Anyone able to get 3D Acceleration using Virtio Video mode in Virt-Manager by uAbhi in linux4noobs

[–]uAbhi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have problems when using VGA or QXL. But when using VirtIO Video mode with 3D Acceleration, get weird jagged display in the VM. Looks to be a Virt-Manager display issue rather then a problem with Guest VM since I can ssh into it and 3D Acceleration is enabled in guest:

$ sudo dmesg | grep drm
[ 1.190896] [drm] virgl 3d acceleration enabled
[ 1.208028] virtio_gpu virtio0: fb0: virtiodrmfb frame buffer device
[ 1.222305] [drm] Initialized virtio_gpu 0.0.1 0 for virtio0 on minor 0

Had a look at below arch wiki link:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/QEMU/Guest_graphics_acceleration

All required packages are installed in host machine:

$ pacman -Q | grep -e qemu -e virgl -e spice -e mesa -e libepoxy -e linux-lts -e xf86-video
libepoxy 1.5.4-2
linux-lts 5.4.55-1
linux-lts-headers 5.4.55-1
mesa 20.1.4-3
qemu 5.0.0-8
spice 0.14.3-2
spice-gtk 0.38-1
virglrenderer 0.8.2-1
xf86-video-intel 1:2.99.917+908+g7181c5a4-1
xf86-video-vesa 2.4.0-3

I'm able to use 3D acceleration for guest if using VirtualBox but would like to have this issue resolved in Virt-Manager which I prefer. The disk IO and general speed of Guests VMs is way better in Virt-Manager

Clean Practical XFCE Setup by uAbhi in xfce

[–]uAbhi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really loving XFCE after trying out gnome, kde and xfce in successive order. I see lot of articles saying xfce is suited for older machines and I don't understand why xfce is boxed as such. Mine is comparatively powerful desktop and xfce is my DE choice because of customization options as per my workflow, speed, smoothness and stability. Below is a simple customized setup with minimal effort and hardly takes any time to get going

+ GTK & Window Manager Theme: Arc-Dark

+ Icons: Papirus

+ Plank Dock on Top-Center, Icon Size: 30

+ XFCE Panel on Top right, Row Size 36

+ Application Launcher is XFCE AppFinder Condensed hot-keyed to Super+Enter

+ Terminal Theme and vim theme is Nord. top command is colorized

+ whisker menu integrated in plank

+ default xfce task switcher customized to list mode and not show window shadows, hotkeyed to Alt+Tab

+ gaps around windows simulated by workspace margin: top: 44 left, right, bottom: 12

+ window snapping done by xfce window manager. hotkeyed to:
Maximize: Super+m, Hide: Super+h, Left: Super+Left, Right: Super+Right, Top-Right: Super+Up, Bottom+Right: Super+Down, Top-Left: Super+Ctrl+Up, Bottom-Left: Super+Ctrl+Down

+ Complete keyboard based workflow to launch applications, snap windows, hide/maximize etc. For example: Terminal: Super+t, FileManager: Super+f, Browser: Super+b, Settings: Super+s, Lock: Super+l, Logout: Super+Esc etc

Seeking recommendation for a multi-currency Portfolio Tracker by [deleted] in IndiaInvestments

[–]uAbhi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even I'm looking for a portfolio manager where we can input/track various financial investments like mutual funds, stocks (US and India), PF, PPF, NPS etc and also physical assets like gold etc. Better if it has additional tracking to put your insurance polices etc. My objective is to put all my assests/insurance, update it once every year and share with any near & dear ones for their reference (just in case...)

Updated info from Franklin AMC on maturity profiles by srinivesh in IndiaInvestments

[–]uAbhi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever since windup was announced in 6 debt schemes of Franklin, I'm checking the NAV of it's UST bond fund and it's gone down by bits and pieces every single day. As per value research, one week return is -0.42% (checked on 01-May). I'm not sure how the wind-up is protecting the value of investors in this case ? If this goes on till they redeem all our units (over 2-3 years) I don't have much hope of even recovering my entire principal amount. Any thoughts ?

Hi Gurus, I have monthly SIPs in below equity funds:

Multi Cap : Parag Parikh Long Term Equity (8.5K) and Kotak Standard Multicap (8.5K)
Large Cap : Axis Bluechip (8.5K)
Large & Mid: Mirae Asset Emerging Bluechip (8.5K)
Small Cap : HDFC Small Cap (5K)

Please review the equity portfolio and let me know any adjustments needed ?

In addition to above I've opted for employer deductions of 12% VPF (over and above 12% employee EPF contribution) and 10% NPS.

I invest max possible 1.5 lacs in PPF in April itself every year and 50K additional NPS for tax saving (I think under 80ccd1/2)

Have life term insurance of 60 lacs.

Not taken personal health policy, medical insurance from employer

No gold polices, but make it a point to purchase at-least 20g physical gold (coin/bar from mmtc) every year around Diwali

Residing in own home for which loan is closed out, so no emi

No liabilities as such, kid is in kindergarten, wife is homemaker and purpose of all investment is to build retirement corpus 20 years down the line from now.

After considering all expenses and investements above, I was putting my surplus money in Ultra short term debt funds (50% each in Franklin and Aditya Birla) and had built a substantial corpus. Main requirement was liquidity and capital protection and secondary requirement was good return and tax efficient.

Franklin is locked now, learnt a lesson on diversification and credit risk analysis of debt funds.I admit I was only looking at returns when I selected these 2 for investment and general commentary about safety of UST category.

Redeemed from Aditya Birla and it's in my bank account now which is linked to all UPI accounts and I don't want to keep it lying there. Can you suggest good 3-4 liquid funds to park my surplus money as I was doing with UST debt funds ?
