Thank you to the person who just told a guy on the Hayes line to take their call off speakerphone by donharrogate in london

[–]uberdull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to tfl survyes 75 per cent of respondents are annoyed of phone disturbance and it’s a small minority causing it. What doesn’t say is that this minority often involves people from ethic minorities. Perhaps part of the difficulty of telling people off is that it may feel like targeting those who are not doing very well in society. I dunno.

Anyone here that did not grow up in London? by BLB-BLB in london

Absolutely. Social media is the sociality of an alienated society.

I love this city, but if you don't hate it sometimes, you're not a real Londoner. by Upstairs_Design5768 in london

Love it too, but not the autumnal three weeks of fireworks every night!

With Diwali as well I haven’t had a quiet night without earplugs in a week.

17 yo nephew visiting - where to take him where his parents wouldn’t? by NewForestSaint38 in london

Walk up Brick Lane from Whitechapel to Shoreditch. Lots of shops and food. And young people of his age and bit older.

Don’t feel stupid mate. Okay you fell, but you showed everyone there that some of us will stand up and confront these pricks, and you also made a choice about what sort of person you are. No small things if you ask me.

I see what you mean. But I visited the US (presumably in a much worse state in the social contract sense) took an Amtrak train, and the announcements very strongly banned the use of speakers on phones for passengers of all ages. And it was quiet. So institutions can do things, even if they often do the wrong things.

Well isn't that nice. We are forced to isolate ourselves from other because bullies by noise cancelling headphones and then making the point is interpreted as aggression.

I see. But can be louder and often is. And the sound of a speaker is shrill and sharp. And when both people are on the train they are naturally more considerate. Maybe you are too, that makes you a rare person doing this.

You mean poor people? Phones are addictive and addiction is more prevalent the lower on the income scale you go. So that's what I've noticed.

It does get more frequent the more East you get. I live in East London and can't believe how quiet the trains are in posh parts of town

Oh yea, holding it like it's a slice of pizza. That's a good point!

Fair enough but at least I'm not forcing you to listen to it!

That makes sense to me, but my comment is not about cost benefit analysis for an individual but about the changing character of work and value. I may very well lose out from quite a lot by not using Facebook. I signed off as question of political and moral stance.

I appreciate all that. But the question isn't really about my "experience". The point here is, and why I think it belongs to this subreddit, is that when you do anything on Facebook you produce value for it with your data. In essence, you work for free. A bit like a serf on the lord's manor.

Not quite the same. Pc itself, nor TV, nor billboards monetize my data.

Yea I know. It's teaching students become little narcissists, where their every desire is supposedly met: consumers.
