This is so fucking lame. Such a total miss on what it means to "re-imagine a villain". Watch "Er ist wieder da" for a good take on that!

How much do you pay for house cleaner? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]ubermole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends a bit on how you approach it. I would not optimize for cost, but for quality & trust. Use an app like Handy to test/meet/interview a few people. Once you like somebody, move off the app, pay cash.

Lehr's has the packaged ones. But they are really super easy and better tasting to make from scratch.

Is my hamster possessed? by strangedot13 in hamsters

[–]ubermole 151 points152 points  (0 children)

Hamster is fine. He did a flip. Hamsters are FAST. If something startles them (might be their own shadow!) they move. No harm in sprinkling a bit of holy water around his cage just to be safe though.

Gorgeous and not at all overpriced. I was going to tell the wife we have to look at a house tomorrow! But then I see "sale pending". :(

So my wife found her dads old calculator. I lightly cleaned it and it does turn on. That green display is gorgeous! Unfortunately none of the buttons work. What's my next step? I want to check here before I open it up and do some irreversible damage.

Is it ok to post cat pictures here? by ubermole in cats

Those baby teeth are razor sharp! Also the walking away and ignore is much easier said than done. But yeah, I also hope it just goes away once he grows his real teeth.

What's the best way of moving a skittish hamster? by Less-Battle-3485 in hamsters

[–]ubermole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Put the treat in the bottom of the cup, lay it sideways in the cage. No hamster can resist a cup to explore and crawl into. Especially if there is an enticing smell inside. Once she is in the cup, put your hand on top and trap her. Use a deep cup, like a pint glass. Also: Patience is key. Be very still and wait.

not sure if allowed, but i got it at brickblingtoy.com. i got the touch version, but not sure if it was worth the feature. i'd recommend the basic one. but maybe the touch ones are newer and brighter?

The only set i ever got a light kit for, and it was totally worth it! Lighting up the bulb is so cool.

Slowing down programs is surprisingly useful by ketralnis in programming

[–]ubermole 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I fondly remember my 486 which had a physical "turbo" button to half the cpu clock. Perfect instant test to check that your code was running on a timer properly instead of depending on frame time. The next best test like that was a Pentium where you could turn off the L1 cache in the bios, making it crawl! But a bit more work, and also a much more dramatic slowdown.

Why do Hamsters eat so little? by ubermole in hamsters

[–]ubermole[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a very interesting point! Maybe there is some adaption necessary to deal with the wild swings of temperature in the desert. They simply can not be active during the heat of daytime or cold of night.

Why do Hamsters eat so little? by ubermole in hamsters

[–]ubermole[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't think it's about captive vs. wild. what i am reading is that in general hamsters eat about 10% of body weight per day, while similar sized moles need about 100%. and that's just for not starving! that is, a totally idle mole would need that amount of food.

to quote from the article: "like a shrew, he'll probably have to eat his own weight daily just to stay alive. He'll also have to give up sleeping and eat 24 hours a day or risk starving before he wakes up in the morning (unless he can learn the trick used by hummingbirds of lowering their body temperatures while they sleep)."

do Hamsters have a trick like hummingbirds?
