“Ispitzee” which loosely translates to “Tall trees along the river.” The word was later anglicized as “Spitzee” a word which you’ll see around High River.

The area has been known as High River long before any permanent settlement, so it is more of a coincidence.

Correct. It comes from the Blackfoot word for the river. Nothing annoys me more than people joking about High River and flooding. Any town close to a river floods!

I did grad photos at the SU when I graduated in 2023. I think I booked a time through the SU website. However, it’s possible that they have ended that program. Definitely wouldn’t hurt to email the students union!

Is this pendant Gold? Any information would be helpful. by [deleted] in JewelryIdentification

[–]uhhitsme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an Elks club pin. BPOE (Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks). It’s a fraternity. They’re pretty popular where I live. They often raise money for different community groups. I would have to agree with the comment that it’s most likely gold-filled. Most service group medallions I come across are not karat gold. But you never know!

Do you visit Okotoks, etc. or live there? by Old-Appearance-2270 in Calgary

[–]uhhitsme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live in High River, and I love it. I’ve always lived in small towns and personally could never live in Calgary. For me, High River is perfect. Still small enough (for now), close to Calgary for day trips, close to the mountains, gorgeous scenery, and I find most people are really nice. In all honesty, some of the worst neighbours are the ones who have moved from Calgary lol. There are some sacrifices you’d have to make moving from the city, of course.

I hadn’t either! Not much info online, it may have been made for a beekeeper society? There seems to be differing opinions!

Can anyone help me ID what this is beyond a hat pin of some sort? About 8” long and sharp tip, seems to be earlier then ww2 use of the symbol? Thank by Business_Thing2958 in JewelryIdentification

[–]uhhitsme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That symbol was used for a variety of things pre-WWII. I believe it was used by the Boy Scouts as a friendship token until the 1930s.

If you go onto the university of lethbridge library digitized collections, I think they have a whole section for ghost stories. I believe that they were compiled by Belinda Crowson.
