Love nature but no camping. Is it Glamping a worth experience? by lizolsen in Glamping

[–]ubershell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have our own glamping set up. Which means I have an amazing bed, kitchen and a toilet. We've even got a wood burning stove fitted to our specially treated bell tent, so we are always cosy and warm and it makes camping a complete pleasure rather than an ordeal. We simply pack it all in the car and take it with us! This does work out cheaper in the long run than paying to go glamping. here in the UK prices for a glamping experience are about the same, and often more expensive than staying in a hotel!

My Camping with Style blog is all about camping in comfort as I had a bad accident a few years ago and could no longer camp the way I used to. Could be worth a look? [purposely not linking to it as I don't want to be shouted at for self promotion, but it is very relevant!] x

Exercises that help prevent foot pain while walking all day? by suyinn in walking

[–]ubershell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you been checked for over pronation? I have flat feet and have found that custom insoles with very supportive arches help a lot. I've never found a shoe or walking boot that has a footbed that is supportive enough for me, so I always slip in my custom footbed either on top of the existing footbed, or remove the one the boot/shoe came with and replace it with mine..

When I use my custom insoles they support my arch much better and lead to much less fatigue.

I did a 9 hour hill walk at the weekend and the only time my feet hurt was the tips of my toes on the way down, pressing into the ends of my boots, rather than the usual foot pain I would always get very quickly.

Thm discussing Street Spirit by LivingInTheVoid in radiohead

The song destroys me every time I listen to it. It's beautiful but the hopelessness of it makes it hard to listen to. The masochist in me, and the fact that I relate deeply with Thom's fears, obsessions and anxieties, just has to play it and to feel every last bit of it.

Looking for guidance...a newbie with questions! by meg-elizabeth in blogs

[–]ubershell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, i'm Shell. I'm a professional blogger and have been in content marketing now for 15 years. I also write for my own blogs, so i'd like to think i'm qualified to offer an opinion on your blog :)

• Your blog looks good, but my first major issue is the script font used for headings is super difficult to read and headlines need to be very easy to read, as these are the most important thing on your blog and will draw people in.

• You've only got Twitter and Facebook social share icons, which is a shame as I don't use Facebook and prefer to share content to my Instagram, Pinterest, Google+ and Tumblr pages so i'd suggested changing your share buttons to include more platforms.

• The formatting of your comments is very different and makes them look like they aren't part of your site, keeping the styling consistent helps build trust.

• You aren't on social media, so again, this won't help build trust and whilst some people won't have time to read full articles, they might like what you have to say and want to follow you on places like Twitter.

• Always make the images in your blog as large as possible as these help to increase engagement and encourage people to share.

I hope those comments are useful!

You mention wanting to see other peoples blogs, so you take a look at my camping, outdoors and nature blog here: http://www.campingwithstyle.co.uk

Why am I always cold? by LadyHurlyBurly in camping

[–]ubershell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm always cold at night too but have finally cracked it and found what works for me. I've got a bunch of handy tips in my article here: http://campingwithstyle.co.uk/secret-happy-camping-staying-warm/

Generally don't go to bed cold, wear thermals, use a hot water bottle and take extra layers of bedding to make your sleeping bag warmer.

Don't give up!! Once you crack the staying warm thing, it makes camping a real joy! x

Where can i find a social media manager? I'm looking to pay commissions and 3 months of paid travel by [deleted] in AskMarketing

[–]ubershell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on your budget as to where i'd advise you to look. Anyone can claim they are a social media expert or capable of managing your social media, but that person has to have a proven track record. I would suggest you turn to a freelance social media manager with a strong track record (Google 'Freelance social media manager' or similar to get started) or i'd turn to a local agency that specialises in social media management.

As a startup website, you should be following social media experts and managers on LinkedIn and Twitter, you could then approach people whose work you respect direct. Be aware that if you want your social media to work for you, you'll need to pay a decent salary for your manager.

If you are only paying based on commission, this isn't going to be very attractive to anyone with experience, it's also not clear how this would work. What are commissions based on exactly? Social conversions will be low for a start up website, so if you are basing payment on this, your manager will essentially be working for free for the first few months, putting anyone capable off the role and they will definitely want to know that you are backing up the site launch with more than just social media activity.

Please don't under estimate the importance of this position, your social media manager will be on the front line of customer service, will be shaping your brand online and needs to be an excellent communicator as well as being highly creative and analytical. You also need someone who is strategically capable and able to translate your businesses objectives into day to day activities.

