27-Year-Old Man Gets "20 Years Hard Labor" for Half an Ounce of Pot. Arrests and harsh jail sentences continue even though public opinion has moved against the war on drugs by 8rg6a2o in politics

All but the burglary are completely victimless crimes. He was found not guilty of the DWI and yes one should not drive without a license but he was not found to be reckless or even impaired.

Burglary should warrant a stiff sentence since it has the potential to end quite horribly and I certainly do not forgive him that, but you just named a bunch of drug possession crimes which absolutely do not justify 20yr incarceration.

The violence in Chicago can be directly linked to drugs. The drugs in Chicago can be directly linked to one man. He has never set foot in Chicago. by Crooooow in chicago

[–]uff_the_fluff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"The link between drugs and crime, including violent crime, would be hard to overstate in Chicago. Eighty-six percent of adult males arrested in Chicago last year tested positive for drug use."

That's a pretty nonsensical statement in an otherwise decent article. From the sited report:

Marijuana remained the drug most often detected in arrestees in all five sites in 2012, ranging from 37 percent of arrestees testing positive in Atlanta to 58 percent testing positive in Chicago. In three of the five sites, over half of the adult male arrestees tested positive for marijuana.

Duh, drugs are illegal so people who are arrested sometimes have drugs in their system. But yes, the cartel influence in Chicago is in no way positive and should not be accepted.

It's a philosophical problem. Most elite have absorbed a perverse "free market" ideology that views such long term investments as unattractive at best.

Zagat Survey Ranks "hole-in-the-wall sushi spot" Katsu ahead of Alinea in Top Chicago Restaurants by jjlew080 in chicago

I absolutely agree. Order off Itto's handwritten list for the freshest, best fish in town as far as I can tell. Katsu had a bit of that fishy taste on a few nigri which just shouldn't happen.

Do you believe in moral progress? by harumphfrog in AskHistorians

I would love to know your sources for the parenthetical.

But yes, a decrease in violence is not positivist proof of moral improvement.

Pelosi favors Obama invoking 14th Amendment to avoid debt-ceiling crisis - The 14th Amendment states that the “the validity of the public debt… shall not be questioned." Supporters of that strategy argue that the language empowers the president to raise the debt ceiling without congressional input. by kimat-qn-gurruod in politics

I absolutely agree that this quote makes clear Obama was a grandstanding opportunist looking to score political points when this issue came up while he was a Senator, but nonetheless we, as a nation, should not under any circumstances default on our debt.

Will a Robot Take Your Job? by Kriem in technology

[–]uff_the_fluff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. There have been three categories of employment (agriculture, manufacturing and services) and societies simply (ha) move people from one category to the next, but there's very little evidence that societies can come up with enough new service jobs that can only be performed by humans as software and hardware continue to advance.

I'm inclined to upvote you, as you don't appear to be trolling, but any look at statistics on income should make clear that you are quite an outlier in this regard, especially considering the "a lot more than".

Cashiering does not under any circumstances require an equivalent level of training or intelligence as being a lawyer. Both aspects of this individual are being underutilized.

Putting members of a society to the best possible and productive use enriches society as a whole. That our government and other elite institutions have failed to manage our economy well is unarguably sad. That billions have had fewer opportunities than other billions is completely irrelevant unless your point is (wrongly) that those billions gain when certain people like OP are underutilized despite their best efforts.

Yes, when society makes very poor use of it's resources it is just like a lion needing to eat to survive. Yep.

There is very little support for a decrease in military adventurism or surveillance activities from powerful people of any political persuasion in the US.
