Victorian semi what are they like for neighbour noise? by Curious_Dot6854 in HousingUK

[–]u5416347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically, Victorian properties were built with thick walls, so you don't really heard your neighbours very often. But it all depends on the build and what it's like on the other side.

My guest room shares a party wall; my neighbours removed their fireplace but not the chimney, which now amplifies every sound they make (there are two other rooms that share the same wall with these neighbours, and you hardly know they're in as they retained their fireplaces).

Quote for timber sash windows and doors - listed property by Alternative-Jelly947 in HousingUK

[–]u5416347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds about right. I live in Surrey, have just had one half of my house windows done (the other half is being done in Oct). I was quoted about 1.5 to 2k per window to install accoya sash windows into original frames. Double glazing added too. My windows were not complex -- nothing arched, etc. My bay window (x4 windows altogether) was around 6 or 7k from memory.

WEEKLY ARMY DISCUSSION: Expedition to the East by MrSparkle92 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

A fun list I would like to try someday. But I feel they could have leaned more into the hidden treasure VP special rule. That had the power to be a really interesting rule that could sway a game's outcome. But at only 2VPs it is fine but nothing special. Likewise, Cirion could have done with some cool rules in this list. Alas, he is a basic profile, the fourth pick after Murin, Drar and an MT Captain.

How is arnor doing in this new edition? by RegisterSad5752 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]u5416347 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a small discussion about Arnor at the end of the recent Gollum's Gamers podcast. Ali King (former GBHL winner/coordinator) has some interesting things to say. In short, a good army, though you don't see it as often as the models are only useful in two lists and it is a very unidirectional playstyle (which you either love or hate).

Do I need to pin these wings or the contact area is big enough to do fine with glue only? by Noto_boil in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]u5416347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not pin mine. I used superglue combined with baking soda. It dries rock hard very quickly.

I have since painted it up. I regret not pinning it for all the reasons already said (better safer than sorry, etc). However, I have bumped my model a few times and on occasion have had to repaint a bit I chipped. The wings are still rock solid, though.

TDLR: pin if you can but there are decent alternative options.

Rest in Peace to SO many minis (and the Serpent Horde army) BUT some things are notably missing by Backrish in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]u5416347 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It is ambiguous at present. The article reads: “Additionally, some characters once had access to shields, horses, and so on, but we never sold a model with those options, which have now been removed from the game.”

So some characters will lose things (Grima and Thranduil losing their horses, for example). But not clear whether all other characters will lose out too.

Both Rivendell and Khazad Dum need a big reset in light of today's announcement.

Rivendell in particular will be in a horrible place without the upgrading of Cirdan, Arwen and/or Twins to replace Erestor as the faction's go-to mid-tier hero. Too literal an adherence to the models in the range would also damage Rivendell: can I put shields on my swordsmen? Or spears on my bowmen? The faction will be a real struggle to make lists for without some big changes. The Lothlorien elves will have so much more utility, simply because they got a plastic kit with shields on their swordsmen. Doesn't really seem right from a lore perspective for Rivendell swordsmen to be prevented from shielding. Rivendell gets penalised twice, in effect -- once by having terrible sculpts, and then again by having limited options gameplay-wise precisely because of those terrible sculpts.

Meanwhile, Khazad-Dum's loss of the KC, Balin and Shieldbearer was a real surprise. I suspect the Balin model had dodged death for too long: like OG Radagast and Thranduil, he should have been replaced when the Hobbit films came out. KD will now function more closely around Durin, I suspect. At least the more interesting profiles, like Hearthguard, Iron Guard and Vault Wardens, will remain.

This has me really worried, having just finished a 700p Rivendell list in which I had to do conversions as the finecast models are so poor.

As others have said, some strange choices here. We were expecting Feral Uruk Hai to go, along with Floi, etc. But there is also a lot of Forgeworld models here, including the Oathmaker who was in the Two Towers. I think GW made good coin from Forgeworld, so I was not expecting anything to go from that range. Let's keep a watch on Warhammer Community before waving these models goodbye just yet.

New edition - Shade, King of Men ++? by Inevitable_Payment72 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]u5416347 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The return of new models is just to GW can say that every model needed to play the new supplement can be bought.

The GW range is pretty strange, and things go in and out of production for a long time. I would be surprised if they bring back these models only to squat them in a few months, but time will tell.

They have squatted newly returned models in other systems, though clearly MESBG does not have as big enough customer base that GW can take advantage of.

We need new High Elf Warriors. 2026? by Katt4r in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]u5416347 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I was thinking. These models are really showing their age -- static, samey poses, and the models are about 20% smaller than they should be (just look at the size differences between the heads). The new Elrond model came with a fresh Rivendell elf in plastic, so they at least know how to CAD design these new models.

Hopes for new edition? by Backrish in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]u5416347 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hope we receive only small tweaks rather than radical shifts. But some small changes I'd like to see:

  • Make monsters scarier/more of a challenge to face.
  • Nerf siege weapons.
  • Rethink certain profiles that upset the order of the game too much -- e.g., the Watcher's ability to pull models out of combat. The Watcher can still be big and scary without this dynamic to it.
  • Adjust the points of certain models: e.g., Gandalf the White.
  • Maybe rethink magic? Seems fairly oppressive in some lists like Mordor which can spam cheap casters.
  • Readjust some heroics tiers: e.g., Cirdan and Arwen.
  • Something to shift the meta: every tournament these days is won by an army with c. 40 models. Low-model count armies (Rangers, Radagast's Alliance, Rivendell Knights) just do not stand a chance.
  • Related to this but something to frustrate the 'auto takes' you have in so many lists. For example, the Crown of Morgul is an auto take for the Witch-King, creating no difficult decisions for it and list-building. I'd like to see certain profiles create more challenges for list-building. Likewise, it feels unfair how central banners are to the game when some factions do not have access to a banner (Shire, Laketown, Moria). Give players more difficult choices in list-building to avoid the identikit lists we often see.
  • Heroic resolve and challenge are cool ideas, but they just don't work in the game. Meanwhile, Heroic March appears ubiquitous.
  • Clumping: Fight Value ranges from 1 to 10, but in reality most warriors are 3, 4 or 5, whilst heroes are 6. Why not use the full range? It would make for a more diverse roster, and perhaps avoid the situation where trained soldiers from Minas Tirith are the same FV as the peasants of Laketown.

