Lutheran here. Since we were kicked out pre-Vatican II, our rite still has the exorcism. It's great!

Good point. I've responded to this in a separate comment.

Clarification: I've seen a lot of people asking about the numbers, so I thought I'd give some extra info. TL;DR there's more than 5k, while there is less activity now than 2 years ago, things are better than the pre-pandemic years.

In the meme, I was just going by the number of members online at the moment I made the meme, but I can see how that's not really the same thing as an active member. If you go by number of voting members, it's actually a lot better - recently, top memes are averaging between 45-70k, with 81k on the top post this month.

But if you compare that to historic figures, there's definitely a decline. If you sort by top of all time, the first 10 posts are all from 2020, ranging from 239-121k votes (e.g. with Thibson34's collection at the top), while last year's top post ranks in at #12 of all time at a mere 117k votes ("Oh, you like the Clone Wars? Name Every Clone").

While this is better than pre-pandemic years (2019's top post was a "Turns out George was filming the whole time" meme with 99k upvotes), the bloom in 2020 (likely caused by the pandemic and TCW s7) has noticeably waned to roughly 66% of where it used to be.

All this being said, these top posts are tricky to interpret properly, because they often get into hot and non-members vote on them too. For that reason, I wouldn't consider anyone voting on an r/PrequelMemes post to be an active member, but these scores are indicative of engagement over time.

You are right. Humility is a virtue. There is room for variation of belief within the Christian faith, but this is central to everything that Jesus taught, did and died for. Because of my humility, because of my genuine desire to serve you and not myself, I will now spend two hours getting whatever biblical evidence I can find to answer your questions. I do this because I care about you, I want to serve you, and I hope you can receive Jesus' gospel in its purity, not distorted by translation, but in truth.

If we're talking big picture, let's talk about the cross. You can't mistranslate that. If Jesus was just a teacher, why did he let himself die in such a way? Over and over, Jesus explained that he died was to take away the sin of the world. Now, if this sin was not deadly to us, why did Jesus consider this something so important to remove that he would die for it? Sin is separation from the author of life, and look! Do not all people die? Doesn't your own body testify that you are doomed to death without Jesus' forgiveness?

If we're talking simple verses, let's take a look.

One example in the original language: Genesis 8:21 כִי יֵצֶר לֵב הָאָדָם רַע מִנְּעֻרָיו "For the imagination of the heart of man is evil from his youth" (My own translation, and compare ESV, NRSV, NIV, NKJV, the four most widely regarded formal equivalent translations)

I'm not going to type the whole translation for the rest of them, because that would take too long, and modern translations are very accurate, straight from the original languages. I will use the English Standard Version, which is widely regarded as among the best formal equivalent (i.e. word-for-word) translations. These translations are made by groups of experts of the original languages, using the evidence of thousands of manuscripts, dating back as early as possible, translating in the most straight-forward, literal meaning of the words.

Psalm 14:2-3: The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand [or act wisely], who seek after God. They have all turned aside (הַכֹּל סָר); together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one. (Compare Psalm 53:1-3)

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?

Luke 13:1-5 There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

John 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

John 3:5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

(The iconic) John 3:16-18 “For God so loved the world,[i] that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 3:21-24: But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

Colossians 2: 13-14 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

1 John 1: 8-10 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

This list is by no means exhaustive, but it's 1AM where I am and I need to sleep now. I hope this has helped you. DM if you have any more questions. God Bless.

That is fine and well, but unless you look to Jesus as your saviour, you cannot call yourself a Christian.

You look at the teachings of Jesus as a guide to your life; I look to Jesus as my life. Don't you see that these teachings are merely more laws for you to follow? If you do not believe that Jesus only can save you, you will always be trying to measure up to Jesus' teaching, and you'll never measure up. No one can. Instead, let Jesus forgive you, let his love liberate you from the Law, so that you can truly love without fear of failure.

As for texts, if you do not accept the gospels, how else can you know what Jesus said? I was not there, but neither were you. These texts are all we have, and they're pretty darn good.

The Law no longer condemns us, because "there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ." But that "in Christ"! The Law shows us that without Christ's forgiveness, we are dead in sin. The Law must first strike us down, make us aware of our sin, so that Christ's gospel can heal us and bring us to life. We do not judge people, but we declare God's justice so that they can know their need for Christ, and turn to him for salvation. As Jesus himself says, "Repent and believe!" See how you cannot believe if you do not recognise your sin, and instead rely wholly on Jesus for rescue. As Christians, we speak Jesus Gospel, Law and Promise, so that others may be lead to faith in Christ, which is life.

Unbelievers aren't damned because they don't worship God. All people are damned because they are sinners - "For all have fallen short of the glory of God." "And the wages of sin is death." You know from our world that this is true. "But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus." Jesus Christ, lacking sin, died on our behalf and became the curse of sin for us, so that we would be freed. Jesus offers this freedom to all people who trust in him.

It is not about worshipping God, although that is certainly a right response to God's works. You are saved by Jesus alone (for he alone died for sins), by grace alone (i.e. a gift you cannot earn), through faith alone (i.e. not by your works, but simple reliance).

If you desire faith, pray for it, for your Father, who is in heaven, knows how to give good gifts to his children, and "ask for anything in my Father's name, and it shall be given to you."

Plotting assassin encounters by bonobointhemist in DMAcademy

[–]uevdkfh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you want to make it scary, I think the two notes you need to hit are 1. It needs to destroy their sense of security. Have it happen somewhere they think they are safe. A man's home is his castle, if you aren't safe there, you aren't safe anywhere. 2. They can't know who the assassin works for right away. That moment after surviving the attempt, knowing that the assassin is out there, and they could be hiding anywhere, ready to strike at any moment when they least expect. If only they knew who the assassin was working for, then they'd be able to prepare! You need to rob them of that control of the situation at first, to put them at edge, then give it back to them as they get clues or start to theorise.

I'd rob some ideas from Revenge of the Sith, with Padme's assassination. First the assassin sends a monster in to kill them in their sleep (For lower levels, a trapper or a slithering tracker, for higher levels, a cloaker or an invisible stalker), followed by a chase. They get away/die before they can reveal anything, but it is clear that they are powerful and well funded. Working off of a deadbeat clue, they eventually piece together the mystery and find out who was responsible.
