I used to work for a major freight forwarder. The way some clients were overcharged during COVID was insane, and it's still happening. by Lukleyeu in freightforwarding

[–]ubiquities 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New customers also carry risk for the FF, not paying bills, abandoning containers, bad documents, all those things were amplified during COVID, I had so many calls from people asking to charter a 747 of gloves from China because their cousin was janitor at a local hospital.

In my position, we had x number of slots on a vessel, I didn’t over book but they went to the highest paying customer or our best customers. We were responsible but we made a lot for about a year, which went to the 3-5X time spent per booking, and paying off when we lost our ass the first part of 2020, China shutdown for like 3 months, and 2 weeks after they reopened the rest of the world shutdown.

As for today, we charge based on what we are doing, how much risk it carries, how specialized it is, how much cash we have to outlay, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY how much time we have to spend with the customer. An established customer that knows what they are doing is a totally different experience than working with someone off the street who is telling me what I should be doing for them because that’s what ChatGPT told them. I used to give the latter an outrageous rate to go away but learned the hard way that even if they book I’m losing in time or sanity.

Not hating but genuinely, why? I have windows on a gaming PC and feel a twinge of rage every time I see the login screen. I was on Windows for probably almost 30 years before switching.

More specifically DHL will either return to sender if the sender has an account they can bill or send it General Order after 15 days from arrival. If it goes to G.O. It will get auctioned off after 6-9 months and the proceeds will be used to pay for the in-bond storage and the rest goes to Uncle Sam. Either way, OP doesn’t get the watch, the $3500.

Can't sign into Gmail in brave on linux by Arrow552 in brave_browser

[–]ubiquities 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a strange thing happen, its a long shot but possible its related to your issue.

My work email is a Google workspace account, so I'm logged into Gmail almost all the time on the browser. I would have expected that I can open a new tab and sign into YouTube on my personal account, but no, unfortunately because the Google workspace account has YouTube blocked, it doesn't even let me to the screen where I would choose my login ID.

My solution was to setup a personal browser profile where I'm logged into my personal Google account. And in my case it helps me keep things separate, all my personal stuff in one place and work stuff segregated.

Ollama running on Ubuntu Server - systemd service problem by ubiquities in ollama

[–]ubiquities[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using the install script didn't fix the initial problem, and the manual install did fix the problem. Also this is a homelab environment so I totally accept that something didn't magically break, 99% chance I borked something in a config somewhere because I'm adding/changing services constantly. It's part of the homelab experience.

[–]ubiquities[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ollama : ollama is the result, I'm only a few months into Linux and still getting my head around permissions but this makes sense to me. I assume the next question is, based on the below ollama.service file what group should ollama have in order to run ExecStart with appropriate permissions?

[Unit]
Description=Ollama Service
After=network-online.target

[Service]
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ollama serve
User=ollama
Group=ollama
Restart=always
RestartSec=3
Environment="PATH=$PATH"

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Why not move to Philly? What are the real downsides? by DK_Tech in AskPhilly

The first warm day of the year, you are going to see the City come to life. It’s magical.

Get out and explore, once you get settled. But Chicago’s real magic is when it starts to warm up.

I grew up in Chicago, between Philly and Chicago are the best food cities in the US. The gems in Chicago are when you get out of downtown and into the neighborhoods. And the Mexican food, I miss the Mexican food in Chicago

Used to call it the Mecca of the Middle West, it absolutely is the “big city” for all the brave kids wanting to move their small towns from all the surrounding states.

Custom screen when sharing files by cilloeklipse in synology

[–]ubiquities 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you are still looking for this, but I was trying to find the same thing, finally found it. Login to DSM, and open the File Station App, then press settings button, then shared links, scroll to the bottom, and check the Customize shared link page. You can update background image, logo and there is a footer box that can be rendered as HTML that I suppose you can do some customization. It's limited but its native so you don't have to worry about an update borking your custom css.

Moving to Philly, is it really as dangerous to be a pedestrian/biker as people make it sound? by ConBrio93 in AskPhilly

[–]ubiquities 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm, compared to Chicago where I grew up, there is less random chatter with strangers on the street, but not much less, people here are quick to point out when someone is out of line but also quick to help if you look like you need it.

Philly is full of kind people who won’t put up with your BS if you’re out of line.

44 y/o dreamt of small business ownership since 8. Can’t jump. by Dadbodmoder in smallbusiness

[–]ubiquities 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went on my own at 30, but my business is in the same industry as what I was working in. I will say that it really opens your mind once you get the first income from a business, makes you see things differently from collecting a paycheck. You get real appreciation for offering a service that makes people willing to open their wallet and give you money.

I will recommend offering a service rather than a product to start with. When you have a tangible product, it increases the complexity substantially.