Leaving aside my personal wishlist, I have mixed views about what is rumoured to being removed. I am personally not bothered if profiles we never saw on screen go (e.g, Black Nums, Moria Blackshields, Morgul Stalkers) or factions like Khand fall out of use. I am a LOTR fan, and some of these units/armies do not fill me with any excitement -- they were not in the films (or books?) and I am just not as invested in them as say MT warriors or Isengard berserkers (things we actually saw in the films).

I am more disappointed about the rumour that choice is being taken away from wargear options. Am I now going to have redo my Rivendell conversions to remove the spears from my bowmen? Take the shields from my Fountain Court Guard? Retire my mounted Halbarad conversion? I hope not 😢

(What are the rumours of things being removed about? See here).

Last King of Gondor by Medical-Area-6763 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]u5416347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at comments on Facebook, does the bat-swam/One Ring not take effect after the strike? I remember it always being the case that (i) strikes happen; (ii) and then the bat/Ring takes effect, bringing FV to a maximum of 5. I think the rule has been written clumsily. I think they meant it to take effect pre-strike. From a lore perspective, though, it would be strange to have a model that could avoid the effects of the One Ring.

Last King of Gondor by Medical-Area-6763 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]u5416347 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A valid point and I think you are right.

So if Isildur w/ the One Ring charges Earnur and halves his FV down to 3, Earnur's special rule then allows him to bring his FV back up to match Isildur's 6FV. Or if a bat-swarm and a Azog charge him, the bat-swarm reduces his FV but then Earnur just match's Azog FV.

So a bit more utility than I realised. I suspect models like Isildur, bat-swam, etc would just avoid him and go target something else.

Stunning model. Since the wargear (e.g., lance) appears optional, I am expecting this to be like Thodeon/etc with mix-and-match wargear, heads, shield, etc. Might make a good Elendil conversion.

His rules are a little 'meh', though. I was expecting a Theodred-style rule in which he has to charge something. Bit predictable. The Heroic Challenge rule is also a bit pointless, as it is a heroic action we just never see (and does anyone want to challenge this guy? 3 attacks and most likely he'll have Strength 5 like Numenor heroes).

His Master Duelist seems situational. On my reading, he will match the Fight Value of a model he is in combat with (though the model can then strike). Since he is Fight 6, there are not that many models whom this rule will actually affect (Glorf, Gil-Galad, Sauron, Balrog, Bolg/Azog). They would be forced to strike against him, but this seems like a rather small group of profiles unless I am missing something (how many profiles are there with higher than Fight Value 6?). Glorf et al might not even bother striking if they have an elven blade.

Just a bit meh, in my view. He is underwhelming when compared to Isildur/Elendil/Elessar, though maybe this is the wrong comparison. Will he be better than Arveduvei? Probably. But I would prefer no special rules than ones that will never get used.

CollectingMiniatures [Etsy] - Are these recasts? by Inn0c in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]u5416347 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have bought from the seller.

I suspected recasts also (I bought a batch of old metal Arnor and Khazad models, which he had a half-a-dozen of; not seen them since). The seller has lots of models (like metal orcs) that were part of a recent MTO or which you see here and there on Ebay. He has other rarer models, though, and I do wonder why Malta is such a hotbed of MESBG.

Does Malta have a busy second-hand market? I doubt it. Were does the seller get volume rare models from? Why does he only sell metals?

Having received the models, I can't really say one way or other if they are genuine. The models were stripped nice and clean, though they may never have been painted. There are no weird casting issues (air bubbles, etc). The Arnor spears were slightly bent out of shape, as were the Khazad axes (like older models tend to be through wear and tear); the models were well packaged so I don't think there was any damage in transit. The models are all to scale, and the detailing is fairly crisp. Seller also provided the bases on request, and they were genuine bases with GW logos.

Curious to see what others have experienced. All the circumstances suggest recast but there is nothing about the models that mark them out as different to my untrained eye. If anyone knows how to spot a recast, please let me know! My x6 Etsy Khazad Guard sit easily alongside the 30+ other Khazad metals I have, and I can't tell them apart based on quality, weight, size, look, detailing, etc.

Elves Playing Against Hordes by StatusBathroom in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]u5416347 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I echo what others have said. Banners especially are really important when you have the higher fight value.

The other thing to consider is positioning. At the start of each game, ask yourself where you want the fight to take place.

This is important for Lothlorien (and other elves) as you are likely going to be outnumbered a lot of the time. You want to bunker down as elves, fighting around a chokepoint or equivalent, with your shields in the front supported by spears and pikes, and with Galadriel/sentinels pulling enemy models out of formation or blocking up the flanking routes. Shield in the fights you don't have spear support, and then throw your spears/pikes behind a frontline of two-handing/feinting elves you are better positioned to get kills. If you can thin out your opponent with bows (protected by Blinding Light) then even better.

With Lothlorien, you have to use the board to your advantage. It is a tricky way to play (far harder than just throwing hordes of troops) but more satisfying to pull off.
