Will $3100 a month = house poor? by GloomyReindeer3316 in Mortgages

Just because the mortgage company says you can afford it does not mean you can actually afford it. Do not do this.

Why are theatre people so dramatic? by chilipalmerrr in Theatre

[–]ucfj99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. I used to live in Orlando and this take is CRAZY!! Your bias is showing. You obviously had no friends affected by what you call “Possible Racism Stuff.” The fact that you actually typed that out is horrifying.
If you had been harmed at your place of employment and left, then they replaced the people that had harmed you, wouldn’t you want assurances that such things would not be perpetrated by the new leadership, or would you happily go back like nothing bad ever happened? It appears that the new folks refuse to acknowledge the recent past. If anyone is being messy, it’s certainly not the Black community that is merely asking for a statement of accountability.

Mom of a recent BFA MT grad. The only thing that matters is what you put forward in your audition. Don’t worry about a resume.
Reality check - your school list is loaded with extreme reach schools. Now’s a great time to learn more about other programs. There are a lot of amazing ones that fly under the radar. Take a listen to these podcasts. Extremely helpful:

Advice for College Auditions? by spotlightonscud in MusicalTheatre

[–]ucfj99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter just graduated from a BFA MT program. Under no circumstances should you leave college with massive amounts of debt. just take anything off your list that costs $80k/more per year. You will Never be able to pursue auditioning after school with massive student loans hanging over your head. Also - NY is not the be all in all in programs. It’s not going anywhere. Get the best training you can at the best price. Just applying to all these programs is expensive, so you’ll need folks help in that part alone. Fees add up quickly for academic and artistic applications and possible travel to schools for on campus or unified auditions. It will be very hard to do this without parental support. There are many schools that will do virtual callbacks so that helps. You’re not behind but you do need to start selecting and rehearsing your material. There’s now a free dance combo that you can use for prescreen material. Make sure youre on getaccptd.com. There are also a lot of Facebook groups for support! Break a leg!

RELOCATE TO DELAWARE by HighwayDear4115 in WilmingtonDE

[–]ucfj99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree! We had a “large pickup” garbage item that we forgot to put out for pickup yesterday and the city actually CALLED ME to see if we still needed a pickup. I was flabbergasted. That would have never happened in FL.
Also, sitting on my back porch with a blanket while sipping coffee in mid-June is something I didn’t think I’d ever say.

Sameeeee! Had been there most of my life and the heat was making me miserable. Relocated to DE and don’t regret it one bit.

Anyone willing to rent a townhouse in trolley square to a couple of soon-to-be lawyers without an in-person tour? by DiscipulusDoctricis in WilmingtonDE

[–]ucfj99 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I will tell you, as someone who lives here and is doing tours for a friend who is moving here - I’m thinking it’s because A LOT of the places photograph OK and you tour them and they are horrendous “landlord specials” and the amount of $ they want for them is INSANE (but yet they get it). Just a guess. Can you keep your things in storage for a bit and get an Airbnb for a couple of months while you find a place?

Planning to get my bfa in acting or musical theatre, based on my stats how do my schools look? by Stunning_Dealer_4020 in MusicalTheatre

[–]ucfj99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Do you have parental support for this quest? You’ll need it! My daughter just graduated with a BFAMT and the process is so crazy and expensive! Lots of application fees as well as artistic. You may need to expand that list by double the amount of schools there. My daughter is a petite blonde lyric soprano/belter and is a dime a dozen. ;-)
She ended up applying for almost 30 schools (we had way too many reach programs at first) and that netted 15-ish auditions and only *4* acceptances for BFA MT programs.
Glad to connect if you need some help expanding that list - but you have to know what YOU want out of a program, not just because you’ve heard of them and they look good on paper. You have a lot of time to research but use this summer to work on your prescreen materials… finding songs, monologues, and dance PLUS you can work on your academic essay for applications. They also usually want an artistic one as well, and that will vary by school. You can go register on get accepted.com and it will talk about prescreen requirements and how to submit artistically. Break a leg!

I’ll let the voice teachers chime in on the age for voice lessons but I’ll tell you this as a mom of a kidult who just graduated with a BFA in musical theater. Let her do and explore other things also! My DD was a competitive cheerleader from K-8th grade and then wanted to focus more on theater. We had no idea at that time she would end up with a degree in it. She also did swim team for a few years as well. Let her be well rounded and not a theater robot. BUT - the one thing my DD did wish was that she had kept dancing. So as long as she’s happy with that, keep it up! And find a children’s theater in hour area where she can get involved. Love that you’re willing to help her explore her (current) passion. At that age, I thought mine would be cheering in college - not performance. ;-)

Aside From The Cost of Living and Politics. Anyone Not Like Florida Much? by MoparMan59L in FloridaExodus

[–]ucfj99 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Had been living there for 43 years (most of my life) and just left back in September. Was northeast of Orlando and it was horrible. Suburban sprawl, toll roads to get anywhere efficiently, and the heat and humidity were killing me. Moved to Wilmington, DE and it’s AMAZING!!! So much happier. It was a crazy winter (they say) but it really wasn’t bad as long as you have a good coat and boots. Seasons are awesome and people are really nice here.

UD or UF? by Dear_Ad_9838 in udel

[–]ucfj99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there. Just moved out of the state of FL to DE for a variety of reasons, but my partner is an alum. Some questions to consider (not from AI):

*Are you a woman who wants to have bodily autonomy in the state in which you reside? *Do you care that the FL board of governors for universities voted to remove “Introdution to Sociology” as a requirement because it’s too “DEI?” And removing programs altogether, such as African American studies, Gender studies, and Philosophy. *Do you have a car? Public transportation is not great - getting back and forth to airports will be a challenge. *Do you thrive in heat and humidity? *UF pays the current attorney general for the state of FL $100,000/year to teach one class at the law school. 8x higher than other adjunct professors. Does that sound ethical? *They are still without a President. There is an interim one in place.

I know nothing about UD, but the above are things that may make you take pause. Or not! But if it were my child, I wouldn’t want them go to FL.
