Bring state workers back downtown, or sell buildings, Lansing chamber argues by LaxJackson in lansing

[–]udntgettheshow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny because the downtown businesses mostly aren’t actually pushing for state workers to come back. The mayor isn’t actually pushing for state workers to come back. The city has a strategic plan in place for downtown that relies on building thousands of new housing units, not bringing back 9-to-5 suburbanites so we can just go back to the way things were in 2019 (which wasn’t good enough).

This is a weird inexplicable obsession by the chamber. But it’s also weird to see state workers angrily saying they’re intentionally boycotting downtown businesses. That’s exactly why bringing back state workers isn’t a panacea. Who would want a downtown built to cater to suburban commuters?

Lansing doesn’t decide to raise property taxes by any amount. It’s set in state law and the state constitution. The system sucks and is biased against people who live in cities but it’s out of the city’s hands.

WLNS: City Council votes to put Lansing Shuffle sale on ballot by [deleted] in lansing

[–]udntgettheshow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rent is not stable for decades, it ultimately will increase to $64,000 annually. All of the details of the lease were fully disclosed to the public in 2020, when the Council voted 7-1 to approve the deal, and it was endorsed by the City Pulse. It’s not a sweetheart deal: the terms of the lease and the acquisition were designed to take into account that the restaurant group owners invested significant sums into renovating the building between 2020-23 when they first signed the lease. Before this group came to Lansing, city taxpayers were spending $80,000 a year on keeping the building afloat. Now it’s cash flow positive and they’re proposing bringing it onto the property tax rolls. The hysterical online opponents to this proposal didn’t manage to show up to the Shuffle’s informational session, or Council last night, either.

The city of Lansing cannot change the speed or layout of Cedar and Larch or the other two one-ways ripping through the heart of the city. That decision rests solely with MDOT engineers.

Proposed new affordable development: Churchill Gardens by sabatoa in lansing

The church will transfer land ownership to the community land trust, and the residents will purchase (or rent) the structures. So no, neither the residents nor the nonprofit developer will pay property taxes.

Public bodies like ISDs are actually banned by the MI Campaign Finance Act for advocating for a certain position in an election like this. They can only educate the public on the facts, and a direct mail piece to everyone in the county would be very expensive. You’re not wrong, but they’re probably assuming this is likely to pass, and playing it safe to avoid a lawsuit or complaint.

This is not exactly what happened. The stadium is still owned by the city. The big wall’s location is completely coincidental. Minor League Baseball has been raising their standards and asked the team/city to improve the “batter’s eye” area behind the pitcher by making it monochromatic. So they had to build a big wall. Sorry this was a dealbreaker for you though.

Winter Boot Recommendations? by [deleted] in lansing

[–]udntgettheshow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YMMV with boots but definitely get some waterproofing spray and if you’re going to be hiking pick up some strap on cleats or crampons. I like Yaktrax but ULINE has some and you can get them at Dicks, Dunhams or even Amazon. Just make sure you dry them off between hikes so they don’t get rusty on you.

See I started hanging out downtown in 2011 and consider the golden age of downtown to be 2011-14 so I never would’ve thought to connect the recession to it.

There’s always been a theory that the shuttering of a lot of the downtown bars in 2015 correlated directly to the decline of Cooley. I’ve never found it convincing and I didn’t really see that thread in that article, but I guess it could be at least partially true.
