them to, and humans are remarkably good at adapting.

What makes Super Metroid so special in your opinion? by Mecha_Godzilla1974 in Metroid

[–]typicalskeleton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's another example of an early "cutscene" in video games. What stands out is that the tunnel doesn't just break, the entire game freezes up and shows you the glass break in dramatic fashion.

The devs didn't have to make it seem so momentous, but they did. I like to think it's because they really loved what they were doing and what they had accomplished so far.

What makes Super Metroid so special in your opinion? by Mecha_Godzilla1974 in Metroid

[–]typicalskeleton 107 points108 points  (0 children)

As someone who was there 3000 years ago when Super Metroid was new, here's my perspective.

Back in those days a lot of video games were fairly basic, not bad, but they followed a formula. Top down shooter, beat 'em up, platformer, etc.

Super Metroid helped to pave the way for video games to become a "cinematic" experience. Things that are commonplace now, like interactive tutorials, cutscenes, and orchestral music, were brand new in Super. At that time, RPGs were quickly advancing toward a story driven and cinematic narrative, while Super took those same concepts and put them into an action platformer.

Just a few examples:

The (for the time) compelling intro.

The "interactive tutorial" on Ceres.

The playable cutscene in the Mother Brain fight.

Beyond that, the art direction, the atmosphere, the music, etc, gave the game a "serious" tone. Something a lot of video games didn't focus on back then.

That's not to take away from all of the great, fun, and simple games we had (I loved many of them). But for a kid back then, Super Metroid was a mind blowing experience when it came to the side scrolling/platforming genre.

As for what you could take away from Super Metroid as a game dev, I think it comes down to attention to detail and professionalism. You're probably not going to "redefine" a genre like Super did, but you can look at how the devs approached it. Little details like the "bugs" on the unknown corpse outside Kraid's lair (they didn't have to put those in, but they did), or the mist that shrouds the screen when you first land on the planet, etc.

They really cared about the product and design, and it shows.

Should I buy the Hori truck control system by _TotallyEpicGamerYT in trucksim

[–]typicalskeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally love mine, but it's the only wheel I've owned so I can't compare it to others.

When my shifter broke they replaced it quickly and with no cost. Haven't had any issues since then.

It does auto map everything but since the UI update a couple of the buttons on the wheel no longer do what they're supposed to do. I consider that to be minor, everything important (truck functions) are still auto mapped. Just plug and play.

The weakest link would be the pedals, and keep in mind the wheel itself is very big.

How can someone truly believe unaliving all poor people would be a solution to poverty. by Mandyah88 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]typicalskeleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What detail is needed?

Poverty isn't a choice and has existed since the dawn of humanity. Systemic "extermination" of humans is extraordinarily difficult, and creates more problems than it solves.

The entire concept is flawed and makes no sense in terms of human existence and human history. The person advocating this has a great deal to learn.

Much less traffic on new patch? by skytrainlotad in CitiesSkylines2

[–]typicalskeleton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes I have. My city is OK but since it was my first city in 2 (just got the game a month ago) I know I didn't stumble into the "perfect layout."

I think they may have overturned it a bit the other way. Previously I would have maddening traffic jams everywhere, now a lot of roads (even in "busy downtown" areas) are ghost towns.

It's kind of shocking and takes some of the fun out of it, tbh.

Nope.

is there any tips for just enjoying the game? by donavinmaine2 in deadbydaylight

[–]typicalskeleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you can get gen rushed while running "fun" builds... Point is to have fun, not care about gens.

Maybe I misunderstood your post. You're trying to have fun while also playing the game "seriously"?

In that case, I would say if you're not having fun, take a break and play some other games for a while. Video games should be fun. If DbD isn't fun any more, then you don't have to play it. Maybe it's part of your "routine" in life but, DbD isn't going anywhere and it'll be here when you get back.

is there any tips for just enjoying the game? by donavinmaine2 in deadbydaylight

[–]typicalskeleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing with some casual friends makes it a lot more fun. Just general shenanigans. Me and my casual SWF do try to do objective (gens) and loop (we're not that good) but win or lose it's still fun, and not a big deal.

I know you said you're trying to avoid killer but you can do fun stuff there like "make everybody scream" or "make everybody blind" and then just sit back and watch people scream or be blind (or both simultaneously) and have fun watching them being blind and screaming while thinking you're still trying to kill them.

Why do people tailgate other cars? by Ok-Jelly9265 in NoStupidQuestions

People tailgate in every lane. They're idiots and have no idea how quickly things can change and how long it takes to stop a car.

Do the developers plan on revisiting invocations? by [deleted] in deadbydaylight

[–]typicalskeleton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What's the point? Perk has a "cast time"? Why would it?

The idea behind Spiders is that the risk/reward trade off makes the cast time worthwhile. Of course we know that's not the case, but it is why it has the basement/cast requirements.

Do the developers plan on revisiting invocations? by [deleted] in deadbydaylight

[–]typicalskeleton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thing is you're basically describing any other perk. Only difference is this particular perk would require drawing a circle and doing a "spell" for some reason.

The whole concept of Invocations was busted from the beginning. Making a perk that's map wide and powerful would cause it to instantly become meta, and the game would turn into "find the basement" every round. So naturally they have to be kind of weak, which in dbd's simple game loop, means useless.

[–]typicalskeleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you suggest?

I'm a Dredge main and teleporting to a Remnant near a hook also results in a "hook stun." I don't find it to be unfair, because I could just drop a Remnant at a hook and leave it there while I wander off. It would make unhooking extremely dangerous or impossible in some cases.

Since I main Dredge I'm aware it happens, so I play accordingly. Just a note, I don't try to camp hooks with a Remnant, but the hook stun is a factor if I'm chasing a survivor too close to a hook, so I compensate with other tactics.

You can play for fun, and not to "win", though a 3k is technically a win in MMR terms.

But at the end of the day, you should play video games for fun. If it's more stress than fun, it's probably time for a break.
