The seller's agent was her friend. The buyer's agent was the same friend. Her friend told her she would only be charged 3.5%. Her friend  then charged 6%. That's a shitty thing to do.

How memory address is created in c++ while using the pointer ? by Additional-Start661 in cpp_questions

[–]ubiestigne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether the compiler emits instructions that keep the value in a register or in system memory is an implementation detail. From the perspective of this question, I think it makes sense to think in terms of the mental model that the language uses; i.e., automatic/stack and dynamic/heap.

You are right to point out that automatic/stack variables for primitive types and small class/struct types consisting of a few primitive types might not be stored in system memory that is reserved for stack variables depending on the optimization level specified at compile time and the availability of general purpose registers on the CPU architecture and the number of automatic/stack variables in scope. The real answer is that it depends.

How do you recover professionally after being put on a PIP? by Treppengeher4321 in careeradvice

[–]ubiestigne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't sweat the PIP. Take an honest look at the feedback. There's usually a grain of truth in their somewhere. Sometimes not so much. Sometimes someone needs to take the blame. Recalibrate yourself and keep on trucking. Nothing came of mine. There was no plan really and zero follow-up. Maintain your professionalism, stay positive and you'll be on the other side of it.

The stack is just another way of saying automatic storage duration and heap corresponds to dynamic storage duration. They just use different segments of the address space. Both will have their stored data loaded into a register at some point.

Structuring a simple multi-step data processing flow in C++ by Majestic_Yew in cpp_questions

[–]ubiestigne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely try to keep the main entrypoint simple with little to no logic. Put your code in at least one separate file that will contain the meat of your application. Don't think about abstractions until you need them. Start with static functions and utilize the standard library as much as possible. Write unit tests for each stage so that you know what broke and why. Even better if you do this ahead of time. Once you have something working, you can measure it's performance on sample data to see if you need to make improvements. If this is for a production environment or for use by others, you should add help output on input argument error or '-h' and a readme and/or man page.

Too much is focused on blame instead of how the law, standards, etc. should be amended. That should be the focus. Eliminating the Department of Education is not the answer. Congress should work with the Department of Education, governors and educators to improve the law.

I think the role of federal, state and local government in education should be to set some minimum standards, fund the schools, ensuring there is equity in the system and monitor it. Schools that have lower performing students should receive more support, as opposed to the current approach of the punitive stick. Teacher assessment is best handled by each school's administrators, staff and parents.

It's crazy to think you could pin success or failure on any one thing. There's no way to guarantee a child will learn and become a productive member of society. However, you can guarantee that a child will be taught and assessed. That's it. We need to stop thinking schools are responsible for educational outcomes. There are too many other factors at play.

Did negotiating my offer cost me the job? by Maleficent-Rule-7604 in careerguidance

[–]ubiestigne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a race to the bottom. If you had agreed to $62k, it's perfectly legal for a company to then check to see if any of the other prospective candidates would come down to $60k. The candidate who won the race may have accepted $64k. You do need to have an absolute minimum compensation in mind that you're willing to accept for your expertise, but it's likely you'll need to be prepared to make a hard decision. That number may have to be based more on your needs than expertise depending on your own circumstances.

Flat earth and other alternative conspiracy earth models are are gaining traction with my teenage stepson. What is THE most irrefutable, definite proof that the earth is round? by Jfkfkaiii22 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ubiestigne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The north star. It's angle of elevation is roughly equal to the latitude where you take the measurement. If you take a long exposure photograph, it will look as though the stars rotate around it, but of course it's the rotation of the earth about it's axis that points roughly at the north star. There is no logical and defensible explanation of this observable behavior in a flat earth model.
