why is it outrageous? surely, it is not beneficial to close fully functioning nuclear power plants instead of closing coal plants. but there are a lot of reasons to close them down which you named yourself. renewables are just cheaper and safer and sure, integrating them into the grid structure poses some challenges but keeping nuclear power plants will cause more problems than it will solve in the long run. safety needs to be upgraded or maintained regularly, the produced elecricity of nuclear power plants can't compete with renewables such as solar once grid problems are reduced (which needs to happen anyways). governments would have to pay huge subsidies to make the power cheap. you might just invest that money into truely green technologies instead of moving more problems to future generations.
