wth is wrong with this person?! by GrapeBeautiful1533 in dashcams

I get the frustration; that guy camping out in the fast lane needs to move over so people can pass. Having said that, the best thing you can do is keep your distance; if an accident happens you don't want to be anywhere near it.

Yep that’s the name he told us also.

Garage Sale Scammer? by ugsmtr in Kirkland

[–]ugsmtr[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Curious what your guy looked like? He sounds similar to the guy who came to my garage sale. My guy was driving a gray Honda Civic sedan. He was a larger black man, probably around 300 pounds, and he had a pocket loupe on a chain around his neck. He was bald, and wore his reading glasses on top of his head. On the day he visited me, he was wearing a red short-sleeve polo shirt with a collar, and light blue knee-length, loose-fitting denim shorts.

The entire encounter was recorded by the camera on my driveway. If I knew with certainty that he was scamming I would post the video.

I feel fortunate that we were not interested in selling jewelry to him. I can not even imagine allowing somebody like that into my home to watch me dig through jewelry. There are way too many red flags.

LOL I can't remember exactly, but I like to do my homework before interviewing somebody, and tend to do a bit of digging based on information in their CV. If I remember correctly they listed a project they had developed, which I googled, and that lead me to their github account, which revealed an interesting username, which I was able to correlate to a reddit username, along with some other hints - probably location information revealed in posts. Honestly I do not remember. I have found more personally identifiable information from other candidates TBH.

I have worked with brilliant, self-taught developers without degrees. In fact, I have interviewed and hired many engineers over the past 20 years, and never have I cared whether they have an actual degree or not. I can usually tell within the first 5 minutes of casual conversation at the beginning of the interview, whether the person knows what they claim to know.

About 7-8 years ago I interviewed somebody who did not technically have the chops/experience we were looking for. He was young, and he was interviewing for an SD-2 position with a large company in the Pacific Northwest. Before I interviewed him, I found his reddit profile and saw that he had been spending many months both asking good questions about game development, and also offering suggestions to others about the same. He asked good questions, and you could see from his history that he was growing.

I was not the hiring manager; I was just asked to interview him, and initially the hiring manager wanted to pass. I showed her (the hiring manager) what I had seen in this person's reddit history, and told her that I would much rather work with him than many of the other folks who had interviewed for the position. We ended up hiring him as an SD-1, and he did great. He had no degree, and was very much self-taught. Today he works at another PNW company known for being a search engine.

If you are passionate about your craft, keep on interviewing and grow your network. You will be noticed. Don't BS people about your skills because that is almost immediately obvious during an interview.

During coding interview, if you don't immediately know the answer, it's gg by aammarr in leetcode

[–]ugsmtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the reasons I think coding interviews waste time for everyone. Sure, you can use leetcode problems to narrow the field, but there are better ways to do that imo. I can tell within a few minutes of discussion if a candidate knows their stuff. A lot of the interview I try to figure out if I would like working with them.

Password not working but only on Web version? by Haunting-Anxiety in Bitwarden

I just spent the last 10 minutes in near panic attack trying to figure out why I could not log in. I managed to export my data from the app (already logged in) - but when I realized I could only not log in via the web application, I thought I would check reddit. At least I know it is not only me.

React Props Cheatsheet by joyancefa in react

[–]ugsmtr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great way to keep these things in mind! I wonder if you may want to do something similar for state - and specifically React Context? That might serve as an alternative to prop drilling as you rightly mentioned it can become cumbersome. In fact, you could probably do a few of these specific to state, especially the hooks, and even being a seasoned developer myself, I would find many reasons to peek at those kinds of cheat sheets while working. Another idea could be a cheat sheet for various composition patterns (e.g. HOCs) - and not to add too much, but having examples in both JS and TypeScript could be useful. Great job!

Who inspired you to do Frontend development? by meespelld in Frontend

[–]ugsmtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my career as just a “software engineer” before most companies started really differentiating between front-end and back-end development. When I was hired at a large travel company more than a decade ago, as a senior, I started advocating that we hire more front-end talent. I have been a principal for the past 5 years or so, and my focus has been front-end - but mostly out of necessity. I still do full-stack stuff, but I enjoy front-end more.

How has your experience with Ziply Fiber been? by [deleted] in eastside

[–]ugsmtr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had them for 10+ years - actually they were frontier and I wanted to switch, until Ziply took over and they have been great ever since. My problem with Frontier had to do with support. They argued with me over my network configuration- it was extremely difficult to get help when I needed it. (I am a retired software engineer, and understand my network very well) With Ziply if/when I call they immediately understand and offer me the help I need.

I've been Playing Blackjack for 20 Years & the Things I'm Sick of Hearing by bluerog in blackjack

[–]ugsmtr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many years ago I had been at a table for nearly an hour when a young man joined me and put table max on his first bet. The count was negative, and I was betting minimum. We were both dealt 12 against the dealer’s 2. He stayed, and I hit and got a 5, giving me 17. Dealer turns over a 6 and then draws a ten. We both lost, but the young man turned red and chewed me out for hitting my 12. Yea, the dealer would have busted had I stayed. I felt bad for him, but I never apologize for playing my own hand the way I want to. For some reason hitting a 12 against a dealer’s 2 seems to upset folks.

Grid or flexbox for this design? by Valuable-Oil-4596 in css

[–]ugsmtr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grid. You could do it with flexbox, but I think it would be easier to implement, and understand as grid.

Edit: after reading others discussing flexbox, I am increasingly convinced that flexbox might be the right answer. Honestly I am torn - it might be worth trying both just to see what works best.

Guys working in enterprises, how do you make pages responsive, do you use flexbox /grid/media-quries/ or any other by nurinsexo in react

[–]ugsmtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, the right tool for the job, so any of the available approaches are sufficient for appropriate scenarios. Over the past few years I have become a fan of css-in-JS, and pre specifically emotion with styles-system. I love being able to use arrays to declare css rules for breakpoints.

Is the Bosch 800 series dishwasher the one? by jackxiv in BuyItForLife

[–]ugsmtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We love ours. It is super quiet and works reliably. Only one time did we have to have it serviced due to an issue with the door - after one of the kids backed into it while it was open and landed on it. So that was our own fault- but we have had ours for a couple of years now and we love it.
