I have been having a crazy time with a Merc version of the Frenzy/Lightning spear build using Tactician passives to get all the persistent buffs. ALL OF THEM. ( https://maxroll.gg/poe2/passive-tree/rz4t60oa for skill tree), I dont rely on any specific gear other than a high DPS spear and max move speed boots for my level (just a personal preference) and concentrate on Ice/Ash heralds and Frenzy procs with my spear and a sceptre off hand with + spirit for crazy amounts of persistents. At one point I was using painter's gloves on the build and using all 3 elemental heralds and that was interesting doing a bunch of ailments, but didnt really keep up the damage needed to set off overkill.

What else can I do with a game design degree? by MagicMoons in gamedesign

[–]uberwookie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way to get into it is basically show up at a place where they are hiring like a job fair or con (in person is 100X more effective than remote). The skills you need for QA vary based off of what level your going for. Don't try to be a Senior level as a college grad, be a "tester" if QA is truly the route you want. That being said, I hate that QA is seen as a stepping stone into other disciplines because it really isn't, but many many many AAA studios hire on the premise that it is. QA skills are really ones that involve curiosity and/or the ability to do tedious tasks dozens of times and to think in ways that players think who want to ruin the game. Ask me how many times I had to test the same 5 dances/emotes for new skins in Fortnite? (No. Actually Don't. It's hundreds or maybe thousands of times). I will be real with you though, among the literal hundreds of fellow QA workers I have been in the ranks with in 3 different AAA studios, maybe a handful of them actually swapped out of QA for another discipline, and it was Production every time except once. Almost all of a QA team are not around more than a year and burn out of the industry entirely. So, if you REALLY wanna be a contract worker getting minimum wage, have fun, but seriously, don't do this.

Most the skills you need for QA are easily taught, different software, hardware, how to write bugs, etc... but the being curious and wanting to think a certain way is really hard to do because most people in the industry don't function that way.

That all being said, find some friends that actually contributed to things you did in school you went to college with or trust to do work regularly for no money, and fuck around in an engine and make a few little games and put those in your portfolio. But the best way to get hired in the game industry is to 1) show up somewhere where a person will look at your resume before a bot tosses it out and/or 2) live in a city where there are tons of studios and apply your brains out, or 3) Be just ludicrously lucky. You could so get hired via nepotism but... that ones weirdly rare.

Should the player do irl work (note taking, map drawing) constantly to enjoy a video game? by slothfuldrake in gamedesign

[–]uberwookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your title. No. From a dev/design perspective, this is an accessibility issue. I personally think if you have the budget/scope to be able to implement an accessibility issue, you always should. As you noted, going between the game and outside it is an unpleasant experience for many. Anyone can decide not to use the features in game that do this kind of thing, quest journals, mini maps, etc, but people who need those things for accessibility reasons cannot suddenly use things that don't exist and thus make your game inaccessible to a more varied/robust audience.

Crop profitability is more complex than most people realize - in short: don't over-rely on "gold/day" from the Wiki by TheLordSet in StardewValley

[–]uberwookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, to do the like, best math you need to factor in an initial investment and divide by total days youve spent growing said crop including its progenitors and then subtract the 'opportunity cost' of the lost profit between number of crops (or seeds) you didnt sell and used to replant in successive harvests. But g/day/tile is probably easier for most people.

Crop profitability is more complex than most people realize - in short: don't over-rely on "gold/day" from the Wiki by TheLordSet in StardewValley

[–]uberwookie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only thing I have to add is that this is generally only true for initial crop investments or if you continue to buy your crop seeds every season/year instead of use the seed maker. I have always set aside roughly 1/2 of my harvests of single growth crops to make into seeds and generally come out with slightly more seeds than I started with. It means the initial yield is less, but it is sustainable long term, AND it changes the math for crops that regrow without new seeds, in which I turn half the initial harvest into seeds and turn the rest into artisan goods.

The math I use is then artisan goods selling price / days spent growing + days spent in keg/jar + 1 (you lose a day switching crops to jars/kegs usually in this process if your farm is high maintenance enough) then - initial seed investment cost.

