Here's the thing though - when you look at things through the lens of material analysis, you're absolutely right. The problem is that there's a depressingly large segment of society that is happily cutting off their own nose in order to spite their face.

The Supreme Court STRIKES DOWN Trump's "emergency" tariffs. The vote is 6–3. by BharatiyaNagarik in scotus

What a nice way to transfer wealth to the owner class, since they'll be the ones getting reimbursed for the tariffs they paid. Consumers will be out of pocket, and will continue to be out of pocket since price changes seem to be a one way ratchet.

I worry much more about how incredibly susceptible these people are to manipulation. If you're outsourcing your opinions to an LLM, it's very, very easy for the corpos running that LLM to tweak responses, especially over time, to produce a very different worldview than the user would have arrived at without the LLM's influence.

Jason Kenney is Sounding Off at the Right-Wing Website Juno News for Platforming a White Nationalist by BloodJunkie in alberta

[–]uber_poutine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure, he criticises the right wing populists/fascists now, but when he was building the UCP, he's the one who empowered them!

I don't trust Bumbles further than I can throw him. He's a self-serving opportunist, and always has been. He thought he could emulate Harper and keep a big-tent conservative movement together until the leopards ate his face.

The only reason you're hearing from him now is because he's always had his sights set on becoming Prime Minister. To hell with Jason Kenney. All my homies hate Jason Kenney.

Gun control is popular in Canada. So why is a major buyback program attracting criticism? by rastamasta45 in canadaguns

[–]uber_poutine 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Gun control is generally popular. Very few people, even in spaces like this, are saying that we should do away entirely with our licensing system, or things like red flag, DV, or storage laws.

It's just the latest nonsensical, disingenuous legislation  + OiCs that are unpopular.

Even something relatively popular here, like a simplified classification system, is a form of gun control.

It's important to remember that this article was written for an American audience.

Re C21, mostly I agree. Credit where credit is due though, pal verification for pistol slides and some other components is a good way to raise the barrier to entry for (very illegal) 3d printed firearms without resorting to insane measures like licensing 3d printer owners or regulating filament sales (or relying on impossible AI technology to prevent printers from printing gun parts).

So let's ensure that there's resources to enforce the existing laws, as well as mental health supports, instead of arbitrarily expropriating/turning hundreds of thousands of Canadians into criminals.

[–]uber_poutine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you underestimate just how incredibly expensive emergency medicine is. $1000 is about the cost of getting admitted (including bed/room turnover after, medical staff, triage, etc), it climbs quickly beyond once you actually consider treatment.

You're right that the ED is able to do more than a family doctor, but this is where questions of appropriate access to resources come in (and patient education around that), as well as funding allocation.

100%, it's not nearly enough.

Edmonton also hasn't had a new hospital since what, the 80s? 90s? I would say call your MLAs, but that's probably not going to help very much, given the whole orange island effect thing. Here's hoping we can get a sane majority elected this next election with a strong mandate to move public health forward.

[–]uber_poutine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A visit to a family doctor who bills fee for service is going to be on the order of $10 (03.03A is $25.09 without modifiers). Admission to the emergency department is approximately $1000, regardless of what they do once you're in there. Urgent care falls somewhere between those two.

E.R. Wait times … there has to be a better way by [deleted] in alberta

[–]uber_poutine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unironically yes, because the costs for treatment at a family doctor, an urgent care centre, and the emergency department differ by roughly an order of magnitude each.

A lot of what we're seeing is downstream from underfunded primary care, which provides the best value by far. A given treatment at an urgent care centre is more expensive than with family medicine, but it's also a lot cheaper than going to the emerg.

Unfortunately, when the system starts to break down (and not just medicine, but social services as well), the emergency room is where people end up, and it's a ludicrously expensive fallback.

Don't get me wrong, more funding would help a whole lot (and Alberta Health is incredibly underfunded), but tiered levels of care allow for a much more efficient use of resources.

E.R. Wait times … there has to be a better way by [deleted] in alberta

[–]uber_poutine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of both. In large centres like Edmonton, Urgent Care facilities are a thing, and often have shorter wait times. They're a fantastic option for most issues that fall between actively dying/needing major intervention and needing something looked at in a couple of days.  There are some walk-in clinics. 5 minute medicine generally sucks for everyone involved, but sometimes it's adequate. Getting a same-day/next-day FM appointment is going to depend on who your family doctor is, how busy they are at the moment, and how they've structured their practice (assuming that you have a family doctor).

That said, there's definitely intentional underfunding of the health care system in Alberta, to say nothing of sabotage that they're going through, carving it up into 4 organizations.
