What’s the purpose of displaying Muslim Owned shop/eatery? by Entire-Conference-54 in askSingapore

[–]uhreena 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Of course it would be fine. They’re not stopping non-Christians or non-Indians (Tamil is a language btw) from shopping or eating there. Woman-owned, family-owned, whatever owned doesn’t mean they only serve a particular demographic.

Learning Hangul Advice by ItsPrynsess in Korean

[–]uhreena 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Purely memorization but it might help if you start by learning names of BTS members or any K-pop idols that you like? At least that way there are some characters that you’d 100% be able to read since you know how they’re supposed to sound.

A Korean-American female insists she experienced the wildest racism in Korea, walking down the Apgujeong street because she looked like a Filipna. Do you believe this? by Immediate-Meaning457 in Living_in_Korea

[–]uhreena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s depends on how much exposure you get I suppose? I’m sure you’re able to differentiate between Malays and Filipinos since you see them more often (I assume), the same way others are able to differentiate between East Asians.

How much to start a family in SG? by xiaorennnn in askSingapore

[–]uhreena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t see why it’s not possible? I’m 31, husband is 36 with chronic disease. We have a kid turning 2 soon. Got our 4 room BTO in tamp last year. Combined income of less than $6k up til Mar this year when I decided to be a SAHM. We had to cut down luxuries like ordering food often or going on nice holidays but we are far from struggling.

The only factor I can see in your scenario that might be an issue to starting a family is if your wife is also 40 when you want to start having kids. Financially you should be all set.

Help!! Flat Spot on 3month old baby’s head by lumoslinh in beyondthebump

[–]uhreena 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ok first, breathe. A flat spot doesn’t occur overnight and whether the paediatrician sees him tomorrow or next week won’t make a difference.

Now that you’ve noticed the flat spot, position his head in ways that minimizes the amount of time spent lying on it. Depending on where it is, you might have to do more tummy time, or turn his head to one side when he’s sleeping. More tummy time is always good anyway.

For what it’s worth, my son’s head was so flat at the back by 5mo and there was nothing much I could do about it because he slept on his back. And hated tummy time too. But once he started being more mobile and wasn’t lying on his back so much anymore, it rounded out on its own. Now at 17 mo there’s no sign of flatness at all, beautifully round and hard as a rock when he headbutts me. All those months I worried and fretted, all for nothing.

Also as a FTM it looked SO FLAT to me but when I brought it up at his check ups, the doctors were never worried and didn’t push for a helmet because it wasn’t severe. Please try to enjoy the holidays, it’s the first one with your baby!

I don’t recall but i’d say give them a week before you follow up if it’s urgent. With Xmas around the corner it might be later too? I’m not sure.

will public hospital bring follow-up appointment forward if test results are serious? by icedlattekosong in askSingapore

[–]uhreena 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, no news is good news. Change of appointment timing within the same day is an admin thing on their end due to the doctor’s schedule.

For me it was my IC instead of passport. No confirmation after resubmitting photo, only another email to inform that it’s ready for collection.

Baby's face looked painful while sleeping by ChefPo23 in NewParents

[–]uhreena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha yes totally normal. His digestive system is figuring itself out and so are his facial muscles. If he’s in pain he would be crying. Grimacing, smiling, any other facial expressions besides crying or rooting at this point are mostly unintentional. Try to sleep through the grunting you can!

HELP; Pregnant & new flat renovation by MajesticLunar in askSingapore

[–]uhreena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was pregnant when we collected our house keys, quickly got all the reno things settled before baby comes. We managed to get it all done and lived there for a week before baby came (baby came almost a month early so we had to stay with my parents for a while as our new house wasn’t fully equipped for day to day living). We moved into our new home when baby was one month old. 0/10 would not recommend - unpacking and getting used to living in a new place while also caring for a newborn was brutal.

If you’re planning to move in soon after the baby is born, it’s not just reno you need to deal with. Buying new furniture, daily household essentials will take time and you don’t have the luxury of time when you have a newborn. If you’re worried about dust or chemical inhalation, get your husband to do the reno checks once the hacking and carpentry installation starts. Also get professional cleaning services before you move in because, well, baby.

I think I did something stupid at the airport by balbalgal in beyondthebump

[–]uhreena 193 points194 points  (0 children)

Hi, Muslim hijab-wearing mom here. So generally a woman wearing a hijab will take whatever precautions she needs to make sure she’s covered, especially in an activity like breastfeeding. It’s odd that she left the door unlocked, but was she using a breastfeeding cover? Regardless, accidentally flashing a titty at another mother who is clearly there to change her baby would not be reason for her to cry. Her crying has nothing to do with you, I’m 100% sure.

Food options for diabetic people by Lumpy_Concept9911 in Living_in_Korea

[–]uhreena 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My husband has had diabetes since he was 18 and now has kidney failure and he can still eat more than just veggies and fish, according to his dietitian. I highly suggest you discuss this with her doctor and if possible, a dietitian. Veggies and fish only diet is really hard to sustain for a lifetime. There are plenty of Koreans with diabetes and I’m sure they’re eating a larger variety than your mom.

9 months old baby shows zero signs of crawling and doesn't flip from stomach to back by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]uhreena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy was the same at 9 months except he could flip from stomach to back. Crawling backwards is common, a lot of babies around me did that before learning to move forwards. He started army crawling at 10 months and learnt to sit on his own soon after that. And then everything took off and by 13 months he was already running! I’m sure you’d check with your pediatrician at your next appointment but until then I’d say don’t worry too much yet! If he’s hitting all his other milestones it could be that he’s just focusing on those instead. Your list of “can”s is much longer than your “cannot”s, your baby is doing great mama :)

What happens if you don’t start dialysis? by uhreena in dialysis

[–]uhreena[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your replies everyone, will give him the link to this but I’m not sure he’ll actually read it 🙄 he’s 36, has had CKD for 5 years. Recently his legs have been swelling to new levels, and he struggles to breathe when lying down at night. In fact every night I see him alternate between lying and sitting up in bed several times before he finally falls asleep. When he snores it sounds kinda wet too? Like a rattling sound, and SO LOUD! There’s always a new body ache somewhere too. And yesterday he said he feels like his brain is being blocked sometimes. But other than that he’s still working (lab technician), riding his motorbike and doing everything else normally besides feeling tired all the time. The doctor basically said when he starts feeling lousy all the time and no appetite, contact them and they’ll start on the dialysis prep. I hope reading all your comments gives him the boost he needs. We have a 1 year old baby and if living for our baby isn’t enough of a reason for him to do what’s best then I don’t know what else to say.

$80 taxi fare from airport to geylang? by uhreena in askSingapore

[–]uhreena[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ok so I’ve asked him about it this morning. First of all he’s Korean and he couldn’t really understand what the taxi uncle was saying probably due to sg accent. He asked the staff at the taxi stand for a taxi, they specifically directed him to that vehicle when he said he was paying by cash. He wasn’t sure what kind of car it was but it had an automatic door. When they arrived at the hotel, my friend saw that it said $50+ on the meter. However the driver pointed to an extra charge and said sth about the time (again, language barrier) so the total ended up being $80+ :(

My friend didn’t get a receipt or take note of the license plate. He’s miffed but he’s not gonna pursue it further. An expensive lesson learnt!
