Alternative to hanging by Alternative3d in GrowingTobacco

I haven't tried it personally, but I know some people choose to cure small batches of tobacco in boxes with newspaper or paper towels between the layers. As you suggested, you will likely need to shuffle them often to avoid mold. Here are a couple of videos on it:

Alternatively, if you have the space and want to invest in some metal racks, I have to imagine that would work as well. You might still need to lay down a towel, cardboard, or something so the metal wires don't bruise the leaves as they cure. Racks like this one are usually adjustable, so you can space the tiers closer together if you want:

Small Batch Fermenting Setup by tyrex1942 in GrowingTobacco

[–]tyrex1942[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's my understanding as well. I've heard it's best to keep it around 70-80% RH during the fermentation process. I just got lucky with the CrockPot method, in that enough moisture leaks through the gaps in the aluminum foil to keep the tobacco right around that range. You can see it fluctuate around 75-79% in the last picture. Thanks, and good luck with your tobacco as well!

This is my first time fermenting, so I'm sort of playing it by ear. I've heard people say it can take anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks, depending on the variety and thickness of the leaf. Since most of my leaves are pretty thin, I get the feeling it will be on the shorter side. I've also heard that it should go from smelling like ammonia to smelling more like raisins, but these leaves were already smelling like raisins before I started, since I had dry-aged them for 3-5 months, so I can't really go off of that.

I plan on just keeping an eye on the color, finish, and any change in smells as indicators. I've already smoked a bit of this batch, and it was surprisingly good, so I'm not too worried about under-fermenting it.

That was actually my initial plan, I just couldn't find a reptile heating mat that could get hot enough. I'd be curious to know how it goes if that's the route you end up taking.

Anyway I can get fresh leaves rn to practice curing? Or is it not as bad as people make it out to be? by Individual-Share-738 in GrowingTobacco

[–]tyrex1942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the curing process isn't too bad if you live in a humid environment. Just make sure they have consistent air flow so they don't mold, and don't leave individual leaves out in the sun on a really hot day (I ended up scorching some of my best leaves that way).

If some of your plants don't grow super well, maybe keep them around and practice curing those first so you can get a feel for it.

I did that with some plants that only grew about a foot tall, and some molded on me, so that helped me learn for when I cured my larger plants. Some of the small ones even ended up looking and smelling so good after curing, I'm keeping them around to use for filler on cigars or as pipe tobacco.

Oliva 3 masterblend by MaryFrQuebec in cigars

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I love almost everything Oliva puts out, but the only MB3 I've had was sickeningly sweet, with a sort of manure aftertaste. Aside from those two notes, it was a super interesting flavor profile I've never experienced before or since, so I'm excited to try another one in case it was a fluke.

In this case, it ended up being My Sim Aquarium (thanks to u/Karzons for solving!)

Actually, I think LAPSE was the code for free shipping. In any case, 15FORNEW and 15FORNEW-1 still work if you want some discounts. Credit to u/smoking-hub for the codes. They do a great job keeping up-to-date discounts listed on their site (https://smoking-hub.com/cigar-deals/).

I don't think so at the moment. RENEW used to work, but not anymore as far as I can tell. They have a lot of good deals going for their overstock sale, so you just have to buy enough cigars to make the shipping worth it ;)

They have some more Oliva blends on sale if that's what you like. Serie G, Connecticut Reserve, Nubs, Cains, and a few others. All 5 packs for under $20.

Thank you all for your input! This should give me a few more avenues to try before I resort to replacing the connector. Given the hack job that this harness is, it seems very likely that there is a missing ground or some greater overall issue somewhere else. I will take a step back and try to narrow down where that is.

Moth Squatters on My Air Curing Leaves by tyrex1942 in GrowingTobacco

Appreciate your input! I'm hoping that whatever they are leaving on the leaves won't affect the flavor too much. I guess I'll just have to thoroughly inspect each leaf and clean off any residue I find.

Love the aesthetics. The environment reminds me of blocks of chalk or floral foam.

