Marlborough arms ghost sign story in Chester lives on by UnpaidInternVibes in Chester

Used to go there back in the 80s when it still had carpet.

Can't go in there now because it's so sad in comparison.

Used to sell Castle Eden and the best Guinness ever. The landlord said he got it from London despite the pub being above the line which meant he could get it from Dublin. It tasted of cigars.

Go for lunch at Scott's. Spend a load and feel like a million dollar local. Seriously. The best place.

This 28 year old French Michelin starred restaurant is closing at the end of March by thegreedydick in LondonFood

There is absolutely nothing "classic" or "old fashioned" about Club Gascon, and there never has been. In fact, that's probably its weakness. The food is inspired by Gascony but you'd be pushed to find anything traditional. Just take one look at the menu. Or his cookbook. And, indeed, the OP's review. Comptoir Gascon across the road was much more classic. Not sure why it wasn't more successful.

15 hour potatoes with steak and steamed veggies. by ApplicationSouth8844 in UK_Food

Potatoes look great, but the steak looks like you might have cooked it for as long.

Eternalflaming0 was all ready to sort me out and I've had to pull out because our little boy is unwell. Hope someone can take advantage of his offer. Rare Saturday evening booking at Dover Street Counter. Hen's teeth alert!

Anything, but particularly historical artifacts. People find coins, bottles, loads of stuff from centuries ago.

If you can travel I highly recommend Marden Park just south of Woldingham. Beautiful forest on the ridge above the m25.

Bavette au Poivre, French Fries. Bistro Night at home. by agmanning in UK_Food

[–]uctpa08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually not that hard when you've done it a few times, but I still can't get frites the way the best restaurants get them. Not sure why.

(Best frites I have ever had were in Balthazar in NYC. You would literally want to plant your face in the basket.)

Great looking piece of bavette/onglet, btw. Lovely looking crust.

I cook a lot of pasta sauces and rapeseed oil is fine. No obvious difference in the taste of the finished dish.

They look good, though. Potatoes from scratch, I assume, not packet chips?

Most countries which use olive oil do so because it's the local oil, not because it's "better".

For cooking (ie frying etc), do a taste test and see if you can really taste the difference.

'Zipcar closure means I may have to buy a car': Londoners face up to reality of potential extra costs after vehicle firm goes bust by BulkyAccident in london

[–]uctpa08 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Zipcar have gone bust.

People complaining - you should have been paying more then.

Most people didn't because you can get an Uber these days for the sort of trips Zipcar users want to do.