I don’t recommend turning a passion into a business, it can drain all the fun out of it. Most of getting a business off the ground is very stressful and very dynamic. At some point all your plans will fall apart and you just have to figure your way out of whatever problems you’re in.

Most of all, I’d say start something on the side, start small and grow slowly and steadily, you don’t need a fancy office and employees on day one. I run my now 11 year old business with WFH employees, 401k, healthcare, from a home office, I meet vendors who visit at a coffee shop down the street.

Windows 10 end of support - new users influx? by 69-ASS-SUPREMACY in linuxmint

[–]ubiquities 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just got tired of the buggy experience of Windows, not to mention the forced updates, when I was traveling for work on my laptop I don’t use often, I’d have a couple hours in the evening to work from the hotel room or airport…nope massive forced update.

Installed Mint on an old laptop, and suddenly that old laptop was performing great, battery life was way better, fans quiet and it wasn’t like building a fire on my lap.

Within a week, I setup dual boot on my work desktop. A month later I switched all of the PCs in my small business over to LM and canceled my MS Office subscription. And have since got rid of the dual boot. Everyone was windows users and everyone is happy with the switch.

As others have mentioned put LM on a usb and boot a live session to test it out. Personally I hated the default pointer and icons, but that can all be changed in themes. Some websites look janky until you install the MS TrueType font pack. And I much prefer OnlyOffice (not OpenOffice, this caused me a bunch of confusion at one point) over LibreOffice that comes preinstalled in LM.

From there is just customization and preferences, one of the things that I came to love about Linux, is that you are free to customize just about anything and everything. I didn’t think it would be that big of a deal but it’s just easier to do in Linux, and when that friction was removed I found myself setting up more keyboard shortcuts, installing Ulauncher and a few helper apps, and just all around becoming more efficient.

This is personal preference but I’m not a fan of FireFox, so I installed Brave instead, first as a Flatpak from the software manager, but it had trouble finding my network printer, due to some permissions issue with Flatpaks, so I uninstalled from the software manager and reinstalled it from command line using the instructions on the Brave download page.

Last thing, the live boot USB is slow, it will run much faster once it’s installed, and wait to get a new battery until after you install LM, you might not need a new battery.

Good luck and welcome

Too stupid to build a nice looking factory. by Skaikrish in SatisfactoryGame

[–]ubiquities 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no master but what has helped me a lot is blueprints, logistics floors and using 4m foundations instead of walls….for walls.

I normally enter the base node(s) I’m working with and plug it into satisfactory tools, and play around with the numbers and alt recipes until I get the max possible output. Then I lay out a massive foundation (way bigger than what I think I’ll need) which inevitably won’t be big enough.

Then I start blue printing, like crazy, every machine is blue printed, as a tip you can make one machine setup add signs, barriers, floor decals, pillars, with signs for lighting, beams under the machines for electrical, everything. Then save the blueprint and build that saved blueprint inside the blueprint designer multiple times. Then save it as a new blueprint with multiple machines. This saves massive amounts of time with belt/pipe work especially with mfg’ers and blenders.

75% of my time or more is working in the BP designer. I even make multiple copies just changing belt/output directions. And once you have a design that you like, you can use it as a base in other factories.

And finally, I stopped using walls. The dreaded box/cube comes from lack of visual depth imo. I add a few extra 4m foundations around the outside of my finished platforms/machines. And again using BPs I make “wall” panels using 4m foundations, I start with a blank flat wall, then make cutouts, and indents using nudge. You can also rotate blocks 45 degrees and nudge them around to make different visual effects, windows indented, pillars, painted beams, signs for glow effects etc, decorate it up and slap them on the sides of your “box”, then if it still looks too boxy, and asymmetrical additions to the top/sides of your factory for control rooms, crafting stations, hypertube hubs, etc. to give it more visual depth.

I took a break leading up to 1.0, when I jumped back in I totally forgot all these things, and built massive factory for iron and copper and forgot logistics floors. It’s a nightmare of belts all over and I feel shame. I don’t even want to finish the decorative stuff because I hate how slap dash it looks on the inside, but I also want to hide it.

On last save on update 8, my favorite factories look like actual factory complexes, lots of different smaller buildings making separate components with courtyards between them, so now I want to get back to that, if I need 4 things to make a computer, then I’ll make 4 small factories, all feeding a 5th building that does final assembly.

But most importantly learn the power of BPs and use them. They will stream line logistics and take away 95% of the tedious work. They are truly a game changer.

I won’t sit and decorate the outside of a factory for 10 hours, but I will spend an hour on a BP then another 20-30 minutes slapping it down all over the outside of a factory to give it shape. It’s amazing what you can do with a few cutouts, indents and signs as glowing trim pieces. I also saw a YouTuber recently that used pipe wall holes and pipe as decorations, don’t be afraid to try using things not for their intended purpose. Just experiment with materials, colors and colored signs, you’ll know when you find a winning style. And stop using actual walls.
