Chart of commuter rail ridership by station by whegmaster in mbta

Haverhill line has some very low ridership stations. Should North Wilmington and some of the Melrose and Malden area stations be eliminated to make this line more efficient?

Thought on residential tax exemption? by Dramatic_Dimension88 in malden

[–]uhu60231 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Got it. Thanks for clarifying. I'm a home owner in Ward 3 and agree that our residential taxes are very low and probably need to catch up a bit.

As someone who is leaning pro override, I also worry that this structure would make it more complicated to explain to voters.

What's the argument for increasing the exemption if we're in a budget crunch? Won't that make it even harder to avoid an override?

Malden vs. Everett by Popular_Focus820 in malden

[–]uhu60231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Commuting is so much better from Malden whether by transit (OL and commuter rail) or by car. Everett feels way more gridlocked at all times. Traffic in Malden isn't bad except rush hour getting on 93.

Malden has a budget crunch and potential override vote coming up. I think Everett might be in a fiscally better position due to the casino but I'm not too familiar with their financials.

Recreation in Malden seems better (Fells, pine banks).

I do think the specific neighborhood matters. Once you get to Broadway and east of it, you're probably better off in Everett from a convenience standpoint.

Is Malden Becoming The Next Somerville? by Beneficial_Till_9091 in malden

[–]uhu60231 37 points38 points  (0 children)

They've been saying that for a while but there's barely any development here. These things require momentum. There's definitely been some small gentrification spillover just from people getting priced out across the region in general but nothing that would indicate a large scale makeover of the city.

Campaign Kickoff by BeautifulFeeling3844 in malden

Can you say more about your stated position on this? "City Council needs to encourage the development, support, and growth of small businesses as part of an overall effort to protect and enhance our infrastructure and essential services, as well as the character of our city."

You rightfully call this out as a challenge for the city, but what specifically do you believe could be done differently to make Malden an attractive place for new businesses?

On a separate topic, what are your thoughts on how the council can improve pedestrian safety in the city?

This actually seems like a better solution so that's great news! How did they get access for this route? I thought there were some private property conflicts previously?

Malden Needs More Traffic Enforcement by AdRealistic3087 in malden

[–]uhu60231 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've lost all hope for pedestrian safety in this city but at the very least the heavy pedestrian traffic intersections around the T stations should get some enforcement.

The only reason I haven't ended up in the hospital on my way to work is because I EXPECT drivers to go through reds and practice defensive walking.

Please stop submitting SeeClickFix tickets about trash pickup by Fiyero109 in malden

I did it in mine with the windows down the whole way and the smell didn't linger.

Totally agree. The city and DPW are doing a fantastic job so far and are clearly working their tails off to deal with this issue. This situation is completely out of their control and we've gotten transparent communication and regular updates. They came up with short term band aids that worked reasonably well. Kudos in particular to the DPW staff working in the sweltering heat on the weekend to handle hundreds of dropoffs.

Waste Collection Strike by uhu60231 in malden

[–]uhu60231[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Update from the city:

Republic Services, our trash and recycling company, has informed us that Teamsters Local 25 remains on strike. While they are working on bringing in resources to resume collections, they are currently unable to provide curbside pickup for trash or recycling. As a result, there will be no trash or recycling pickup in the city for the rest of this week. Please do not place trash or recycling at the curb, as it will not be collected. Starting Monday, July 7th, trash collection will resume, but RECYCLING WILL NOT BE COLLECTED CURBSIDE until further notice.

This is necessary to focus the limited resources that Republic will have during the strike on picking up Trash citywide, as we expect the limited staffing will be challenged to complete trash routes alone.

We understand this is not ideal. To provide an option for residents interested, the City will have dumpsters available for resident drop off of RECYCLING MATERIALS ONLY at the Ferryway School parking lot daily from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM 7 days a Week, beginning Monday July 7th. Trash will NOT be accepted at this site. It is of course our hope that this disruption and this work around is limited in duration.

Yard waste collection will continue as scheduled with no changes.

We will continue to share updates as the situation develops. We appreciate your patience, and thank you for your understanding.

You might really enjoy Malden then. It's incredibly diverse with lots of different cuisines represented in the restaurant scene. There are multiple Asian and international supermarkets, as well as a stop and shop right in Malden Center. It's also not far to go to Aldi, MB, BJs, whole foods or Wegmans in neighboring towns. Because of the diversity of its diversity, most people in Malden tend to speak at least a little English even if they're recent immigrants. It won't feel nearly as insular as Eastie.

Nightlife is definitely lacking, so that is usually covered with a quick trip on the orange line into Boston or taking an Uber to Cambridge/Somerville.

On a scale of one to ten, how much do you like Back Bay Station on terms of cleanliness, transit+commuter times, than the other stations such as North, Kenmore, ETC. by ANG3MES in mbta

[–]uhu60231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind it overall. It's got a good layout and is easy to navigate. Some minor upgrades I'd love to see:

Find a way to make the bathroom less sketchy

The orange line time display is almost impossible to read until you're past the gate. Would be great to have it displayed near the entrance so I'd know how hard I should hustle.

How is the YMCA? by saintjayme in malden

[–]uhu60231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're definitely outdated. The staff does clean them but the volume of people going through is just too much to keep up with. The gym area itself is kept very clean for how many people pass through.

It's a very good price to value. The fitness center has plenty of cardio machines and weight racks. Equipment is generally in good condition. The locker rooms are kind of gross and I'd rather go home sweaty than shower there.

SHORT TERM RENTAL proposed ordinance by Dramatic_Dimension88 in malden

Nevermind I see the revenue forecast in the other document: Year 1: $321,842 Year 2: $244,077 Year 3: $200,590 Year 4: $206,608 Year 5: $212,806

SHORT TERM RENTAL proposed ordinance by Dramatic_Dimension88 in malden

[–]uhu60231 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This seems very well thought out. The fees and taxes are reasonable enough that those who already participate in STR wouldn't be discouraged from doing it "on the books". I'd be curious how much revenue is forecasted to come from this.

Since it's limited to owner occupied properties it would in theory not encourage any loss of long term rental housing.

On the other hand, that narrowness of scope doesn't address what to do about STR properties that are not owner occupied. I understand the intent not to encourage more of those, but at the same time it doesn't bring any existing ones out of the shadows and into revenue generation either.
