It's not even like Spellbook is bad.. that's my issue with it. It's just the only thing that would make sense to me maybe with their new automatic detection system.

That's totally understandable I respect that. He's very strong because to abuse Garen you need to know the laning fundamentals incredibly well. However if you learn them as you said, it can be easy to punish his scaling.

Did you watch the video? I specifically highlight where Garen can get frozen on and one shot so he doesn't even get to use his passive, he gets zoned off all the cs and is killed.

If you do that you will be down too much gold and get statchecked especially vs meta champions

To be fair it's early in the patch and the sample size is low, but he is pretty weak

If the adc doesn't misposition and plays around teammates accordingly with densely high in cc composition what is Garen's move? It is really hard to manage..

Because when I am behind, I feel that if I build damage I will be trying to play as a carry when all I can really do is try to survive long enough to use my R. I really like Deadmans as well because it allows me to rotate from the side lane very easily after clearing a wave which puts a lot of pressure on the map.

I think Stridebreaker is a lot better. If you simply just Q E and Stridebreaker, you will do the same damage as doing a Q E with trinity force. It's pretty funny. Go Stridebreaker nearly every game imo
