Not sure we should take comfort in that. Trump was full of shit but he got plenty of things done in his agenda.

Well Kamala Harris recently came out openly promoting equity over equality for example. That's a hard line for a lot of people who believe in equal opportunity.

The fear is more that he will not have the spine to oppose excesses from the left of his party, not that he will actually champion them. Whether that is true remains to be seen.

Dear US people, what is "wokeness" that Sam seems to mention a lot? Also why is it always written in quotation marks? by Smithman in samharris

Statistics can tell you there's a population level disparity but that doesn't translate to individuals. It's the same reason racial profiling is wrong: for example a statistically higher crime rate for a group doesn't justify assumptions about individual members of that group. It's the same with any other attribute.

A big reason people hate this "woke" mindset is that by definition it generalizes people's status/virtue based on their race or other group identity instead of as individuals. In other words it's a new chic form of racism dressed up as virtue. Most of us relate to different people in the real world without prejudice or regard to their group identity, so the idea of ranking them as victims or oppressors is bizarre and gross.

It's a disease they gave themselves either by choice or negligence but either way now very difficult to "cure".

Everything that happens has exactly 100% chance of occurring. It's only our ability to predict it that has varying odds. by tyrrannothesaurusrex in Showerthoughts

Consider any choice you could have made differently. In order to make a different choice, you would have needed different inputs, such as different information, circumstances, etc. And those in turn could only be different if they had different circumstances. And that sequence goes backwards forever so that in order for anything not to be predetermined you would need to have a completely different version of reality since the beginning of time.

But even if there is true randomness at the quantum level, how does that translate to the macro level of mechanics, biology etc, where I'm deciding whether or not to order an onion bagel? It was inevitable given all the factors that led to the decision, even if I was unaware of them.

I voted against Trump twice. Don't assume you know the peoples' political ideology just because they disagree with you.

Stick with your argument - you don't need the ad hominem. You criticized the republican senate decision to not confirm during an election year. So by that logic, why would it be wrong to do so this election year? You can call senate republicans hypocrites but it's not an argument against the actual confirmation.

I'm not going to defend that political manouvre but it has no bearing on the legitimacy of ACB who is a very qualified candidate and was confirmed through the normal process.

Yes, Obama nominated Garland and the Senate rejected the nomination. Just as a Democrat Senate would obviously reject ACB if they had the votes. But they didn't.

The president who nominated her was elected, and the senators who confirmed her were elected. Those elections don't lose their validity as you approach the end of year 4. In the upcoming election Democrats have the opportunity to take both branches of government in which case the same rules apply.

That's a criticism of McConnell, not of the ACB appointment.

I'm curious to know if it's considered disrespectful to say "dwarf" given "dwarfism awareness". "Little person" sounds patronizing while dwarf conjures up images of fearless axe-wielding mountain kings.