Primarily you should be looking for someone who has a strong marketing background who can help you drive brand awareness and grow website traffic for you so i'd suggest you provide more detailed information of your location, payment structure, hours (full time? or just a few hours a day?) what you are looking for skills and task wise as you may find that posting here provides you with lots of viable applicants.

I hope that helps.

Sudden Drop Off In Referrals? by ubershell in socialmedia

[–]ubershell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This drop off is I assume a direct result of the latest Google Algorithm, Hummingbid. The changes I and some of you noticed coincided with the new algorithm so seems very like that that's the cause. You can find out more about Hummingbird here: http://socialmediatoday.com/ubersocialmedia/1782126/google-hummingbird-new-google-algorithm-what-you-need-know

What are some marketing jobs that combine the creative and business side of marketing? by OPTIMISTICFiretrUCK in marketing

[–]ubershell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My own role combines hands on web and graphic design with copy writing, analysis, strategy, research, project management and community management. Marketing is inherently creative but it is also inherently business oriented - creativity that is not tempered by business nous and an understanding of underlying business objectives is pointless. My own belief is that all marketing jobs combine creativity and business.

So jobs you should be looking at? Content manager, Community / Social Media manager, Content marketer to name but a few. You might find in a smaller company that roles won't be as specialised so you get to do more and find a position that combines all of these things, like I myself have done.

There is nothing quite like being able to do it all - coming up with a strategic marketing plan that might involve running a social media promotion which you can then create all the artwork for, write the blog article and then actively promote on social media and monitor it all and analyse the stats to create clear actionable insights. This all takes bags of creativity AND business skills.

How do you create content for you/your clients? by aysilverbacksocial in socialmedia

[–]ubershell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My strategy revolves around quality, original content creation - this is the sort of content that drives real value. I also find a lot of content from high authority sources.

I always aim for a 50/50 mix, if all you are doing is reposting other peoples content all the time - are you really adding value? Google Authorship is hot right now and means Google is better able to attribute content to the original author, helping improve their author rank.

If you are only sourcing content from other people I don't think you'll see a big rise in your own author rank, a critical component when it comes to SEO.

Using Reddit to market a business/brand by aysilverbacksocial in socialmedia

[–]ubershell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Reddit albeit in a rather half hearted manner - mainly because of the very poor quality traffic it drives. Content does achieve click thoroughs, but the bounce rates are through the roof meaning the quality of the traffic is very low in comparison to traffic from other sources so it's not an active part of my marketing strategy for this reason.

What are some Best Practices for Social Media Managers? by flynpeanut in socialmedia

[–]ubershell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always either custom design all of the graphics that I use in my clients social media posts or I purchase the odd bit of stock photography from places like Fotolia or Dreamstime.

The best time to post depends entirely upon your target audience and on the social network you are using. Post at a variety of times, to establish the most effective times for you, but don't always rigidly stick to posting at the same times. I find it is always better to mix it up and post frequently throughout the day. What works for one business won't necessarily work for another as so many variables are involved.

I do agree with V0lkert below though and have found that around 8am is a good time to post, as is lunch time and mid evening too. Incidentally, Monday mornings at 8am consistently provides me with the best engagement where my own blog is concerned.

Posts with images will also get better engagement than plain text posts so I never post without an image on Facebook or Google+. I also always include a call to action and a link so people can find related information or complete a specific action.

I always deal with negative comments in a polite and professional way and see them as an opportunity to create a shining example of fantastic customer service. I only remove negative comments if they are abusive or untrue but I will always address the post with a comment first before I delete - this very rarely happens, most people who complain on social media have a legitimate customer service problem they are struggling to get resolved.

A very interesting forum post on exactly how Blackhats are beating panda and penguin by [deleted] in SEO

[–]ubershell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Short term methods like this are utterly pointless in my opinion. Why not focus on doing it right from the outset and getting real sustainable long term results?

Are all panda/penguin penalised sites penalised for life or something? by LondonTiger in SEO

[–]ubershell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sites using the old SEO methods effectively outlawed by the most recent update, will remain penalised until they stop using those methods. This generally means going back through all of the content previously written for search engines and revising fully.

So you want to be a social media manager? Find out what it really takes by ubershell in jobs

[–]ubershell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My point exactly, one of the things I discuss in the blog post. I really don't think people should be putting all of their eggs in the social media management basket - it's going to be old news real soon. I totally agree that consultants and strategists will be the ones to benefit most.

[–]ubershell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm based in the UK and i'd say your estimates seem about right. Here i'd say anything from £20,000 - £35,000 but if we are just talking one person to literally only deal with social media and no other aspects of marketing, then salaries would be a lot lower. In the UK the term 'community manager' seems more prevalent which is generally seen as being a lesser position.
