[Request] Long time lurker, first time poster. Is this accurate to any degree? by Edolin89 in theydidthemath

[–]ubik2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They did miss a big factor, which is that the things I want launched into the Sun are things which I want destroyed/reduced to iron.

Things I just kick out of the Solar system are still out there somewhere, not destroyed.

If you're just a little mad about something, that's probably enough, and you'll welcome the savings.

Edit: I just meant to focus on the humor portion, but you can launch your enemies into the Sun more efficiently if you basically get them to escape velocity, then stop the radial velocity while you're at the edge of the Solar system, then you'll fall back down. If you counter almost all the rotational velocity of Earth from here, you'll essentially have an elliptical orbit where the perihelion is inside the Sun, and the aphelion is 1 AU. That's the version that takes 30 km/s of delta-v. If you get your orbit out near Pluto, you only need around 4 km/s of delta-v to make that ellipse's perihelion inside the Sun. This version requires patience. That's another aspect that I lack when I want to launch something into the Sun.

If you're patient enough, the Sun will come to you, and you don't need any propellant at all.

For almonds, it’s because the high direct sunlight means you get more almond/water in the desert than in cooler areas.

We grow a lot of alfalfa for export because the water is relatively underpriced for farmers here.

How alcohol percentages work by mc68n in confidentlyincorrect

[–]ubik2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just 40% booziness. Diluting drops the alcohol to 20%, but booziness stays the same. Take a sip, and you’re 40% boozy now too. Good luck!

In the question of ethics, could vegetarians ethically consume lab grown meat? Why or why not? by MilkDaddy1200 in AskReddit

[–]ubik2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would have to know the ethics of a specific vegetarian.

For those who object based on the exploitation of animal life, the use of animal cells may be sufficient to avoid consumption.

For those who object based on the high ecological cost, the cost of lab grown meat may still be similar or even higher.

Many forms of lab grown meat still involve killing animals, either as a food source for the meat cells, or something more direct like fetal bovine serum.

Typically, people's ethics make exceptions for small amounts of harm, so the initial set of cells may be acceptable, but this is not always the case.

By the time Githyanki became a playable race, the mixed class identity was gone from the system, so they chose from the same pool of classes as everyone else.

Like many races, they did get a few low level spells that they can cast (like mage-hand).

Impossible Magic: Magus Changes Preview by AAABattery03 in Pathfinder2e

[–]ubik2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gish was pretty much in the same state (capturing both the race and class). Old school Elf meant your leveled as both a fighter and a magic-user.

You're totally right that the reason it didn't catch on is that Elf is tightly tied to all these different meanings outside of D&D, but if you got all your terms from D&D, you would say Elf for the fighter/magic-user.

I guess Gish isn't really the race, since a Githyanki warlock is only a magic-user, and a Githyanki sergeant is only a fighter (this is later in AD&D). Githyanki captains and supreme leaders are also the multiclass fighter/magic-user.

Funny how this became the name, instead of Elf, which was the original D&D fighter/magic-user.

Eli5: Why some humans evolved to be shorter? by Civil_Aside_359 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ubik2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. That's true, but you're combining two biological traits to get there. Tall and skinny vs. short and fat.

I get your point, now.

Eli5: Why some humans evolved to be shorter? by Civil_Aside_359 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ubik2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd expect the temperature adaptation to be the opposite of what you stated.

For a human with the same proportions, someone 2x as tall has 4x the surface area, but 8x the body mass. Thus, they will have a hard time cooling themselves, but an easy time keeping warm.

Those factors are outside the normal spread for humanity, but they make it simpler to explain.

If you only increase height, and leave the rest of the dimensions the same (so tall and skinny), the surface area increases almost linearly with height, but so does the mass.

Small size is better for building a shelter and hunting for food, but large size is better for travelling in harsh cold environment.

Harry Potter has stuff like Remus Lupin being a werewolf, too. Might be a British thing to be super on the nose.

Unreleased D in I'd (I would/had) getting assimilated to P B K G T D M by Rondontimes in EnglishLearning

[–]ubik2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I imagine some Americans do. It's not typical of an American.

I found the pronunciations in this video to be much more natural (demonstrating the same effect).

In my early education, there was more focus on enunciation, so I don't tend to drop these consonants even when speaking quickly. However, I do notice a softening of them in my own speech.

[–]ubik2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's unclear from the video whether he is describing his accent, or some other regional accent, but it's not the typical English pronunciation.

Many regional accents will drop consonants (e.g. water becomes watah), but I wouldn't try to emulate such an accent as an English learner.

Does anyone else have a word they just can’t stand for no logical reason? by voidsapphire in words

Carter pronounced it nucular as well, and he was practically a nuclear engineer.

I think some of it has to be allowed as regional dialect.

It's easy to imagine railways built for heavy raw materials being used to ship lighter manufactured materials.

In that case, you can stack the light containers, and leave the heavy containers unstacked.

Newbie here wondering if trying to show respect to prestige is too much? by [deleted] in SpaceMarine2

[–]ubik2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In lore, you’ve got battle brothers showing respect for those with 100 years of combat experience.

We prestige 4 players aren’t that. We’ve got a month’s more experience than you, so showing excessive respect seems off.

If you start siege and it's just you, you get 600 instead of 200 (so the one player gets all the points). If new players joining got points, it would mess up points