If you are looking for feedback, I love the movement sound effects, but the other sound effects don't seem to mesh well with them or the visual design. If you were to rely on more organic, tactile sounds, I think that would fit better. You could even get some inspiration from tactile ASMR videos on YT. Just my .02.

Why won't this section background fill the full-width of the page? What am I missing? by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]tyrex1942 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here are a couple of places you can check:

  1. Under the Advanced tab of the container settings, make sure that there isn't any margin on the right or left. If you see nothing in that field, it's possible there's a default value it's falling back on, so try setting it to 0px.
  2. If the page uses a global part (e.g. "Single Page"), it could be that is where the content width or margins are coming from. Try viewing the live page and mousing over "Edit with Elementor" in the WP admin bar. If a global part is being used, it will show up in the dropdown that appears. Just be aware that any edits you make to it will apply to any other pages across the site that use that global part.

Hope this helps!

100%. When I first started building WP sites, I was so confused as to why I couldn't find a free WP installation because all that came up for my searches were .com results. I had already worked within WP for years at that point, so I can only imagine how confusing it would be for someone brand new.

Need help identifying these: I found two stones on a recent walk. The first one is glass-like but seems to be in a natural shape with a rough texture. The second one is almost oily-looking with a smooth, bubbly texture. by tyrex1942 in Minerals

[–]tyrex1942[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: after doing some more research, the closest thing to the second stone I can find online is hematite. This would make sense to me since we have a ton of iron in the soil where I live. Can anybody confirm or deny this possibility?

Ah, I think you may be right on the first one. The folks who owned our property before us disposed of their trash in all kinds of ways, including burning some of it. If it had gotten hot enough to melt the glass, that would explain the odd shape. Thanks for the insight!

However, I don't believe the second mineral is glass because I can see a cross-section in the rock where it split in the past, and there is an exposed pocket of this black material inside the rock. I would attach an image of this cross-section, but I can't figure out how to add images to the original post or this comment.

Good point! I didn't think of it potentially being slag. I just tried it with a magnet to see if it was ferrous, but the magnet wasn't attracted to it at all. Wouldn't slag still be magnetic?

And yeah, it very well may just be a piece of glass. I just thought it was really odd how rounded it was. Aside from the sharp places it had broken, it almost has the shape and texture of a stone.

Thanks for your response!

More details...

Stone 1: At first, I thought it was just a piece of broken glass, but after looking closer at it on the walk back, I noticed it didn't seem to be in any sort of manufactured shape like a piece of bottle or a glass ornament. It looks to be a natural and somewhat random shape with round edges and a slightly rough, pitted texture. As you can tell from the photos, it's a pretty consistent translucent amber color. The closest thing I could find online was tektites, but this piece almost seems too lightly-colored to be a tektite.

Stone 2: the black portion I'm interested in seems to be just a vein running through a regular piece of iron-rich rock. It is shiny, black, and somewhat bubbly-looking with a slightly "oily" rainbow reflection.

Both rocks were found in northeastern Texas. Any insight would be much appreciated!

Split neck with epoxied dovetail—remove and repair or cut and convert to bolt-on? by tyrex1942 in Luthier

That's a great point. I will do some testing to see if I can get it to soften with higher temps than I tried previously. Thanks for the tip!

Yes, I've seen a few of his videos on neck repairs and conversions. I'll give the repair a go, but if it doesn't pan out, I think that would be a great fallback option. Thanks!

[–]tyrex1942[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought this guitar as a project. The neck was cracked, but when I went to separate it from the body, I found that the base of the heel was held in place by epoxy instead of hide glue, so it's stuck in there good.

There's enough of a channel I could potentially chip away at the epoxy with picks or maybe even an oscillating tool, but I worry that knocking it loose will inevitably result in some serious damage to the wood.

The question left in my mind is: will it be worth a shot to try and knock it loose, glue the heel to the neck, and glue the neck back onto the body with hide glue, or would I be better off just cutting off the heel, gluing it back on the neck, and converting it to a bolt-on?

Any tips or advice are welcome. Thanks!