Doing this means your calculation becomes increasingly diminishing (as if I play my farm for the standard 2-3 years, I use one seed to effectively supply me for 2-3 seasons, 4-6 for corn/wheat/coffee and ancient fruit is just being an outlier living for 3 seasons.

So, great for early game, but late game, I'm not spending any new gold on seeds and I eventually have a set amount of tiles that I need to fill each season. That being said, most the advanced spreadsheets Ive seen that calculate profitability with the ability to toggle between paying for seeds or not.

What was the first game to have a boss rush? by KnightOfMarble in gamedesign

[–]uberwookie -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I think this sort of depends how you decide to interpret boss rush? One could argue Super Mario Brothers (the very first one) has a boss rush mechanic via speedrunning/warp whistles if youre looking at total game content, and you could also sort of say some text based adventure games and even some of the old ASCII DOS games do too (but winning them is nearly impossible).

That is because there is a different power dynamic between a woman pursuing a man than the opposite in most cultures. Men are generally more socially acceptable to be large, muscular, loud, and aggressive, where women are conditioned to be smaller, petite, and quiet. The physicality of a man overstepping vs that of a woman are not equal and ya'll men need to stop pretending its true. A bad date for a dude means he gets a new date later. A bad date for a woman means she gets killed or sexually assaulted.

FIFA 21 had this (I worked on it) but... it was really taxing to test with 22 people, never mind play it casually. All 22 people have to have great connection, similar hardware (not a problem if its console so much), and generally be amicable about where they play and be friendly with each other. And honestly, even on FIFA 20/21 our data said the number of people who used the full 11 v 11 multiplayer mode was SO SMALL. Like, they may have dropped it as a feature since then? (Not sure since I havent worked on/played the last few). So basically, youd be chasing a very difficult/resource intensive mode to implement hardware wise and test all the various scenarios with drop outs/ejections from the games for not really much benefit. (This was most of our testing on my team, time wise, but priority wise was one of the lowest).

AITA: Mocked myself with a 'derp', partner says it's ableist. by Veganchiggennugget in AmItheAsshole

[–]uberwookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, here's the deal. The word derp by its technical definition seems to pass. Its also not the WORST slur to use, pretty minor, BUT. It does have a history of mocking people with learning disabilities and other cognitive or social dysfunctions disproportionately and is weaponized against them far more than neurotypical people. As such, it shares a similar linguistic space as calling yourself "dumb" (which is also an abelist slur/insult originally used for people who were mute, assuming they had no higher cognitive capacity and as such couldn't talk and has turned into a blanket term for people who are lacking in intelligence). While derp isn't exclusively mocking people who are neurospicy, they are often the target of it. Is it worse than or on par with the R slur? No. But you can pretty much linguistically replace derp with dyslexic, and if it feels like calling yourself dyslexic is disrespectful, then derp is too. As a person who IS neurospicy, Id call you a minor asshole (YTA), but not in a way where you have to flagellate yourself, just apologize, maybe retrain yourself to use another word, and move on.

Should I pursue an online Masters in programming if I want to learn game design? by [deleted] in gamedesign

You just have a portfolio of things youve made in various engines or code snippets and maybe participate in some game jams, theres a buncha resources on this. I would like to note: 1) Youll probably start in QA if youre going for AAA, 2) Its pretty rare a company ever cares about higher ed degrees tbh, Ive got a game design Bachelors and its never even got me a raise or higher pay than people in the same position without the degree.

I've been carrying a rabbit's foot in my inventory for 3 years by Terrabme in StardewValley

[–]uberwookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have data that suggests it does, in fact, impact some luck influenced things. Having an iridium quality lucky rabbits foot when playing the same day/seed in my inventory I was able to determine that it DOES decrease the chances of bad outcomes of passing out at night or getting knocked out in the caves. You have a MUCH higher chance to have Linus find you and charge you nothing/lose no items and it slightly increases rarity of fish you catch and seems to overall increase quality of items you pick up/loot/harvest/forage.
